Government, Yes! God and Parents, No!
· Tuesday, February 23, 2010
One of the major differences between the right and the left concerns the question of authority: To whom do we owe obedience and who is the ultimate moral authority?
For the right, the primary moral authority is God (or, for secular conservatives, Judeo-Christian values), followed by parents. Of course, government must also play a role, but it is ultimately accountable to God and it should do nothing to undermine parental authority.
For the left, the state and its government are the supreme authorities, while parental and divine authority are seen as impediments to state authority.
Let's begin with God.
From Karl Marx -- "man is God;" "religion is the opiate of the people" -- to today's left in America and elsewhere, God and God-based religion, specifically Judaism and Christianity (Islam, too, but in the West, Islam has played little role) have been the primary obstacles to leftist victory.
That is why the further left a government or an ideology, the more it has opposed religion. The first targets of Lenin and Stalin were churches, synagogues and clergy. At the modern Western university, the epicenter of leftist ideology, the same has held true. A clear, if unstated, goal of modern liberal arts education is that as few college graduates as possible hold values rooted in traditional Judaism or Christianity.
This also explains the left's passion about maintaining and furthering secularism -- under the banner of "separation of church and state." Anything -- any value, any idea, any person -- rooted in Judeo-Christian values must be confined to as narrow a place in society as possible.
That is largely why there is such intense leftist opposition to the pro-life position. Since most opposition to abortion (when the mother's life is not threatened) emanates from religious values, "pro-life" means that transcendent values are authoritative, not a woman's wishes.
It is the major reason for left-wing loathing of those who oppose embryonic stem cell research: That opposition usually emanates from religious sources and therefore places Judeo-Christian values higher than science's capabilities.
It explains leftist opposition to even mentioning God in public schools -- students must graduate as secular as possible.
It is not secularism that animates those positions; it is leftism.
One proof is that there are many secular people who are not on the left. Prominent examples include Wall Street Journal editorial and opinion page writers and the Washington Post's Charles Krauthammer.
Take, for example, Krauthammer's position on embryonic stem cell research. Though Krauthammer is secular, he opposed creating human embryos for the sake of stem cell research -- a position all the more noteworthy in light of his own paralysis as a result of a spinal cord injury incurred as a young man.
Another proof that it is leftism, not secularism, that animates the left's attacks on Judeo-Christian public expressions and influence on public policy is that when left-wing positions are enunciated by religious spokesmen, the left supports them. Clergy that are anti-war, "green" or for same-sex marriage, for example, are celebrated by the left.
Many left-wing Jews and Christians believe in God. But the God that most leftists believe in is the same in name, not in characteristics. The God left-wing believers affirm is largely a non-judging God, a loving friend in heaven (or increasingly likely, in nature). He is found in trees much more than in moral demands.
The second most powerful obstacle to the state and government assuming primary authority is parents.
It was no meaningless phrase when baby boomers on the left declared, "Never trust anyone over 30." Who was over 30? First and foremost, their parents.
As with religion, the further left the state or ideology, the more it seeks to undermine parental authority. In the Soviet Union, Komsomol, the Soviet Youth League substituted for parents. Mao, too, did what he could to destroy the family's authority. Although no way comparable to Stalin or Mao, the American and European left also seek to undermine parental authority.
The battle over parental notification in the case of abortion is primarily about parental authority.
The battle over sex education in schools is largely about that, too -- who gets to teach youth about sexuality and homosexuality? Parents or schools (i.e., the state)?
The battle over school vouchers is in large measure also a battle over governmental authority versus parental authority. Who gets to choose where one's child attends school -- the state or the parent? The battle over who gets to actually educate our children has already been lost to the state in the vast majority of cases. It is why the left is so uncomfortable with home schooling -- parents, not the state, get to teach children.
As the late James O. Freedman, former president of Dartmouth University, said in a commencement address in 2002, the purpose of a college education is "to question your father's values."
Just as the left has substituted the authority of the state for the authority of God, it has substituted the authority of the state for that of parents. And just as God has been reduced to a non-judging, non-disciplining pal, so, too, the left wants parents to become non-judging, non-disciplining pals of their children.
In a nutshell, the left wants to have ever-expanding authority over people's lives through ever-expanding governmental powers. It does so because it regards itself as more enlightened than others. Others are either enemies (the right) or unenlightened masses. It is elected by demonizing its enemies and doling out money and jobs to the masses.

Oh hi, guess you were asleep during the last "conservative" administration. You yourself support "ever-expanding authority" over peoples' lives on social issues, whereas liberals do not. Don't be a hypocrite.
And it's the LEFT that demonizes its enemies? Right, they're the ones who paint the other side as embracing "sin," not protecting the country, wanting to "murder" babies (despite the word "murder" being incompatible with abortion.)
Seriously. You should take a look at yourself before you criticize them FOR WHAT YOU DO YOURSELF.

Adam, you should get your facts straight before you insult a man who is correct in every way in the article he posted.
In the first place even the head of planned parenthood acknowledged that the fetus is a living person. So murder is applicable to abortion, as it is in euthanasia, and certinly partial birth abortion.
If a person kills a pregnant woman he will be charged with a double murder!
Mr. Prager is correct. America, the USA has become not a Nation under GOD but a Nation that has gone under to the dark side by denying the existance of the only pure truth, GOD!

REPEAL 1963 Supreme Court decision - requested by the atheist O'Hare - taking Prayer and Bible reading from the Public Schools. Think of it, in the United States, little children not able to read a Bible or pray to God. "Where's all this love of the Children?????"
Children were never to be in "charge of the house". They are to be under "a tutor and governor until the time appointed of the Father." Gal. 4:2
This doctrine of the devil that was a product of the '60's to question Authority i.e. Parents is Anti-Christ.
We'd better get back to "Faith of our Fathers", because "smart alecks" have no common sense (i.e. the Ten Commandments of Almighty God.) Mother used to say, "Children are to be seen and not heard" and you didn't question Mother. And I am glad I learned early, not to question Mother.

The solution is simple. Wives quit working and stay home with the children and home school them. Stop sending your children to western public schools and universities. When they have to start cutting back or shutting down they'll have a change of heart and curriculum.
we talk talk talk but we don't do. Boycott these institutions. otherwise, stop complaining about the way the things are.
Also, if a young adult can be influenced by a professor after having been at home all those years prior, then in my opinion the child wasn't raised with clear values or the child is a mental weakling.

Marcus,
You talk, talk, talk, but I doubt that you have much "practical experience" on the subjects which you try to address.
I hope you have achieved the positions to which you have espoused.
I am guessing from some your comments, you may be about 21 or perhaps, you are very "idealistic".
It would be nice for women to quit work, for there would probably, be many who would loved to quit, but can not, because of taxes and necessities.
Boycott the institution?????? State Universities on the back of taxpayers, is a "FORCED" situation. I would not suggest going to these places, if they teach "doctrines of devils" and would destroy a person's faith in God.
But the Christian religion does not "FORCE" people. God is the Creator, He offers life and that more abundantly, but it is a decision on the part of the one who is under conviction. It's not "FORCED".

Mr Prager, the Left is not merely "trying" to reduce parents to the status of undisciplining pals, but has in fact largely succeeded already.
When my first son was born 24 years ago, we received plenty of advice (nearly all of it unsolicited) from well-meaning folks. Much of it even then advised us to reason with our child. Don't scold or spank, simply explain to him when he does something wrong, and he will learn to do the right thing. Mind you, the people giving this advice had kids of their own for whom I wouldn't have given a nickel. So we didn't heed that advice, and our kids turned out quite well.
Looking back, probably the most important thing we did was consistently assert the identity of the parent as final authority over our kids. We did not try to be their buddies. We approached parenting from the view that our job was to teach them good values, not to make them happy every second of the day. Today, I see the kids of those who advised us to be "buddies" are now grown up and they are simply large children. They don't respect their parents. They seem to believe they are the center of the universe, and that they're entitled to everything in life, just for breathing.
I take it Adam in the first comment is not a parent yet. He certainly sounds like a youngster repeating uncritically the dogma he was taught. I found particularly interesting the slick Leftist tactic that it's the Right that tries to force its values down everyone's throats. Usually this argument is made in defense of gay marriage or abortion or some other Liberal sacrament. But it's dishonest because marriage has been around for 3000 years in its present form and it's only in the last decade or two that Liberals have tried to redefine it. So how can it be that we're shoving our values on people when it's an institution that's been around for 3000 years? How can the people who suddenly want to change this ancient institution act as though their redefinition is "normal" and anyone who defends the tradition as it has always existed is somehow "radical"? The very notion is absurd.
As for abortion, the Left is remarkably ignorant of their own history. The founders of Planned Parenthood lobbied for abortion not as a women's rights issue but as a means of wiping out blacks in America. Abortion was part of the larger issue of eugenics, which the Progressives (today called Liberals) supported quite strongly in the 20s and 30s. Liberals claim to be the champions of blacks, but they refuse to even talk about the fact that 70% of abortions in America are performed on black babies (blacks make up roughly 13% of the population). Somehow that's not racism? If the Left really cared about minorities, that would be a major scandal. Yet they keep quiet about that particular statistic. Odd, isn't it?
As a Libertarian for many years, I supported the pro-choice position. But then I learned exactly how ignorant the Left is regarding basics facts of abortion. The dishonesty is appalling. It changed my opinion. Why would anyone support a position that is built on piles of lies? Same with gay marriage. The Left only cares about gay marriage because it's an assault on traditional marriage, and therefore it's an assault on the family. Beyond that manipulation, the Left couldn't care less about gays, and they prove it whenever a Republican is outed as a homosexual. Suddenly he's labeled a "deviant" and all the talk is about how sleazy his "lifestyle" is, and the gay community curiously fails to protest any of these stereotypes. So when it's convenient, suddenly gay-bashing is perfectly okay. Talk about hypocrisy! The whole gay marriage lobby is a fraud.

Hey, Adam, why is it when you lefties encounter criticism of the "great and powerful BO" (I love those initials. Think about it :)), the first thing you do is start screaming that Bush was no better? No one is putting W up as a paragon of conservatism. And the argument that "Bush started it, Obama is just continuing what Bush began" is hogwash as well. It does not matter how far back it goes (1863 by my reckoning), the fact is, we, *the people* need to take back our country, and re-assert our authority over the government. Last time I read the Constitution, *they* work for *us*. Wasn't it Jefferson who said "a people should never fear their government, but a government should be in fear of its people"? I apologize if I've misattributed the quote, but it is true, regardless of who said it. Oh, and Adam, the more you and your leftist buddies troll this site, the more you prove *our* point.

Mr. Prager thank you, spot on as usual
Adam
The last administration awoke the people, this administration increased the Sense of Urgency to the highest level because of the irresponsible reckless spending and Marxist policies. The Debt the Mr Barry Soetoro Denies any responsibility spiked in the last administration in the year 2007, the same year the http://http://www.thestrengthofamerica.com/2010/02/10/we-want-our-money-back/progressive radicals.html took control, of the countries purse strings. Congress controls the spending, Adam. I recommend some spending and deficit graphs on the site referenced.
As for Americans we are fiercely independent, and by nature will not take to being controlled by arrogance, ignorance or elitist government officials, My parents knew best and I continually fight the school systems attempt to indoctrinate my children with global warming crap among all others.
Values, Morals and responsibility it is up to you, as of now you take way to much of my money
One of the Most Pervasive Myths in American Culture today is that we are entitled to a great life -that somehow somewhere, someone(certainly not us)is responsible for filling our lives with continual happiness, exciting career options, nurturing family time and blissful relationships simply because we exist.
The Real Truth There is only one person responsible for the quality of the life you live.
That person is you Adam, Not the State, Not the school district, not the Fed, You This is the essence of the Constitution, you have the right to take responsibility for your life, and you have the right to whine if you did not make it in life.
Equal rights does not equate to equal results, Lucifer's plan was to ensure every soul equal results. That is the opposite of Freedom, Freedom to choose, freedom of agency, freedom from making mistakes, learning becoming better and succeeding.
Marxist policies take away the freedom to fail crash and burn rise from the ashes to success.
As for me I choose freedom, I choose being a Husband, a Father a free American.
Great Article Mr. Prager
