Leftism Makes You Meaner

· Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Only a fool believes that all those with whom he differs are bad people. Moreover, just about all of us live the reality -- often within our own family -- of knowing good and loving people with whom we strongly differ on political, religious, social and economic issues.

That said, I have come to believe that the more committed one is to leftism, the more likely one is to become meaner.

Two examples in just the past week offer compelling evidence.

Prominent left-wing commentators used the way in which Rick Santorum and his wife handled the death of one of their children to attack -- make that mock -- the former Pennsylvania senator.

In a lifetime of observing and participating in political debate, I have seen a lot of meanness. But one just assumes that some things -- not many, just some -- are off limits to political pundits and activists.

Among these few things, one has to believe, is the death of a child.

But I was wrong.

In 1996, Karen Santorum gave birth to a premature baby boy who died two hours later. After spending the night in the hospital with their baby son between them, the grieving parents brought the lifeless infant home for a brief period because, Santorum explained, it was important to them for their other children to "know they had a brother." The Santorums didn't want Gabriel Michael Santorum to be an abstraction to his siblings.

First, Alan Colmes on Fox News: "Once (voters) get a load of some of the crazy things he's said and done, like taking his 2-hour-old baby who died right after childbirth home and played with it for a couple of hours so his other children would know that the child was real ..."

Colmes was then interrupted by Rich Lowry: "You are mocking him. They lost a child, Alan. That's very serious and it's not something you should be mocking on national TV."

Colmes' response: "I'm not mocking the losing of the child. But what I'm saying is I think it shows a certain unusual attitude toward taking a 2-hour-baby home who died to play with his other children."

In addition to engaging in a cheap and mean shot, Colmes simply made up the notion that the Santorums had brought the baby home for their other children "to play with."

The next day, Eugene Robinson, Pulitzer-Prize winning left-wing columnist for The Washington Post, said on MSNBC, Santorum is "not a little weird. He's really weird. Some of his positions he's taken are just so weird that I think some Republicans are going to be off-put. Not everybody is going to be down, for example, with the story of how he and his wife handled the stillborn child whose body they took home to kind of sleep with and introduce to the rest of the family. It's a very weird story."

Four times Robinson calls Santorum "weird," using the story about the death of the child as evidence. He was wrong on an important detail -- the child was not "stillborn." And, like Colmes, he made up a mocking detail -- that they took the child home "to kind of sleep with."

The meanness of these comments is self-evident, as Alan Colmes realized and later apologized to Santorum. Robinson, on the other hand, never apologized -- as RealClearPolitics, which has no political agenda, correctly reported -- even though repeatedly challenged to do so on MSNBC.

I raise these issues for only one reason: to provide further evidence of my belief that leftism makes more than a few of its adherents meaner people.

I have had many interactions with Alan Colmes, and while we always differ, I never found him to be mean-spirited. I still don't think he is mean-spirited, and though I am not the directly offended party, like Santorum, I accept his apology, because I believe he meant it.

So why did he say what he said?

Because leftism fills many of its adherents with contempt and hatred. It takes a person of great character and self-control to continually imbibe and mouth the mantras of the left -- that everyone on the right is sexist, intolerant, xenophobic, homophobic, islamophobic, racist and bigoted -- and not become a meaner human being. If I believed just about everyone with left-wing views was despicable, I would be meaner, too.

In a previous column, I wrote about Thomas Friedman making one of the classic anti-Semitic libels when he wrote that the reason the Senate and the House gave Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu standing ovations was because "that ovation was bought and paid for by the Israel lobby."

How does a Jew write an anti-Semitic libel? Because he's on the left.

That was the reason Rep. Andre Carson said that members of Congress who support the Tea Party want to see blacks "hanging on a tree." Because he's on the left.

Leftists' meanness toward those with whom they differ has no echo on the normative right. Those on the left need to do some soul-searching. Because as long as they continue to believe that people on the right are not merely wrong but vile, they will get increasingly mean. The problem for the left, however, is that the moment it stops painting the right as vile, it has to argue the issues.

I think mean is too nice a way to describe a group of people that kill unborn infants and hold a gun to my head to take my money and give it to others for their own political gain.

That makes them murderers and robbers in my book. They are pirates that operate within a legal network.

And BTW, either Alan Colmes and people like him are mean or stupid. I doubt that he's stupid.

Mr. Prager is too kind a person.

In the absence of truth, light, and love (rejected; not withdrawn) what can be expected but lies, evil, and hatred?

I think the problem is that the left sees as their goal a heaven on earth of social equality and hsrmony. People on the right do not see a utopia as the end of governmental policy; they generally see various economic outcomes and would prefer better overall results. But the big difference is personal salvation; the right recognizes that salvation is between each individual and God; the left envisions salvation as resulting from good works done for humanity. To the rightist, nothing that one does can impact another's salvation, so we do not see differences of opinion as evil, only misguided, whereas the leftist seea a differnce of opinion as an attempt to deny him salvation and therefore evil.

Sorry, those leftists are sick.

I stopped watching shows like O`Reilly and Hanity because they insist on having the likes of Colmes on their shows. I don`t need acid reflux and ulcers at my age. Colmes is a leftist puke. You can tell by looking at him that he does not carry a full load of brick. If he did, it wouldn`t matter due to the fact that his elevator doesn`t go all the way to the top.

Richard, Colmes elevator never gets out of the basement. O'Reilly and Hanity have elevators that never go all the way to the top. Every time Hanity calls Karl Rove the architect, I want to puke. Yes the architect of the Republicans losing the House and Senate.

I admire Mr. Prager, but this time I think he is too kind. It's bad enough to think of using the death of a child to take a cheap political shot at an opponent. When Colmes and Robinson acted on that idea, they were disgusting. When Robinson tried to defend the indefensible he graduated to despicable.

This highlights the low meanness and hypocrisy of statists. They have plenty of empathy for the nebulous mass "the people" -- their excuse for abusing power -- but have no sympathy at all for the person. Every decent human being knows a child's death is a soul-wrenching tragedy that is NOT a subject for comment let alone mockery by political hacks.

This episode underscores the principal opperating philosophy of the Left -- the end justifies the means. Robinson is without honor, a word with no meaning to statists. Despite his apology, I hope Colmes is deeply ashamed of his comments, but somehow I doubt Leftist stooges are capable of this.

Frist, IMHO, the liberal MSM pundits realize the probability is very high that Obama is one and done. This translates, among other things, to picking the republican candidate via the liberal MSM. Santorum is just to conservative for their fickle immaturity so the liberals attack him. They attack anywhere they can, and if it is below the belt so what, they have an agenda and that is what is important to them.

The liberal agenda BTW, is the same in their political world as in their personal world. It is singularly, and only, to defend their immaturity against and from the world. Therefore their attacks have been perfected over a lifetime of defending themselves that others not see their failures to mature.

Meaness is but one weapon in the liberal arsenal of defense, but that you noticed this Denis it is then good that you share it with the rest of us, thanks. I do not like Alan Colmes. He has always reminded me of a flat tire.

Cowardice is the biggest calling card trait of the liberal personality. They shall never truely get "in the Arena". "They shall always be the critic who points out how the great man has stumbled". Their place shall always be with "those cold and timid souls who know niether victory nor defeat". Quotation marks wordage courtesy of Teddy Roosevelt. Thank you.

What these so called commentators did in even commenting at all about the death of Santorum's child was nothing short of reprehensible. No apology can assuage the disgust associated with those comments. Neither of those jerks should ever be allowed to speak on public airwaves again. To voice a political opinion is one thing, to stoop to the absolute lowest level of criticism is something else. Why don't we all discuss how each other have aged not so gracefully? Or why is your kid a blue collar worker? Or have you ever had a hygiene accident? There is no excuse or reason for those comments about the Santorum's handling of the death of their child, which I think was quite appropriate and reasonable. I probably would not have been so wise as them.

Thank you Dennis. I have thought this for some time. I have perfectly nice left leaning friends but if one mentions anything about politics or sends an email joke about Barry O, they really come unglued. I am delighted I have a sense of humor about these things. Without it, I would be in a padded cell by now.

I never could stand Alan Colmes, Karl Rove or the fat one who seems to have a broken jaw when he talks...and he never stops talking! I no longer watch much of Fox News either.

Mr. Prager, God bless you, you were much kinder to Colmes and Robinson than I would have been had I been writing a commentary on their comments. Everyone should read "The Road to Serfdom" by Dr. Feulner President of Heritage Foundation, an abridged edition of the book by the same title by Friedrich A. Hayek. In this book, the implication is clear that a true socialist, communist, facists,or nazis is probably incapable of being a Christian and the higher one might go in the heirarchy of these isms, the more likely they could never become a Christian. This concept, if you will, is one I have come to believe very strongly.

I agree with most of the reasonable comments that have been made here. The last statement is bothersome. I have a big problem watching Fox News also, yet that's the ONLY place where I can get a partial sense of the truth. O'Reilly is almost impossible to endure, but where else will I hear some actual objective facts? Many times, I DVR the MSM news and I compare their coverage of what they consider "newsworthy". Usually, it's a few minutes of news, followed by pop culture crap, followed by some cheerleading for our current dictator. It's truly sickening that the networks that used to employ true "journalists" have now sunk so low as to be comparable to Hitler's propagandists. Why does the American public have to put up with a 'fourth estate' that has truly become the 'fourth branch of government'? On a more sour note, the level that our dictator has sunk to is truly beyond the pale. He no longer even pretends to care one bit about the Constitution. In retrospect, it's quite obvious that he was openly and corruptly lying when he mouthed the words of his oath of office. The founders would be shooting by now, as both parties that are allowed to compete disregard our Constitution with absolute impunity.

I think Dennis, you're a thought leader on various values, but on leftism, you may have it backwards. My observation since the sixties (I'm 62) has been that people BECOME leftist due to old wounds, so anger predates politial expression of their Weltanaschauung, a word you know.

These old wounds bring anxiety at the sight of icons which remind them of the original trauma. As part of their anxiety, they become bolder and bolder with time and meaner because they can.

funny how these lefties ain't so mean or opinionated when they talk to me (bald-6'3"-260,competitive bodybuilder for 10 years)they are all bark and no bite-I'd love to see Colmes face to face-he'd crap himself-Santorum should knock his weasley ass out.I long for the days when honor meant something and if you ran your stupid mouth it was pistols at 10 paces,I'm sure there were far less stupid, mean comments when you actually had to take real reasponsibility for your actions

Our children are being raised with the "colmes-syndrome". They can do something wrong, even reprehensible and then just apologize, "Sorry, didn't mean it, just kidding." That Colmes was capable of choosing the phrase "home to play with", knowing full well that the family chose this way to deal with the grief of losing a baby, speaks volumes about Colmes' character, or lack of it.

That he was capable of choosing that subject and using that phrasing at all reveals who he is really is. The apology means nothing, other than he was called on his actions. However, since he does favor abortion, he is probably incapable of understanding the grief associated with losing a baby at birth (or any time.)

I do not know who commented that Liberalism is a disease of the mind.. Maybe Limbaugh..but it is the truth. For Friedman to be a Leftist AND a Jew strikes me as duplicitous.

Can he make anti-Semitic statements BECAUSE he is a Jew? Is that the same logic as black folks calling each other the N-word, but condemning everyone else that does? Friedman MUST have a serious breakdown of logic in his head if he thinks that being on the side of the PLO is the right thing to do,it would be because he is a Liberal fool that has forgotten his heritage as well as his history.

Mr. Prager is a good man, a nice man, thus often is waay too soft and reminds me of John McCain- always trying to make everybody happy and everybody get along. At least McCain got there legitimately, from a North Viet Nam prison camp. Unless Mr. Prager has suffered as a Jew I find his liberal attitudes condescending.
