The U.S. House of Presumptuous Meddlers

· Wednesday, November 11, 2009

As an American, I am embarrassed that the U.S. House of Representatives has 220 members who actually believe the government can successfully centrally plan the medical and insurance industries.

I'm embarrassed that my representatives think that government can subsidize the consumption of medical care without increasing the budget deficit or interfering with free choice.

It's a triumph of mindless wishful thinking over logic and experience.

The 1,990-page bill is breathtaking in its bone-headed audacity. The notion that a small group of politicians can know enough to design something so complex and so personal is astounding. That they were advised by "experts" means nothing since no one is expert enough to do that. There are too many tradeoffs faced by unique individuals with infinitely varying needs.

Government cannot do simple things efficiently. The bureaucrats struggle to count votes correctly. They give subsidized loans to "homeowners" who turn out to be 4-year-olds. Yet congressmen want government to manage our medicine and insurance.

Competition is a "discovery procedure," Nobel-prize-winning economist F. A. Hayek taught. Through the competitive market process, we producers and consumers constantly learn things that force us to adjust our behavior if we are to succeed. Central planners fail for two reasons:

First, knowledge about supply, demand, individual preferences and resource availability is scattered -- much of it never articulated -- throughout society. It is not concentrated in a database where a group of planners can access it.

Second, this "data" is dynamic: It changes without notice.

No matter how honorable the central planners' intentions, they will fail because they cannot know the needs and wishes of 300 million different people. And if they somehow did know their needs, they wouldn't know them tomorrow.

Proponents of so-called reform -- it's not really reform unless it makes things better -- have shamefully avoided criticism of their proposals. Often they just dismiss their opponents as greedy corporate apologists or paranoid right-wing loonies. That's easier than answering questions like these:

1) How can the government subsidize the purchase of medical services without driving up prices? Econ 101 teaches -- without controversy -- that when demand goes up, if other things remain equal, price goes up. The politicians want to have their cake and eat it, too.

2) How can the government promise lower medical costs without restricting choices? Medicare already does that. Once the planners' mandatory insurance pushes prices to new heights, they must put even tougher limits on what we may buy -- or their budget will be even deeper in the red than it already is. As economist Thomas Sowell points out, government cannot really reduce costs. All it can do is disguise and shift costs (through taxation) and refuse to pay for some services (rationing).

3) How does government "create choice" by imposing uniformity on insurers? Uniformity limits choice. Under House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's bill and the Senate versions, government would dictate to all insurers what their "minimum" coverage policy must include. Truly basic high-deductible, low-cost catastrophic policies tailored to individual needs would be forbidden.

4) How does it "create choice" by making insurance companies compete against a privileged government-sponsored program? The so-called government option, let's call it Fannie Med, would have implicit government backing and therefore little market discipline. The resulting environment of conformity and government power is not what I mean by choice and competition. Rep. Barney Frank is at least honest enough to say that the public option will bring us a government monopoly.

Advocates of government control want you to believe that the serious shortcomings of our medical and insurance system are failures of the free market. But that's impossible because our market is not free. Each state operates a cozy medical and insurance cartel that restricts competition through licensing and keeps prices higher than they would be in a genuine free market. But the planners won't talk about that. After all, if government is the problem in the first place, how can they justify a government takeover?

Many people are priced out of the medical and insurance markets for one reason: the politicians' refusal to give up power. Allowing them to seize another 16 percent of the economy won't solve our problems.

Freedom will.

I am equally embarrased that American citizens are not revolting against this "so called" health care bill that imposes sanctions, taxes, penalties, and even jail time on people who do not comply with the forced directives to buy insurance. Since when, in a free country, are we obligated to buy a product or a service that we do not want? Why are the citizens shut out of the debate? Are we children for whom the all mighty government must make decisions based on their vast knowledge of what is best for us? How was this decision bi-partisan when a lone republican traitor, Cao of Louisiana, voted yes in order to save his job because, as he claims, the citizens of his state wanted "free" health care. There is no such thing as a free anything - somebody has to pay for it. Everything has an opportunity cost - even digging through trash as a homeless person.

I have learned much in the last few months about this health care bill and the workings of Congress. What scares me about all of this is the possible fines of $250,000.00 I have heard they will impose on a person for not buying insurance and jail time up to 5 years.

Let's see...Bad economy...I lose my job...Still have to buy insurance, which according to Rush Limbaugh will cost upwards of $7000.00 plus a year if you make a certain amount, (which I forget at the moment). How will I pay for insurance? I won't be able to, like so many Americans out of work. So then I will be fined...but, wait, I don't have that outrageous amount either, even if I sold my house, so I will be put in jail. Then, I will be jobless, houseless, penniless, just less.

Is that why they have all those FEMA camps?

I'm embarrassed that this country is so apethetic that it allows a group of marxist radicals dictate what true freedom is(when they have created the problems to begin with).

For the first time in my life, I too am embarrassed by the astounding stupidity and arrogance of my government. The current administration gives new meaning to the term "mindless bureaucrats." I do not believe that the majority of Americans want this monstrous growth of government and they are rebelling against it. However, the foul smelling socialists, BO and Queen Nan & her court jesters, are ignoring the wishes of the American people and pushing through their odorous agenda. The rest of America are either oblivious to anything other than what is going on in Hollywood or in total denial of the evil that is being perpetrated upon them. We must hope for the best and plan for the worst. Hope and pray that this sickening assault on our freedom is utterly killed in the Senate and plan to stop paying taxes if it is not.

The American people are revolting in the form of 'townhall meeting' protests, marches on DC and contacting their representatives. I write my Congressmen about once per week and am now stepping up my efforts after Saturday's vote. What is the most 'embarrassing' is the fact that our leadership in Congress has completely ignored the US Constitution! They each made an oath to 'uphold' it and have done just the exact opposite. This is not leadership rather the height of arrogance and it is disgusting!

The reason that the government is so terrible at managing money, creating jobs and messing up our economy is simple. THEY WERE NEVER INTENDED TO BE DOING ALL THE THINGS THEY ARE DOING! Our government was put together for enumerated and limited purposes. They have slowly infiltraited into our daily lives and are emmbedded like a tick on a hound dog and not likely to let go anytime soon. Our job is to be diligent enough about our leadership selections and we have bungled it over the years. Term limits would be a great help as well as becoming more active in monitoring what they are up to. They stopped serving the people long ago and have, instead, evolved into serving themselves. Let's get them all out of there and replace them with leaders who actually have respect for our nation's founding and respect for principled restraint.

Here is how each of our "Elected" Representatives of the Congress voted on Government Control of our lives and voted Against the limits imposed on the federal government by the US Constitution. More than half of the politicians, obviously who never read the US Constitution, chose to snub their noses at the freest nation in history and our most sacred document, in essence choosing Socialism as a new path for our country.

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll887.xml

Send this information to all your friends and neighbors who would rather not continue down this path to Socialism. Let's vote each and every traitor who was sworn to "protect and defend" the constitution of the United States, out of office these next elections.

Remember, Socialist Organizations like ACORN, MOVEON.ORG, NEW YORKS TIMES, Main Stream Media, and various other Marxist ideologues have also been "threatening" congressmen and women who voted against with supporting their opponents in any election.

Let's show them that "We the People" are the ones really in charge of who goes and stays in congress and the senate!

Keep this in mind when sending this around: Everyone who voted for Socialism also voted to fine, or imprison if necessary, each and every one of our children who may chose not to opt into government run health care. They are Fascists at best!!!

Robert said: "I'm embarrassed that this country is so apethetic that it allows a group of marxist radicals dictate what true freedom is(when they have created the problems to begin with)."

I take issue with this. While I agree that many of us, including myself have been apathetic about our Govt and its leaders, I, and I am sure many others believed that the government was doing things in the best interest of the people. It wasn't until Bill Clinton, that I started "waking up".

I believe that to make a blanket statement that says that (the "entire country" is "so apathetic" that we "allowed" the marxist radiclas..." is unjustified. You can't possibly know how many of us call our congressmen and write and fax letters, pray daily, show up on their doorsteps and go all the way to Wash DC etc, and do all we can within our limited powers to try to influence our State leaders. How frustrating was it for me to write one of my Senators just the other day about the health care issue to have a canned, emailed response in return. I wonder if he even read my letter.

Please don't count me in your group of people who "let" these Marxists take over our country. I have done and am doing what I can, and while it is piciune, it is the best I can do. I know for a fact that many people are doing the same and more than me. Many other people are horrified and don't know what to do, so rather than criticize them and group them as blind sheep, I try to steer them to their senator's websites and show them how to contact them.

I will not stand idly by while someone puts a blanket statement on the entire Nation for the pride and selfishness of a select few. We are trying. We are not being listened to.

Holy cow! Somebody at PatriotPost give Ileana a column of her own. She's a clear-thinking, talented gal whose opinions should be heard more widely.

Songbird is right, above. Sure, America was asleep at the switch when it voted in the most Liberal, anti-American President in history. But they're waking up now. They saw the bailouts, the phony stimulus pork, the Cap & Tax, and Obamacare and they do not like what Obama is doing.

Songbird is right also in saying that millions of Americans ARE making their displeasure known. Millions attended the various Tea Party demonstrations. The fact that Boston and Worcester, MA -- cities in the very basket of Liberalism -- turned out 1500 demonstrators each is an outright scandal for the Left and a condemnation of Obama's policies. The fact that millions of regular Americans turned out for Town Hall meetings and the Democrats lied about who they were, calling them Nazis and extremists and suggesting they might be terrorists, did not sit well with Main Street America.

Americans noticed. And they are NOT happy.

Americans saw Obama's attempt to ram Socialized medicine down our throats back in July, and they raised their voices in opposition. Instead of learning that Obamacare was not wanted in America, Obama instead tried to bully his Democrat-controlled Congress into passing it before the August recess. When that embarrassing failure threatened to unman the insecure narcissist in the Oval Office, the Democrats pulled out all the stops and tried again and again until FINALLY they managed to lie, cheat and steal enough to squeak this train-wreck of a bill through the House by 2 votes.

Americans have made their opposition known LOUD AND CLEAR, over and over again on this foolish Obamacare scheme. Yet, rather than accept that America just does not want Socialized medicine, the Democrats have tried to sneak it in the back door, in the window, down the chimney and up through the heating vents. This is NOT democracy. This is pure, undisguised OLIGARCHY.

And as Songbird reminds us, Americans are waking up. If Democrats have the brains of a mushroom, they should be quaking in their $500 shoes.

Ileana IS clearly on target, as you are, Michael; but in answer to Ileana's 'since when' question about forced participation in government programs, we can go back to 1913 for income tax, and 1935 for social security 'robbery' of our personal wages, plus FICA larceny-by-government-fiat. The very BEST thing done for U.S. citizens by F.D.R. was to select Harry S Truman for vice-president for his final term-in-office. Fast forward to today, this 'Obamacare' legislation has been declared DOA in the Senate, the 'public option' misnamed albatross around its neck. We'll see if a filibuster can save US, literally and figuratively, from a socialist stranglehold on our citizens that will put the 'pedal to the metal' toward a fatal head-on collision with out Republic's free-enterprise system. If that comes to pass, I'm booking a one-way ticket on Qantas Airlines...anyone want a group discount?

As always, an insightful and accurate description of how our health care system will be dismantled by this bill. As a physician, I see nothing good from this takeover. As a veteran and a patriot, I fear more for our loss of freedom.

KLR

Doesn't anyone really get it? It isn't that congress is too stupid to realize that the health plan is unworkable and fraught with infringements upon our rights....that is their precise intention! They need this plan to be law, because it then gives government control over our very bodies....everything we do, eat, say, drive, buy, THINK will be somehow related to "health", from now on. They can control EVERYTHING. And you see, that's an important ability to have, because they are also intending to ruin America's economy (which this will help to do) completely, making us desperate and unable to resist becoming part of the "New World Order". What do you think Cap & Trade is all about? Another method of controlling EVERYTHING. Obama is going to Copenhagen in December to sign away our sovereignty. Everyone thinks we'll be able to turn this giant ship around in 2010 with the elections, but in the meantime, he is going to effectively stifle internet, talk radio, and all conservative media which INFORM THE PEOPLE about what is happening and WHOM to vote for/not to vote for! That's why they're not running scared away from all these horrific bills. They are going to be shielded from us, one way or another. Things are not going to work the way they always have, with the political pendulum swinging back and forth. They've got the power, and they are going to do everything they can, legally, illegally, or otherwise, to KEEP IT.

I agree with KLR, except, I believe that before the American people will let this stuff happen, they/we will march on Washington as a military, with the military and law officials on our side. If that occurs, it is going to get ugly in a hurry, but the American people are only going to be pushed so far before they start pushing back.

Very, VERY, insightful article, John! Much needed. And we are grateful to have your voice at FOX NEWS! My husband and I are members of several resistant groups, out of the 100's out there - each with their own agenda, own website, own membership. We need one leader to pull all resisting American Patriots together into a unified, actionable voice. Please use your platform to write about this need and help us find that one person. Thanks!

If the health care bill as passed by the House is such a good idea, why aren't members of Congress & gov't employees forced to live under its restrictions the same way we lowly citizens are?

2 cents worth.

1. Insurance companies are NOT in business for your benefit. They ARE in business to make a profit: PERIOD!

2. So to make the profit required by the owners or shareholders the insurance companies will deny your claim or find ways to limit their payouts.

3. Your employer might purchase insurance coverage for you, but he is paying a part of the premium price. Don't believe for 1 second that your employer has your best interest at heart as they too are looking for ways to cut costs. Don't believe it ... look at the number of people who have NO insurance.

WAKE UP America and realize that the insurance solution isn't working. There MUST be reform. Business isn't going to do it. So, that leaves the "Government, of the people, by the people and for the people."

Having a Government option will force the insurance companies to lower their prices and stop jerking their "patients" around just to make a buck.
