Tea Party Power to Solve the Debt Problem

· Saturday, February 20, 2010

The New York Times ran a front-page story this week called "Party Gridlock in Washington Feeds New Fear of a Debt Crisis." As usual, they got it wrong. Instead, the headline should have read, "After Scott Brown's Astonishing Senate Win in Massachusetts, New Political Gridlock in Washington Could Spell the End of the Liberal Crack-Up We Have Witnessed over the Past Year."

In fact, gridlock in Washington is good, since it will stop the assault of big government until the end of the year, when Congress could be overturned by independents, Tea Partiers, Republicans and probably some Democrats, as well. Just take a look at the high spirits at the CPAC convention, where Tea Partiers are reinvigorating conservatives and Republicans.

So let's take this momentum forward by using it to drain any remaining power from the extravagant spending-and-borrowing assault in Democratic Washington. And let's especially use this Tea Party power to stop Democratic plans for another round of broad-based tax increases.

Take, for example, Obama's new deficit commission. It's a bad idea. This commission is a fig leaf to cover up President Obama's out-of-control budget. It's a Trojan horse for tax hikes, especially a value-added tax that would engulf the middle class with up to a 15 percent tax rate on the sale of goods and services. Obama is getting ready to move his lips on the pledge not to raise middle-class taxes. Congressional Republicans must not let him do this.

Here's the real problem: The Obama budget would take federal spending as a fraction of the economy to 25 percent, roughly a $1 trillion additional spending increase in the out-years. Publicly held federal debt would climb about $18.5 trillion by 2020, more than double what Obama inherited, rising to almost 80 percent of the economy.

Rather than tax hikes, I say stop the spending. Outside of defense and entitlements, why not roll back the discretionary budget to 2008?

Or take a look at Harvard professor Martin Feldstein's idea of putting an end to all the new Obama refundable tax credits, which really are nothing more than new spending and government-transfer programs. Feldstein estimates that putting an end to the new "tax expenditures" could save $1 trillion by 2020.

And I would add in the need for a congressional law that sets strict spending-limit rules based on population and inflation.

And how about flat-tax reform -- ending all the unnecessary flotsam-and-jetsam tax credits and subsidies -- to broaden the tax base? Why not slash the top tax rate to 20 percent or less for a true flat tax?

Why not stop the multiple taxes on all forms of saving and investing, including capital gains, dividends and inheritances? And why not eliminate the business tax on profits in favor of a sales tax on net revenues that would deduct all investment expenses? That would leave us with a single-rate consumption-based income tax that would grow this economy by 7 percent to 8 percent in the years ahead, just as the economy should grow after a deep recession.

Going back to the debt-to-GDP ratio, I want to grow the denominator (the economy) and reduce the demand for the numerator (spending and borrowing). That means a combination of supply-side tax cuts and firm spending limits.

And we should add in some monetary reform for a stable King Dollar linked to gold or a commodity basket, along with an expansion of free trade, which itself is a tax cut.

In other words, I'm proposing a growth solution to the debt problem. Lower spending is pro-growth. So are lower tax rates. A program like this could get yearly budget deficits down to a manageable 2 percent to 3 percent in a couple of years. And getting the debt ratio back down to something like 50 percent also would be quite manageable.

Incidentally, limited spending and lower debt would take the pressure off the Federal Reserve to inflate the money supply, sink the dollar and raise the inflation rate to 4 percent or 5 percent or worse.

So here, once again, is the plan: gridlock in Washington to stop the big-government assault until Congress is overturned in November. After that, a return to growth, by way of reduced spending and lower tax rates.

There is a revolution going on in the heartland of this country, and it's aimed against Washington's profligacy and controls. There is still a way out. It's called free-market populism.

Washington, DC has been a nest of "Constitutional Violators". The Politicians "wheel and deal", they do not respect their "Oath of Office") hence now, with all of this "Compromise", we have total lawlessness.

We need Statesmen, Legislators who are afraid to violate their Oath of Office, and "stay confined to the boundaries of the Constitution."

I suggest that for "10 year moratorium" on any "new" laws. The legislature (to justify their lavish salaries) will meet for one purpose, go through the multitude of laws, judge to see if they are Constitutional, if they are not, REPEAL.

If Amendments have been added to the Constitution and need rectified, use the Constitutional prescription for amending the Constitution, get it fixed, ( like the 16th 17th Amendments).

There are Three situations of law that have to be fixed immediately.

1. REVERSE 1963 Supreme Court decision ( the duty of the Supreme Court, it was "their doing" so they have to REVERSE" this) atheist O'Hare demands prayer and Bible reading out of the Public Schools

2. REPEAL 1964 Civil Rights legislation We have a Bill of Rights.

3. REPEAL 1965 Federal Revenue Sharing. Taxes collected at point of collection, will be used at point of collection, unless otherwise designated.

NO MORE "recycling our wealth".

In regards to entitlements, I would submit that the only money the federal government needs to spend is for national defense. Let the individual states control their own entitlement programs, if entitlements are truly necessary (I'm not convinced they are). The founing fathers said, the federal government should only be concerned with looking outward, in other words, the federal government is the contact point with the other nations of the world, but should have very limited (almost no) power to act within our borders.

I agree with Ruth Ann and Brian. Things need to change radically with respect to our lawmakers. They ALL need to be thrown from office, possibly with the exception of the newest Senator from Massachusetts (He hasn't had enough time in office to screw things up). However, Senator Brown, beware, we will be watching you.

What is really needed in Congress is term limits to keep the fat cats from taking over and never letting go. The second thing needed is that all of the members of Congress and the Senate need to understand that they are in office to represent the people of their individual jurisdictions; not the country as a whole. That is the President's job.

The Tea Party movement was born because of the dislike for past and current administration efforts of too much spending and the federal gov't growing exponentially, not because of the single success or failure of either party. The actions being taken by the Obama cohorts is like the straw that broke the Camel's back. Enough is enough. Principles of the Tea Party can be espoused by either party/candidates. The past actions and future actions, however, will determine the support of today's educated voter. Complacency is over, ignoring is over, forgiving is over. The entitlement mentality must and will die! Members of both political parties, look out, Foggy Bottom will Clear! Nov. 2010 and 2012!

Want to solve the Debt of the USA? First, bring all the Soldiers Home, from Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, Korea and Europe.

Shut off all aids to the other countries we try to buy as friends. Stop money going to Israel.

Use the Soldiers to help collect all 10 plus millions of Illegals in the country, and deport them, in California that will shave the State 10 Billion Dollars yearly, 100 plus Billions for the USA, add all the savings 3 to 4 Trillion Dollars a year, all can be applied to the Debt., we pay less interest to the countries like China who hold our debt , we become more secure, we become a free country again. We become a strong country.
