History Books Get Gay Makeover

· Thursday, July 7, 2011

According to a shocking news report, California legislators have enacted legislation that gives the state the dubious distinction of being the first state in the nation to require public schools to include the contributions of gays and lesbians in their social studies curriculum.

We can be certain that one result of this ill-advised move will subject kids to a form of what CIA spooks call "blow back" -- an inevitable result of a specific action.

When I was a youngster I was teased and bullied for being an adopted child. In view of my personal experiences, should we add the contributions of adoptees to the legislation? How about adding the contributions of skinny kids, or kids with red hair, or extra-long legs or eyeglasses?

Where does it stop?

Singling out a segment of the population for specific inclusion in school studies programs on the basis of their sexual preferences elevates what -- rightly or wrongly -- many see as a form of sexual perversion, to a civil right.

The bill, SB 48, passed on a party-line vote, adds lesbian, gay, bisexual and so-called transgendered people as well as those with physical or mental disabilities to the list of groups that schools must include in the lessons. It also would prohibit material that reflects adversely on gays.

Unless I'm badly mistaken, what the legislature has done is to classify sexual preference as a form of disability, meaning that those who adopt the lifestyle are mentally or physically disabled though no fault of their own. Somehow I seriously doubt that gays or cross-dressers will appreciate being classified as disabled as a result of their sexual orientation or preferences.

This is just another example of the tendency of legislators sticking their noses into the personal lives of the citizenry.

It will prove instructive to see how the state's lawmakers go about the job of implementing this absurd legislation. Will they, for example, rule that textbooks must describe what the state classifies as acceptable behavior? Or exactly how?

Should the state require textbooks used in its schools to provide play-by-play descriptions of the behavior they sanction? Just where does this stop? Should not the "contributions" of convicted thieves be celebrated? Or those of serial killers? Or embezzlers?

The matter of the content of school textbooks has long been a controversial subject, but until now it has never reached the point where specific parts of the population are singled out for preferential treatment, especially when the segment of the population is distinguished solely by their sexual preferences.

School textbooks should never be used to promote anybody's political positions. They should instruct, not propagandize the publisher's personal politics.

According to news reports, San Francisco's Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano insists that SB 48 is crucial because gay students are being bullied. Republicans said the bill had good intentions but was ill-conceived, and raised concerns regarding indoctrination of children.

Assembly Speaker John Perez, the first openly gay speaker of the California Assembly, says, "This bill will require California schools to present a more accurate and nuanced view of American history in our social science curriculum by recognizing the accomplishments of groups that are not often recognized."

Sorry, Mr. Speaker, but the sexual preferences of groups "that are not often recognized" have no place in deciding the legitimacy of legislation.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has yet to announce if he will sign the bill or follow in the footsteps of former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who vetoed a similar bill on 2006.

One hopes the governor will have his veto pen handy. This bill is a monstrosity.

Another reason my family home schools.

Another reason to question the very existence of PUBLIC schools.

Another reason the personal responsibility and morals of this country have crossed the pinnacle and are on the slippery slide to despotism and Total Liberty in contrast to Civil Liberty.

Has California gone completely insane? Maybe its time for a moat around the area with alligators in it. Maybe an earthquake will to the job, but I am tired of Californians fleeing the aberant behavior capital, and cluelessly trying to make their new homes in neighboring states just as bad. Stay there, you fouled it up, you can keep the asylum. Schools have stoped educating and are now indoctrination centers for the Marxist Statist Progressives.

As a lifelong Californian I have a proposal to help us reduce our debt to China. Let them annex San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles to China as payment of our debt. California then becomes a Conservative State.

The tail truly wags the dog in this state. Public Service Unions, illegal immigrant organizations, gay and lesbians and out and out Marxists live in those cities and are ruining the rest of this beautiful state.

We're not all that stupid here. Despite appearances.

Education seems already lost. Did no one else see the appaling stats on knowledge of the 4th of July and from which country we gained our freedom? Text books are so full of the contributions of women, blacks, and now homosexuals, that the important issues are ignored. Hugh numbers of folk think we would not have fought with Japan in WWII if we had not started it by bombing Hiroshima! Those who do not know the history of the origins their freedom cannot be expected to defend them. Go back to education, not indoctrination.

Thank you, Mr. Reagan, for properly labeling this lifestyle as a "preference," not an "orientation," as so many on the left do. We've allowed the left to dictate the terms of the argument again, by their insistence on labeling this lifestyle an orientation. It is a choice, a preference, pure and simple. It is such an affront to nature, and to the natural order of life.

"I was just made that way," they say. Others could say, "I was made to be a thief." "I was made to be a liar." "I was born a sex pervert." True - you were born with a sin nature, as were all of us. However, most of us have learned how to control those desires to cheat, or to steal, or to lie, or to have sex with anything that moves. We've taught ourselves how to overcome those urges, and live a life that reflects basic human nature.

By their argument, all thieves should be honored in history books - after all, they were born that way. We should honor and single out their achievements and accomplishments. The same would ring true with pedophiles, and perverts, and liars (oh wait, I just described most of the members of the Democrat caucus of Congress, as well as Bill Clinton).

It will take much work, and much prayer, to overcome the evils foisted upon us by the liberal left. May God grant us courage to do the right thing.

I do not believe in the lifestyle - it's unnatural -and who one sleeps with should not be a basis for special priviledge or elevated status in society. It should be kept where it belongs - in the bedroom - and should not be elevated into ANY special situation such as the public schools! All this does is elevate profanity into special priviledge. Next they'll be asking for more tax money to pay for their special priviledge. ENOUGH!

Okay...I have a problem with SEXUAL ORIENTATION being considered as a GROUP of people. Especially a GROUP of people who intend to tell the rest of the country what is morally acceptable.

We are talking about SEX (the act), not the gender.

I totally understand the gender, race and all of the rest, but not the sex act itself telling the rest of the country what we can and cannot do!

This is SO WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS. The founding fathers would be appalled that we let this even come to a vote.

Ha! Really good article!!

I wrote to the Governor myself (since my representatives in the California legislature do not seem to care what I think) and pointed out that we really can't afford this legislation, as our schools are currently at the bottom of the national heap and our education budget is bankrupt.

And after four years struggling in a California public school--even in the gifted program, my kids are flourishing in a private Christian school!

As a mother of a Gay child, i think it riduculous the individuals would "think" that being gay is a lifestyle choice. Given the hatred and bigotry toward this group WHO WOULD CHOOSE TO BE GAY? My child attempted suicide 3 times because he was told by some WELL MEANING people that he was a perversion to society. I THANK GOD yes GOD his creator that he was unsuccessful in his attempts. And I can assure you that although there have been many many contributions to history by Gay Lesbian and Transgendered people they are not the ones pushing for these changes and inclusions in history books. It's more than likely some WELL MEANING person who wants credit for HELPING this victimized sector of society. Gays do not see themselves as victims. They simply want the same rights and freedoms as everyone else.

To JJ and others in a similar state of affairs, I beleive it possible to begin a movement of separation in California. For the good, decent Californians to separate out and away from the big heavy urban centers, and declare independence, rename yourseleves, start a new government. It is entirely possible that other states would quickly move to accept your new state status, I would. Easy to say, tough to do, but it might be worth the effort.

Army Officer

Do people like me get a mention in the textbooks too?

I am...

...wait for it...

Left-handed.

Left-handed people have been persecuted for centuries. In some places in the Middle Ages left-handedness constituted a prima facia case for being in league with the Devil - punishable by death. My grandmother (from whom I inherited this trait), had her left hand smacked with rulers by her teachers when she picked up a pencil in her left hand as a child. Within living memory public school teachers in the U.S. literally beat left-handedness out of their pupils.

Statistically, lefties like me have made FAR greater contributions to civilization than the 1-2% of the population that is homosexual, and we have been persecuted at least as much.

/sarcasm off

I'm not REALLY suggesting left-handed people should be studied and lauded in textbooks. I'm merely showing the ridiculousness of California in yet another area.

@rose -- Do you capitalize "gay" because that's your god? At least you recognize that God created your child, but you need to realize that God does not condone homosexual behavior, and your child does, in fact, have a choice as to whether or not to engage in a homosexual lifestyle. Sodomy is an action, not a state of being. Furthermore, adding homosexual heroes to the history curriculum has ZERO effect on the fact that your child has the same rights and freedoms as everyone else in this country. You are doing incredible damage to your child by encouraging dangerous and aberrant (i.e. homosexual) behavior.

I really hesitate to reply to rose as I, like she, would defend a child of mine to the death. However, having said that, I do take exception to her claim that gays, lesbians and transgendereds are not the ones pushing for changes. Has she not seen the raucous marches, the "code pink" violence, the boycots, and the vulgar participation of gays in Saint Patrick Day parades? Has she not noticed the gay lobbying groups pushing for special status? And I'm not real sure about the "many, many" contributions by transgendered people.

Rose, with all due respect; in the late 60s and through the 70s, I was for letting gays out of the closet. I thought it wrong to persecute without just cause, and simply being homo was not just cause. Then as a cab driver during the 80,90,00s, I found gays to be among the rudest people with their homoism. Touching, grabing, feeling, and of course their constant male on male sexual talk was about as much as I want to hear or see from homos ever again. Respect is a two way street, you don`t give no respect you should not expect to get respsct. My guess, your son has disrespected the wrong people. I still think it wrong to beat a homo for simply being a homo, but I know most of them ask for it by grabing the wrong penis, they owe me an apology. I would suggest you ask him if he understands how direspectful it is to touch, grab, or other a heterosexual male, it might save his teeth.

I do not understand homosexuals, those who call themselves gay, ruining a supposedly nice word in our language, and consider themselves better than normal people. We are made the way we are to perpetuate the human race, and I don't see where two of the same sex can do that. I believe, and I could be wrong, that some people are so fond of themselves that they cannot love anyone other than those similar to them.

I have known homosexuals that were good, hard working, individuals, and as far as I could tell, pleasant people to know. The best thing about them was the fact that they did not brag or flaunt their sexual preference, nor ask for special favors. If it is true that they are unable to change, then let them go their own way and keep their mouths shut. And the rest of us will do as we always have, keep our sexual preferences in our own bedrooms.

Since when do homosexually immoral people get or deserve special treatment? As contributors to society, they are no different than anyone else.

Will you give the same respect and recognition to Christians who contributed strongly to the Magna Carta, Federalist Papers, Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights? No! Christians - who are the very reason our nation has become the most powerful, technologically successful and affluent nation in the history of the entire earth - are treated like bad people.

I am offended that those who think they have some right to not be offended can tell me that I cant' be offended but just endorse their sinful and immoral behavior.

It is time for our nation to get back to studying the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It is time for Christians and the church to stand up, speak up and object to the efforts of homosexuals to silence and control our beliefs and tell us what the Bible does and does not teach.

Any kind of sex outside of marriage is wrong. Homosexuals have no right to be portrayed as model citizens when they openly engage in sexual immorality and Christian bashing.

God Bless America

Although I have no idea how #5 relates to the other"four"definintions.Yes! I Guess I Do! It really doesn't belong. The term gay is used to try to make homosexualality exceptable to the masses. And the masses now use this bastardized version of the word gay.Now if somebody uses the word gay!You think they're talking about homosexuals or lesbians. And not what the actual meaning of the word "gay" used to be. 1 to 2 percent of the population are lesbian or homosexual. If these folks are as proud of their "queerness" as they say they are.Why do so many of them complain when the words homosexual or lesbian are used instead of gay. Maybe they're not as proud as they would like you to believe they are. I've never once in my entire life wished to be homosexual. But i'll bet there's a lot of homosexuals that wish they were not just another one of natures oddities.Semper Paratus.

I guess I'm different from conservatives because I truly believe that we are a nation of ever expanding rights and understanding. This and all fights for equality and acceptance, including marriage equality, is a further expansion of rights. Period.

Conservatives are wasting their time and energy on this silly issue and the polls continue to bear that out.

You would all do your cause a favor if you drop the whole gay bigotry thing like the hot potato it is, and start to come up with some solutions to the problems government is designed to work on. These are tough times folks, and American liberals need a worthy opposition now more than ever. Human rights are never worth opposing.

Being "gay" is insalubrious. It is the #1 foolish thing to promote homosexuality, especially to children as yooung as kindergarten. Afterall, the majority of "gay" people are sex addicts (ie. bath houses, public parks and restrooms, pornography, group sex). Progressives do not accept religious norms against homosexual behavior, but, if they had any wisdom they would have figured out that 1/2 or more of healthcare insurance premiums cover drug and sexual addiction issues. Think about rising decadence and rising healthcare costs. Penecillin used to be all the antibiotic that was needed. Now there are 35 STDs plus HIV/AIDS. Gays have higher rates of domestic violence, drug addition, pedophilia (Harvey Milk was one), suicide, mental disorders, depression. Thus, society can not afford the even the healthcare costs of promoting such a variety of selfish pleasures. Study the NIH. I rest my case.

Peace.

It is not surprising to see that those who have been brainwashed by the Catholic church and know so little about what JESUS taught about marriage and the various sexually challenged people of all societies, are the most aggressive defenders of their distorted views on the subject in question.

JESUS said"judge not lest ye be judged".Only God has the power to make the FINAL JUDGEMENT and yet you all have appointed yourselves to be ABOVE GOD by BRANDING everyone who does not believe as you do with names that you determine to be derogatory and sinful.

How will you be judged when you stand before your Creator in the FINAL JUDGMENT? Read Matt.25 and SEE.

And please explain to me how did the gay, transgendered, etc. people throughout history contributed especially to culture, economy, etc? Was the fact that they were gay the determining factor in their contribution?

Are the minds of the kids going to be enriched by knowing that some of the noted figures from the past were any of these things? And please stop the bigotry mantra already! Why don't you call this what it really is: another effort to legitimize the homosexual lifestyle by showing that, see, important people in history were gay, so being gay is OK...or maybe even to be prefered.

Dear REASON1--There you go again--taking the scripture out of context. The Bible teaches that we are not to judge people, that is true--the final judgement as you say, is up to God. However, the Bible DOES teach right from wrong, and we are to judge what is right and wrong based on scripture. The Bible clearly teaches that homosexuality is an abomination to God, which indicates that it is a lifestyle choice. God never said "thou shalt not" in reference to anything but sin. Maybe you should read the Bible in its entirety so that you can quote it in the context it was intended in the future.
