The Deem-o-crats' Towering Deception
· Friday, March 19, 2010
If you cannot trust government's numbers, you cannot trust government's words. This is the lesson of the House Democrats' desperate promotion of a phony-baloney Congressional Budget Office analysis of their latest health care takeover package.
Democratic leaders leaked a solid-seeming price tag -- $940 billion over 10 years -- before the CBO released any official comment or report. Liberal blogs and mainstream newswires started parroting Democrats' claims that their plan "would cut the deficit by $130 billion over the next decade, and $1.2 trillion in the second decade of the plan's implementation" -- again, before the CBO had released an iota of information, and hours before the House Rules Committee posted the long-awaited reconciliation bill.
House Majority Whip James Clyburn pronounced himself "giddy" over the supposed CBO scoring. Math lover and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi proclaimed: "I love numbers. They're so precise."
But "precise" does not mean "accurate." And the most "precise" numbers can be utterly worthless. That is basically what CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf pointed out in his summary of the unofficial preliminary analysis of Demcare:
"Although CBO completed a preliminary review of legislative language prior to its release, the agency has not thoroughly examined the reconciliation proposal to verify its consistency with the previous draft. This estimate is therefore preliminary, pending a review of the language of the reconciliation proposal, as well as further review and refinement of the budgetary projections."
Translation: Garbage in, garbage out. Elmendorf's weary number crunchers know they are just more stage props in the Oba-Kabuki health care theater. Like the president's partisan donor-doctors dressed up in their White House-supplied lab coats, the CBO's statistical authorities are being exploited to lend credibility and solidity to the Democrats' legislative vaporware.
The CBO didn't release its non-report because it was finished. The agency released it because Democrats needed cover for their bogus transparency pledge to post the bill 72 hours before voting on it (which they still didn't fulfill).
The good news is that the number crunchers say they may have a real, final, useful analysis done by Sunday. The bad news is that House Democrats -- moving forward with their "deem-and-pass" trickery -- are scheduled to ram this monstrosity through by Sunday.
Pelosi touted fantasy savings from cutting Medicare waste, fraud and abuse totaling some $500 billion over the first 10 years of the Demcare plan. But House Democrats are relying on reaping massive dividends from Medicare reimbursement cuts that no one in Congress has had the courage to make. They also set aside the projected $200 billion so-called "doctor fix" to Medicare to make their math fit.
The first four years of Demcare clock in at $17 billion, which means the last six would cost a whopping $923 billion. As the CBO noted, it "does not generally provide cost estimates beyond the 10-year budget projection period" -- with second-decade projections subject to "an even greater degree of uncertainty" than its projections for the first 10 years.
Yet, over the past week, Democratic leaders blithely jiggered and re-jiggered their plan to get below a trillion-dollar spending threshold. Like the children's building-block game of Jenga, they stacked tax hikes and subsidies onto Medicare cuts and illusory savings until a rickety tower of budget deception was formed. Then they gingerly slid out the priciest pieces, rearranged them all and pushed back the spending kick-ins until the resulting edifice stood steady long enough to stay beneath 12 zeroes for a passing moment.
There's an old saying that "figures don't lie, but liars sure do figure." Every major Demcare statistic -- from the inflated number of uninsured to the politicized junk-science statistic on the number of Americans who purportedly die from lack of health insurance to the mythical savings that will come from squandering "$940 billion" -- is a single-payer-promoting figment of liberal imagination.
Mathematical corruption is ideological corruption. The health care battle -- and the battle over truth in government accounting -- is not just about health care. It's about the lies that will be used to ram through cap-and-trade, illegal alien amnesty and endless bailouts.
As Pelosi vowed last week, "Kick open that door, and there will be other legislation to follow. We'll take the country in a new direction." Yep -- straight to a red-ink-stained hell in a handbasket.

Hi Michelle I totally agree with everything except the very last "Kick open that door, and there will be other legislation to follow. We'll take the country in a new direction." Yep -- straight to a red-ink-stained hell in a handbasket. You should say " straight to a BLOOD-red-stained hell in a handbasket.

It appears that we are losing this BATTLE on "healthscare 2010" since nobody in Washington has a conscience and an American patriotic bone in their bodies anymore. Perhaps we can win the WAR against communism?

The Chicago mobster at large is getting probably exactly what he wants. An upcoming civil war, of sorts, because it appears to me that there are just too many "fly-over" dead heads against this rotten deal. May God protect us from this monster!

I actually tried to read through parts of this bill. Look what I found on page 1321 of the proposed legislation (seriously - look it up at http://democrats.senate.gov)...
“…there are authorized to be appropriated $125,000,000 for fiscal year 2010, and such sums as may be necessary for each of fiscal years 2011 through 2014”.
“And such sums as may be necessary”? How can you account for that? How can you budget for that? How can you PAY for that when you don’t even know what ‘that’ is going to be??? How can they talk of deficit reduction and then vote for something like this whose costs cannot possibly be estimated with such vague language?
So much for the numbers being "precise"...

Ms Malkin is right, every single thing about this Democratic health care debate has been lies.
First they lied about the number of uninsured, even playing games with the words so that "uninsured" meant "dying for lack of health care," when that's just untrue. They used to talk about 20 million, then 30 million, then 35 million, then 43 million, then 46 million. They just kept finding new sleight-of-hand numbers to pile onto the lie. When we stripped away all the phony numbers, it turned out there were only about 8-12 million people chronically uninsured, who wanted insurance. Even if you take the higher estimate, that's roughly 4% of the total population.
Democrats want to turn 1/6th of our economy over to the government, put bureaucrats in charge of our life or death medical decisions, crank spending up into the trillions on this one entitlement alone, deal a crippling blow to our economy, and subject Americans to increasingly confiscatory tax rates -- and all to provide medical insurance to 4% of the population! We could just give them free care for a tiny fraction of that cost.
Democrats have lied about the contents of their various bills, lied about the support their bills have enjoyed among regular Americans (who consistently oppose it, most quite strongly, for the last 8 months), lied about their figures, lied about the costs, and now they're flagrantly lying about how they're passing it.
Democrats are going to "deem" the Senate bill passed without voting on it. And President Obama has the gall to call this not deeming, but straight up or down voting on the bill itself. Yet, they're using "deeming" in order to avoid taking any blame for the thing when it passes, so how is that voting on it? The whole purpose of "deeming" is to dodge responsibility for the thing.
Get that? President Barack Obama went on national television and flat-out lied to the American people about the way his party was going to pass the bill. He would only do that if he believed he would get away with it, but the only way he could possibly believe he would pull off such a blatant falsehood was if in his opinion Americans are just too stupid to figure it out. Americans would just believe him because they're smart enough to discover his lie.
In the strongest possible terms, I URGE my fellow Americans to PROVE PRESIDENT OBAMA WRONG! Call your Congressmen and let them know you oppose Obamacare. Be polite, but make yourself understood, that if they do this utterly sleazy thing, AMERICA WILL HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.
Call your Congressmen! Here is a page that lists all the numbers for every one in both houses: http://callcongressnow.com/

We tried today as well, Michael. We went to the Capitol by the thousands. We were denied entry to the Congressmen's offices. We were allowed in on Tuesday but not today.

after going to the capitol three times, six of Masa's meetings, teaparties talking ad nauseium the battle still rages. As in the days of all pre revalutions we must continue to seek a Holy God [lest any should mistake the Holy one I mean it is the Holy one of Israel the Great God Jehovah] He alone sees the end from the beginning as David was being prepared to defeat the giant so we are being prepared. When the time is right we will be supplied with the five smooth stones OUR God is never late. The people who follow this present group in office are veiled from the truth. It does not mean there is no truth it means they are under the power of the deceiver. Our God says when evil abounds Grace ABOUNDS more.

Michelle,
I respect your opinions. You are right on most issues. However, please don't use "democratic leaders" when referring to members of the Democrat Party. There is nothing democratic about them.
Thanks
