Assimilation and the Founding Fathers
· Friday, July 2, 2010
In his immigration speech on Thursday, President Obama heralded America as a "nation of immigrants" defined not by blood or birth, but by "fidelity to the shared values that we all hold so dear." If only it were so. Left-wing academics and activists spurned assimilation as a common goal long ago. Their fidelity lies with bilingualism (a euphemism for native language maintenance over English-first instruction), identity politics, ethnic militancy and a borderless continent.
Obama blames "politics" for the intractable immigration debate. Whose politics? The amnesty mob has taken to ambushing congressional offices this week to scream at lawmakers to choose "reform" (giving a blanket path to citizenship to millions of illegal aliens) or "racism" (their description of any and every legislative measure to stiffen sanctions for and deter the acts of border-jumping, visa-overstaying and deportation-evading).
Is there no middle ground for all sides to agree that clearing naturalization application backlogs should take priority over expanding illegal alien benefits, or that tracking and deporting violent illegal alien criminals should take precedence over handing out driver's licenses to illegal aliens, or that streamlining the employee citizenship verification process for businesses (E-verify) and fixing outdated visa tracking databases should come before indiscriminately expanding temporary visa and guest worker programs?
Must every response to even the most modest of immigration enforcement measures be "RAAAAACIST"?
Further, as I've noted many times over the years when debating both Democrats and Republicans who fall back on empty phrases to justify putting the amnesty cart before the enforcement horse, we are not a "nation of immigrants." This is both a factual error and a warm-and-fuzzy non sequitur. Eighty-five percent of the residents currently in the United States were born here. Yes, we are almost all descendants of immigrants. But we are not a "nation of immigrants." (And the politically correct president certainly wouldn't argue that Native American Indians, Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians and descendants of black slaves "immigrated" here in any common sense of the word, would he?)
Even if we were a "nation of immigrants," it does not explain why we should be against sensible immigration control. The Founding Fathers were emphatically insistent on protecting the country against indiscriminate mass immigration. They insisted on assimilation as a pre-condition, not an afterthought. Historian John Fonte assembled their wisdom, and it bears repeating this Independence Day weekend:
George Washington, in a letter to John Adams, stated that immigrants should be absorbed into American life so that "by an intermixture with our people, they, or their descendants, get assimilated to our customs, measures, laws: in a word soon become one people."
In a 1790 speech to Congress on the naturalization of immigrants, James Madison stated that America should welcome the immigrant who could assimilate, but exclude the immigrant who could not readily "incorporate himself into our society."
Alexander Hamilton wrote in 1802: "The safety of a republic depends essentially on the energy of a common national sentiment; on a uniformity of principles and habits; on the exemption of the citizens from foreign bias and prejudice; and on that love of country which will almost invariably be found to be closely connected with birth, education and family."
Hamilton further warned that "The United States have already felt the evils of incorporating a large number of foreigners into their national mass; by promoting in different classes different predilections in favor of particular foreign nations, and antipathies against others, it has served very much to divide the community and to distract our councils. It has been often likely to compromise the interests of our own country in favor of another. The permanent effect of such a policy will be, that in times of great public danger there will be always a numerous body of men, of whom there may be just grounds of distrust; the suspicion alone will weaken the strength of the nation, but their force may be actually employed in assisting an invader."
The survival of the American republic, Hamilton maintained, depends upon "the preservation of a national spirit and a national character." "To admit foreigners indiscriminately to the rights of citizens the moment they put foot in our country would be nothing less than to admit the Grecian horse into the citadel of our liberty and sovereignty."
As pro-amnesty extremists moan that "we didn't cross the borders, the borders crossed us" and illegal alien marchers haul foreign flags above Old Glory, President Obama pretends that the "common national sentiment" our Founding Fathers embraced still binds us all together. Many of us still have faith in a strong, sovereign America -- the unhyphenated, the law-abiding, the gratitude-filled sons and daughters and grandchildren of legal immigrants for whom such distinctions still matter. But it's no thanks to the assimilation saboteurs who put "one world" over "one nation under God."

Liberals have turned America from the melting pot into a tossed salad in which illegals are the pampered and preferred ingredient.

Well said Ilenana and well said Michelle.
I appreciate your use of quotes from the "old white guys", who were very learned, expressive and spot on on so many topics.
I have just finished "The Real George Washington" after my fourth journey thru the Federalist Papers. I carry my copy of The Patriot Post's Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
They, like my Bible, are consulted almost daily.
We all need moral and social compasses, and like old cheese - the really good ones get better with time.

This Country was a melting pot in the 20's, 30's, and 40's, but now the majority of immigrants that are coming here illegally are not here to assimilate. They form their own home away from home. Some would call it a getto, and contribute very little to the Country, but take all that the "welfare" state has to offer. But thet do vote Democrat, so that is why Obama and his ilk are trying desperately to make them eligiblbe to vote!

The politics that Obama decries are his own. The only reason he and his party are so keen to grant amnesty is to gain millions of voters who are looking for the state to take care of them. Wait, there is another reason. The corporations who want cheap labor at the expense of American freedom and the rule of law provide support to his corrupt administration.

The Trojan Horse analogy is perfect. Just look at Europe's problems with Muslims who are determined not to assimilate but dominate. California has entire small towns where billboards are completely in Spanish. If the country they came from is so great why are they here? Wouldn't it be more honorable and courageous to fight for your country, take it back from the despots that made you run in the first place? Mexico's problems are not new. Take your country back first. Then raise a family.

I've often commented to friends, and anyone else who will listen, that "bi-lingualism in an individual is a beautiful thing, but lack of a common national tongue is suicide".
How often have we heard that "there is no official language" in the United States. Well, if this is true, then why does U.S. Code Title 8 Section 1423(a)(1) require that a person desiring to become a natualized U.S. Citizen have "an understanding of the English language, including an ability to read, write, and speak words in ordinary usage in the English language"?
I can remember when the first Spanish language federal tax forms were being introduced in California. A blurb in the paper from some politician noted that the government was providing tax forms in Spanish to help those who could not speak English be "more compliant with the law". Well, what about compliance with the above noted law?
When my wife, who is from Italy, went to her citizenship ceremony a few years ago, there were several people present who had translators, so that they could understand what the judge was saying!! Again, what about compliance with the above noted law? Why were these people even being granted citizenship if they were violating the law?
When I attended Jump School at Ft. Benning, GA back in 1981, there were numerous hispanic Army soldiers in the class (I was a Marine). Due to recruiting challenges, the Army had "modified" its acceptance standards (the Marine Corps was only accepting people with a high school diploma). During our training, one of these hispanic soldiers made a mistake, and the sergeants intructor where on him like flies on horse hockey. They were yelling at him, up one side and down the other, telling him to "drop and give me 20 [push-ups]". The soldier just stood there motionless. His buddy next to him finally piped up and said "Sir, he doesn't understand English."
This soldier had completed basic training, was half way through Jump School, and soon would have been in the operating forces, possibly going into combat. Can you imaging being this soldier's Platoon Leader and giving him a command...that he couldn't understand...and watching your fellow soldiers die because of it?
About all I can say is, "Asimila! Aprenda el Ingles."

So you to ask is "How can we, the people, have confidence in a man that clearly doesn't know what is going on in the country he governs?" I mean "Why sue Arizona and not Missouri?" And ask yourselves "how many other states already have laws like Arizona and Missouri; how about Oklahoma; its pretty tough on illegals. It's just more bravo sierra, posturing, and ALL of it is so embarrassing. This is just as bad as giving those would be instigators/clowns that were intimidating the public at official voting places a pass.

My mother’s parents immigrated to the U.S. around 1905. The first thing they did after getting jobs was go to night school to learn English and learn about the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Govt. make up, etc. so they could become citizens. My grandmother had her citizenship papers hanging on the kitchen wall. My grandmother could not read or write. It was the custom where she grew up in Europe that only boys went to school. Girls were expected to stay home and take care of the family. But, she did know what was going on. As long as I can remember my grandfather would read her the paper every night and they would discuss it. One night when they were visiting, I was doing my high school American History homework (do they still require American History to graduate high school) and there was a question on the Constitution. I was no sure of the answer and asked my father. Before my father could respond, my grandmother said, “I will tell you the answer”. I was the only student who had the answer correct. When it came to the Constitution she could give a Supreme a run for his money. And I am not talking about that moron Ginsburg, but Scalia (the sharpest Supreme).
My grandmother was one of 13 children; all but one was born in Europe. Her biggest fear in coming to the U.S. was that someone would be refused entry at Ellis Island because of health problems. Now say you have Aids and you go to the head of the line.

Great article Michelle!
But we all know the Socialist liberals have an ulterior motive.
That is, it is their largest potential voting block!
No one in their right mind would "bite the hand that feeds them;" Now would they?
Dems can only be elected on promises of more money, more handouts, more welfare, more "free" living. For without such promises of tax-payer monies, there would be few left standing in the aisles of congress.
Yes I agree, they are a pathetic and are un-American!

"Survey: Obama Ranked 15th Best President, Bush 39th" Fox News.com
You must be kidding! They must have sent surveys out to every ACORN employee to arrive at these numbers.
Let's do a true representive survey on who is the most Socialist. My bets are, Rosevelt #2 and Obama #1.
Or should that be the most anti-capitalist, most Communist?

BHO is an obamunist, the evolution of communism. It's going to be interesting to see how low his poll numbers can get before we finally get rid of him.
No "Reform" before the borders are enforced. PERIOD.

I do not believe the new illegal invaders have made America like a tossed salad. A more apt food example would be a bowl of wonderful icecream.... where 15% of the bowl had rat poop in it.
That 15% spoils the whole bowl of ice cream because the bacteria in it leaches out to all the ice cream.
Secure our borders first, last and always.
This will not happen until this congress and this president are gone and replaced with people who actually protect, defend and obey the U.S. Constitution.

Excellent article. I am an immigrant from Poland, and it drives me nuts to listen to the political correctness of people who do not have the interest of the country at heart, but interest of their ethnic group.
It is a national suicide to yield to demands of illegal aliens' advocates.
They bully us by using "racism" and "xenophobia" to discourage sensible discussion about enforcing our laws. We are the only country where part of the society doesn't want to have a country.
We are the only country where illegal aliens can protest on our streets using their flags and language. We are the only country where illegal aliens can sue citizens, win and be rewarded.
We are committing national suicide.
As a former democrat I say we have to fight tooth and nail for our country, to preserve her laws, sovereignty, borders, language, and culture. No to amnesty. No to anchor babies and their automatic American citizenship. No to illegal aliens' entitlements. No to democrats and their amnesty lobbyists.

Come to the NYC schools and witness how many illegals register their children for school and then ask for face to face letters for assistance. Let us not forget all the anchor babies born to illegals, yet another group we are paying for. Deportation looks like the way to go given this disaster our governmet has created

It's bad enough that there are currently 8 million jobs being occupied illegally by workers that are not authorized to work in our country to begin with, there are millions of Americans that are unemployed and on top of that the majority of jobs that are hiring in California are listed as "Bilingual Preferred" "Must be Bilingual" and my favorite of course "If You Are Not Bilingual Do Not Apply".
I can't even count how many business establishments that I go to that almost every person in the place is Hispanic. Whether it be the mall, major grocery store chains, restaurants, city government positions and of course all of Cal Trans. I'm sure many are illegal and the ones that are not are the children of illegals. They are only catering to each other and everyone else is getting left out. So please with Obama comforting us with his promises of assimilation, a fine and the whole amnesty jargon because all of California already has pretty much turned into Mexico and I'm sure by him giving citizenship to millions the worst is yet to come.
If its already at the point that everyone speaks Spanish and only Spanish speakers are getting the jobs and millions more are coming with the Amnesty why would making them learn English now make a difference, they already know the payoffs of playing the system and they are going to give that up.
