Will Republicans Save Us?

· Wednesday, August 18, 2010

Democrat control of the White House, House of Representatives and the Senate has produced an unprecedented level of political brazenness and contempt for the limitations placed on the federal government by the U.S. Constitution. As such, it has raised a level of constitutional interest and anger against Washington's interference in our lives that has been dormant for far too long.

Part of this heightened interest and anger is seen in the strength of the tea party movement around the nation. Another is the angry reception that many congressmen receive when they return to their districts and at town hall meetings. According to the most recent Gallup poll, only 20 percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, but that's up from a March 2010 low of 16 percent.

The smart money suggests that there will be a Republican takeover of the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate. The question is what can liberty-minded Americans expect from a Republican majority? Maybe a good starting point for an answer might be to examine how Republicans have handled their majority in the past.

Democrat President Lyndon Johnson's term of office saw massive increases in federal spending. When Johnson was elected into office in 1964, federal spending was $118 billion. When he left office in 1968, federal spending was $178 billion, a 66 percent increase. Worse than the massive increase in federal spending, his administration and Democratically controlled Congress saddled us with two programs that have helped fuel today's fiscal disaster -- Medicare and Medicaid.

The 1994 elections gave Republican control of both the House and Senate. They held a majority for a decade. The 2000 election of George W. Bush as president gave Republicans what the Democrats have now, total control of the legislative and executive branches of government. When Bush came to office, federal spending was $1.788 trillion. When he left office, federal spending was $2.982 trillion. That's a 60 percent increase in federal spending, closely matching the profligacy of Lyndon Johnson's presidency.

During the Republican control, the nation was saddled with massive federal interference in education through No Child Left Behind. Prescription drug handouts became a part of the Republican-controlled Congress' legacy. And it was during this interval that Congress accelerated its interference, assisted by the Federal Reserve Bank, in the housing market in the name of homeownership that produced much of the financial meltdown that the nation suffered in 2008.

During the last two years, Democrats have amassed unprecedented growth of federal government power in the forms of bailouts, corporate takeovers, favors to their political allies and nationalization of our health care system. My question is how likely is it for Republicans to behave differently if they gain control? Their past behavior doesn't make one confident that they will behave much differently, but I could be wrong.

If Republicans win the House of Representatives, there are measures they should take in their first month of office, and that is to undo most of what the Democratically controlled Congress has done. If they don't win a veto-proof Senate, they can't undo Obamacare but the House alone can refuse to fund any part of it. There are numerous blocking tactics that a Republican-controlled House can take against those hell-bent on trampling on our Constitution. The question is whether they will have guts and principle to do it. After all, many Americans, including those who are Republicans, have a stake in big government control, special privileges and handouts.

Ultimately, we Americans must act to ensure that our liberty does not depend on personalities in Washington. Our founders tried to do that with our Constitution. Thomas Jefferson offered us a solution when he said, "The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then."

BRD

Let us never forget that a republican president spent $11T he didn't have fighting 2 wars, 1 to depose a dictator his father helped install, let congress bankrupt Fannie and Freddie to take down the housing market and most of our wealth with it, as he formulated a $700B bailout with his Goldman Sachs Treasury chief to bail out his Wall Street buddies. And let us never forget that in 2004 he won reelection by inciting fear in the public that their loss would mean more 9/11s. Ballots won't stop the communists in power nor will bringing back the fascists. Only the constitution - and a resounding embrace of it by all - will save us. And we really do understand what that would take. Ready?

Dr. Williams,

I must echo the statements of BRD; the Republicans offer nothing new in the way of reversing our current dilemmas. In fact, the Republicans who claim to know what is best are the same Republicans who tried, but failed, to repair government after 1994. The Republicans started out with great gusto and fervor. But, they suddenly became enamored of the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky episode, White Water and Troopergate and lost what little focus they had.

After the 2000 election and the Republicans controlled everything, they failed to make any progress on so many levels. 9/11 and the "war Against Terrorism" were used for so many ills that the population became tired of the all the talk.

I feel that G.W. Bush's biggest problem is that so much was happening that no one person could have maintained any type of control. Instead, Bush allowed his "people" (for lack of a better word) make the decisions and he would back them up. Too often, decisions were made that would come back to haunt Bush and us, in general.

The Constitution needs one amendment immediately, if not sooner. Term Limitations need to be placed on those who would wish to rule our country. I don't have enough space here to state all of the specifics here.

Thank you once again for "telling it like it is." Keep up the good work and keep us (the people) thinking and talking.

Government can no longer be trusted. It must be limited by the constitution. Term limits - 12 years for Congress; taxing limits - max 25% on income, none on companies; spending limits - 18% of GDP; borrowing only in time of declared war. Term limit the bureaucrats too.

BRD & Duke,

Not excusing the Bush Liberal Republicans from anything - but lets move on and address the extremes the Obama Socialist Democrats are ramming through - by far worse the spending (debt can be paid down) Bush let Congress do.

Get Republicans elected AND keep pressure on them to act like Adults. Stop the Obama Socialist Democrat agenda THEN start repealing it or blocking the funding.

2012 we return America to We the People.....

Dr. Williams:

You are right-on in this case. I continue to admire your intellectual and writing abilities. I too am a concerned Republican. I have remained a Republican, but sometimes held my nose in voting for the lesser of two evils. I think the Republican party has one last chance to do the right thing. I think we need massive overhauls of our Congressional processes, begining with term limits, and ethics regulations that do not allow the fox to guard the hen house.

Keep up the good work.

True enough, the most recent incarnation of a government controlled by the Democrats has been worse than anything we've seen before. That said, I hold out little hope if the Republicans regain the House and/or the Senate this fall. The best outcome I see is a stalemate for a couple years, which would provide two more years for Obama's socialist agenda to become entrenched.

Turning back to the Republicans, I see a party that promises to support economic freedom but often doesn't deliver. Positions of power are used to provide economic favors in return for politial support. The status quo of having all together too much power concentrated at the Federal level is tolerated. Principles are traded off for supposed political gains. Positions that encroach on citizens' personal freedoms are often taken in attempts to pander to their supposed base.

But enough about the politicians. To a large extent we, the voters, must take responsibility for what we have created. Here is where my fears are magnified a hundredfold. Too many citizens of this country have lost any understanding of what it really means to live in a society founded on freedom and liberty. That's a change that's been creeping up on us over the past 100 years or so, and it will be a difficult task to rebuild the spirit of the founders in the hearts and minds of present day voters. Until that happens we will continue to rearrange the deck chairs following every election, but no real progress will be made.

A Citizen

You should see how the town meetings have evolved under this administration. This is an outrage that is not being reported. SEIU type thuggery by our members of CON-gress;

Great thread by all above. Other than voter ignorance, Dave touches the root cause of today's issues;

"Too many citizens of this country have lost any understanding of what it really means to live in a society founded on freedom and liberty."

The sword will become mightier than the pen for this to turn around.

We know what will happen, just look at what happened when Gingrich (CFR member) was speaker of the house. Can anyone tell me which agencies, departments, bureaus, laws, regulations, rules, etc were repealed or abolished? There is a difference between democrats and republicans. The democrats want to turn us into a communist country right now. The republicans will wait a few months. Also who did the republican leadership (still an oxymoron) support in the Utah and Kentucky senate primaries. And who are they supporting in the Arizona senate primary?

I think this time will be different then '94. There are many more tea party types that are winning congressional primaries.

Libertarians and constitutionalists must infiltrate and take over the GOP the way socialists did the Democrat party. That is our only hope for a truly effective GOP.

Excellent points Dr. Williams. Wasn't it Adam Smith who doubted that democracy could last much longer than it took the electorate to realize they could vote themselves other peoples' money?

But the alternatives are worse. So I agree with TJS in principle who wrote above what I'm going to quote here because it's a good wake up call:

"Government can no longer be trusted. It must be limited by the constitution. Term limits - 12 years for Congress; taxing limits - max 25% on income, none on companies; spending limits - 18% of GDP; borrowing only in time of declared war. Term limit the bureaucrats too." [-TJS]

Mr Williams, I wish all your columns were required reading in high school civics classes, and by all members of both houses of Congress! I look forward to each column. Thank you!
