Obama Calls Navy Corpsman a 'Corpse-man'

Friday, February 5, 2010

At the National Prayer Breakfast Thursday, the commander in chief not only got a sailor's name wrong, but couldn't figure out how to pronounce "corpsman." Yes, he said "corpse-man." Twice.

One such translator was an American of Haitian descent -- representative of the extraordinary work that our men and women in uniform do all around the world -- Navy Corpse-man Christian [sic] Brossard. And lying on a gurney aboard the USNS Comfort, a woman asked Christopher: "Where do you come from? What country? After my operation," she said, "I will pray for that country." And in Creole, Corpse-man Brossard responded, "Etazini." The United States of America.

Where does the media get the idea that this guy is a great speaker? If George W. Bush or Sarah Palin (or any other Republican) had said this, it would be repeated for the entire weekend and beyond. Obama, on the other hand, gets a pass.

Perhaps he should learn to speak English before he tries to speak Creole.

Update: We think Lori's on to something.

Update 2: Obama said the same thing in October 2009. You would think his advisers would have clued him in by now.

Imagine the uproar if Bush had said this or used a teleprompter while talking to 6th Graders.

Give him some credit - he's got that nose in the sky pose down pat.

What do you expect when you've got a guy who can't do anything but read a TelePrompter eloquently. Maybe they need to project the stuff to him phonetically.

It is an absolute DISGRACE to hear this idiot call Corpsman Brossard a "corpse man". And, he said it THREE times, not twice. This arrogant, nose-in- the-air IDIOT has no respect for our military. The "commander in chief"?? Is that not a terrifying concept?

How ironic that the Commander-in-Chief can't pronounce "corpsman". His Black Liberation Theology religeous mentor (Jeremiah Wright) just happened to be a Navy Hospital Corpsman at Bethesda. Maybe he never heard Wright talk about his background like he didn't hear his hate filled rhetoric over the twenty years he sat in the pews. I don't believe it for a minute...Sorry!!!

How can you say Obama "gets a pass" when your post here is contradictory evidence that he doesn't? You further proclaim it would be repeated for the entire weekend and beyond. Well, the "entire weekend and beyond" has not come to pass yet, so why are you making your point based upon speculation as if it has already occurred?

And, an individual mispronounces one word and he "should learn to speak English"?

Such a sad commentary on your part.

This article says Obama said "corpse-man" twice in his speech. He actually said it THREE times, and he also said "corpse-man" in a speech to the troops back in December (you can find the video online). I wonder how his press secretary Gibbs will dance around this latest embarrasment from our President.

Presidential historian Michael Beschloss told Imus that Obama is, "probably the smartest guy ever to become President." Nobody ever called Bush the smartest guy ever. We all make an occasional mistake. However, the media's reputation is at stake because they have inflated Obama's qualifications. There is now a webpage for Obamaisms. One that was missed was, "I want to be very clear that we are resolved to halt the rise of privacy in that region," when discussing Somalia. This might have been missed because the NYT corrected their transcript.) Perhaps his excuse is "I can't hear myself." (his excuse on 5 June 2008). Or maybe he needs a breathalyzer.

I'm pretty sure I've heard him refer to the Peace Corps as the Peace Corps, rather than the Peace Corpse... so surely he must know how to pronounce the word Corps correctly. He must either have a profound disdain for the military, or is the biggest dunce and teleprompter puppet we've seen in the White House so far. And one in dire need of remedial vocabulary instruction. I really don't care to hear what a great orator and intelligent leader this boob is anymore. Harvard Degree stocks just took a nose dive in the market of institutions of higher learning. Obama wouldn't amount to a fly speck in comparision to the common sense, intelligence and leadership of any one of the likes of Jefferson, Madison, Adams (John or Sam), Franklin, Geo. Washington and Hamilton. And yet, he and his capos are, each day, busily undoing the fine work of those great minds. God Save the Republic.

If The One's staffers had done a little more research, they might have found that "Creole" is a derivative of French. His pronunciation of "En-tan-zini" is actually "Etats Unis," spoken "Etas-Uniee."

I am also reminded of the media constantly hammering George W. Bush for saying "nuke-you-ler" for "nuke-lee-ar." "Corpse-man" is equally egregious, yet goes without comment from the fawning Fourth Estate.

The press continually made fun of George W Bush for mispronouncing words and he occasionally did.

The difference is that Obama really believes that he pronounced it right - "CORPES-MAN". He just doesn't have a clue . . . . . He should apologize to all servicemen and women, both past and present for his gross ignorance and make a commitment as "Commander And Chief" to at least take the time to learn the basic

terminology used by the military that serves so valiantly under him.

To all who complain about the lack of reporting of the mispronunciation: is it really news when someone gives a speech of over 1900 words and mispronounces one of them? I know...your response is that if Bush had done the same, it would have been reported. Why do you think that is? Don't you believe that Bush's repeated mispronunciations had something to do with the scrutiny he received? 'Corpsman' is a relatively uncommon word in our language whereas 'nuclear' is not. Don't you think that is a difference worth considering? How much of this criticism is a prejudice that exists among most readers here against President Obama? This country is the greatest in the world and I love it, but we all too often get caught up in these silly partisan arguments---and yes, the guilt lies with the left as well as the right.

This was not a gaffe or a mangling of the English language like Bush often did but an obvious lack of knowledge by Obama since it was repeated a couple of times. Notice how some people seem to feel duty-bound to try to explain away this guy's gaffes? Even to the extent of blaming the words for his mispronunciations of them. How ridiculous! We're to believe this guy is a super-intellect simply because someone tells us he is, but I, frankly, do not see it. But he's a Harvard graduate, you say? Well, so was George Bush, the man whom intellectuals love to disdain. Or is he to be assumed intellectually superior only because he espouses the leftist programs of our intellectually elite educators and media? He is obviously in way over his head and just a bit of thinking by voters prior to voting would have revealed this. And to answer the criticism that I no coubt think this way because of prejudice, borrowing Chris Matthews's thought, for the past year I wouldn't even have noticed he was black...except when he constantly reminded me of it. Yep, we got change alright. We can change also. Like change Presidents at the end of this guys term, change Speaker of the House in 2010 and get rid of the Senate Majority leader. Amazing! I don't think this man has a clue about the history of our military. O.K. I grew up during WWII, so I had the benefit of reading Guadacanal Diary, seeing the movie and John Wayne in Sands of Iwo Jima so I knew by the time I was 12 years old that a Corpsman was not a Corpseman. So this man was so detached he didn't even read or see "Flags of our Fathers" where the authors father was a Corpsman and one of the men raising the flag on Mt. Surabachi. He should publicly apologize to all those men who risked and many of whom gave their lives for their comrades througout the history of our U.S. Navy and Marines. What a disgrace to the office.

All that aside, that's not why he was quoted by Donald Trump as being the "worst president in history". If the topic on the forefront for the right-wing is the mispronunciation of a word, then that should be a HUGE credit to the things that matter when it comes to the job of being president. David, how is Obama "light years ahead of his predecessor?" Do you mean in education? We know nothing about his education, all his records are sealed, except what he says he did. Do you mean the number of Obama gaffes that were not reported by the socialist media? Do you mean in how he is running the country into the ground in terms of politics, economics, ethics, military?

Incidentally, most Americans mispronounce nuclear because of the double consonant "cl" followed by the diphthong "ea." "Cl" is hard to say for most people without inserting the vowel "u."

However, most real Americans know about silent consonants in the English language such as in corpsman.
