Redefining ‘Torture’
An imprisoned transgender sues.
The Southern Poverty Law Center will sue the Georgia Department of Corrections if it does not provide hormone treatment for “Ashley” Diamond. The transgender man (who thinks he’s a woman) entered prison in 2012 and could not take hormones. His body started to revert to nature, growing facial hair and deepening his voice. “I am only asking for respect,” said Diamond in a SPLC press release. “No one would deny a diabetic prisoner insulin. No one would sentence a person to a gender change. But because I am transgender, I am denied basic medical care and forced to change gender. Nobody should be sentenced to torture like this.” Torture?
