At first, it looked like the GOP’s proposed budget could have divided the party. Republican hawks liked the increase of defense spending, but fiscal conservatives were loath to support what they saw as excess to the plan. But on Wednesday, House members came together to support the $3.8 trillion spending plan in a 228 to 199 vote. The plan would make it easier to eliminate ObamaCare, reform Medicaid and Medicare and set a course to balance the budget in 10 years. Susan Ferrechio of the Washington Examiner wrote, “Some fiscal conservatives decided to back the measure with extra defense funding, authored by House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price, R-Ga., because the proposal includes a bigger priority for the far Right: A provision that would make it easier for the Senate to repeal the Affordable Care Act with 51 votes, instead of 60.” With the party united, Republicans can focus on the real challenge: meshing the Senate’s proposed budget with the House’s, and then fighting an executive president who will oppose fiscal responsibility to protect his “Affordable” Care Act.
