Senate Creates Tentative Veto-Proof Bill on Iran Treaty

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee says it has created a bill that would give Congress the power to review and approve Barack Obama’s deal with Iran. Better yet, the legislation appears to be veto-proof, so nothing Obama can do with his pen can stop the combined Democrat and Republican caucuses. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) told MSNBC, “We’ve reached an agreement and I’m confident that it will carry out the two major purposes of the bill: an orderly way to review the agreements when they’re submitted and the timing … in the event that there’s material breaches.” Under the tentative bill, which has yet to leave the committee, Congress will have 30 days to review and vote on Obama’s Iran treaty. Obama will have 12 days to veto Congress’ decision, and Congress has 10 days to override him. Meanwhile, the White House has been lobbying for Congress to drop the matter because it interferes with Obama’s go-it-alone foreign policy strategy. Well boo hoo. If individual lawmakers don’t amend the legislation and splinter Congress — for example, adding resolutions requiring Iran to recognize the state of Israel — then the body has a chance at finally stopping Obama. More…

Update: Barack Obama indicated he “would be willing” to sign the bill, so who knows? Sanity may prevail.
