Secretive Hillary Can’t Be Trusted

Hillary Clinton declared again this week she wants all her emails released by the State Department, but National Journal’s Ron Fournier, for one, isn’t buying it: “I don’t believe her because a person’s actions are more revealing than words.” And boy did Clinton’s action speak loudly. Aside from using a personal email server and address specifically to hide her emails from the public, only when she was busted did she turn over 55,000 printed pages to the State Department just so it would take ages to sort it out. A judge denied State’s plan to wait until 2016 to release the emails, ordering a rolling release every 60 days.

Additionally, her track record with Freedom of Information Act requests while at State wasn’t exactly stellar. The Wall Street Journal reports that her staff “scrutinized politically sensitive documents requested under public-records law and sometimes blocked their release.” In several cases, her staff interfered with FOIA requests for political reasons — the Keystone pipeline and Bill Clinton’s lucrative speaking engagements are but two examples. In fact, a Journal source claims Clinton’s chief of staff, Cheryl Mills, “told a records specialist that if he released records she wanted held back, Mrs. Clinton’s office wouldn’t comply with any future document requests on any topic.” It wasn’t long ago that the Associated Press sued over Clinton’s stonewalled FOIA requests. So it doesn’t seem the story of Clinton obfuscation is going to go way just because Hillary ignores it.
