Obama Considering Jane Kelly for SCOTUS
He’s trying to make this nomination political.
Barack Obama is continuing his attempt to bait Republican senators to bend to his will in his newest consideration for Antonin Scalia’s Supreme Court seat. At first, Obama reportedly considered Nevada Governor Brian Sandovol, a Republican. Sandovol declined the possible nomination.
Reportedly, Obama is now considering Judge Jane Kelly for the high court. The appellate judge from Iowa previously earned praised from Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley when she was nominated to her current position in 2013. Grassley chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, one of the first stops in the nominating process for a new judge. Last week, Grassley joined the rest of the Republican senators on the committee in sending a letter saying that they would not consider any Obama nominee. But would Grassley cave for a fellow Iowan? He’s up for re-election this year…
In an interview, Grassley said he hopes Kelly will eventually be one of the top candidates for the next president. No matter who is the nominee, though, Grassley believes the lame-duck president should not pick the next SCOTUS judge. “In this particular instance,” Grassley said, “it has got to be the process, and the person doesn’t matter.” That won’t stop Obama from making this nomination political.
