Sometimes I begin to wonder if it isn’t rapidly approaching the time when the U.S. government needs to be rebuilt. Fire them all and start over. “AM radio is the only commercial nighttime radio medium that has any range. FM is line-of-sight. In college, I used to listen to WQXR in New York, WOWO in Indiana, and a third station in North Carolina. U.S. automakers have decided to (idiotically) copy Europe and produce new cars with no AM radios. In my opinion, this may be considered a conspiracy to eliminate sources of news for the general public in times of emergencies. It also eliminates broadcast venues for conservative talk radio hosts. It’s too easy to fabricate misinformation, and I think it should be easily identified by a watermark or text disclaimer until further understood. “I recall a time when FEMA gave/issued mobile homes to those who had adequate ‘rising water’ coverage in southeast Texas, while those who had no hurricane insurance would be allowed to apply for a standard mortgage loan with federal backing. Several of our friends lost everything and had to move back in with parents. By the way, the recipients of the mobile homes sold them at discounted rates FOR CASH.” —Texas

“Some vehicles with internal combustion engines also have lithium batteries instead of lead-acid batteries. There are also toy cars and yard equipment powered by lithium batteries. The same warning applies to all of these — if they’ve been flooded, remove the battery and move it to a safe location. DO NOT put it out in the open where it can be rained upon! If the battery pack appears to have remained dry and it is at normal temperature, it may be safe to put back in service after a few days. If it’s unusually warm, get it away from buildings or flammable vegetation (handle it like a bomb), bury it in dry sand if possible, and contact the fire department for further instructions. If it’s smoking or leaking, get away, then call 911.” —Minnesota

“After a number of retracted publications in various scientific disciplines forced because of bad or fraudulent data analysis, it is now standard to make data sets available for public view. There are methods to anonymize the data when it involves treatment of individuals. The refusal to provide the data suggests an ulterior motive, or a data set so small that anonymizing may not be effective. In the latter case, the validity of the study is small to nonexistent.” —Minnesota
