The Patriot Post® · Sleazy Swalwell Sticks It Out

It’s perhaps a sad sign of the times that the Eric Swalwell story is no longer the Eric Swalwell story.

Instead, it’s the Nancy Pelosi story. I say this because the Democrat Party is in House-or-bust mode between now and Tuesday, November 3, and Eric Swalwell’s sickening behavior is a dangerous distraction from that single-minded objective. And no one knows this better than Nancy Pelosi. Swalwell’s fate is thus in her cold, calculating hands.

If Swalwell were just any flatulent, Fang Fangy, failed presidential candidate, Pelosi’s decision about his political future would be a pretty easy one. But Pelosi has for years taken this fellow Bay Area leftist under her wing, first by giving him cherry House committee assignments while he was still a rookie, and then by inexplicably allowing him to remain on the House Intelligence Committee after he’d been, er, sexually compromised by a Communist Chinese spy. Maybe her thinking was: Who knows more about the espionage tactics of our nation’s foremost geopolitical foe than my boy Eric?

When it rains, it pours. Alas, were it only these pesky sexual assault allegations. Swalwell is also under investigation for lying about his illegal Brazilian nanny.

One gets the sense, though, that with control of the House of Representatives likely to hinge on a relative handful of contested seats, and with Friday’s revelations of Swalwell’s alleged sexual assault of a former staffer heaped atop earlier allegations of his sexual harassment of various staff members, Pelosi isn’t going to fart around.

Yesterday, Swalwell announced that he’d suspended his California gubernatorial campaign to replace the term-limited Greasy Gavin Newsom — a campaign that saw him as the leading Democrat contender in a deep-blue state. Swalwell’s supporters have since scattered like cockroaches, and it’ll be interesting to see where they coalesce, because a bad field of Democrat candidates in our nation’s most important state just got even worse. Katie Porter? Yuck. Tom Steyer? Hah. Could conservative cueball Steve Hilton really win?

Not surprisingly, Swalwell came out Friday to deny all the allegations, even while delicately admitting that he’s not “perfect,” not “a saint,” and that he has made “mistakes in judgment.” But then he does what married Democrats always do: they apologize not to their victims but to their wives. “But those mistakes are between me and my wife. And to her, I apologize deeply for putting her in this position.”

Here, it’s interesting to compare Swalwell’s staged sad-sackery to Bill Clinton’s finger-wagging denial during the Monica Lewinsky affair. While Clinton went with an angry, in-your-face defiance, Swalwell is trying to thread a needle, to smooth-talk his way through these very serious and very credible allegations without alienating the Democrats’ single white cat lady constituency, which is crucial to their political fortunes.

“These allegations of sexual assault are flat false,” he claimed. “They are absolutely false. They did not happen. They have never happened. And I will fight them with everything that I have. They also come on the eve of an election where I have been the frontrunner candidate for governor in California.”

Swalwell then tries to toot his own horn as a steadfast and chivalrous protector of women — except when he’s, you know, getting them drunk and raping them.

“For over 20 years,” he doth protest too much, “I have served the public — as a city councilman, as a member of Congress, and as a prosecutor who went to court on behalf of victims, particularly on behalf of sexual assault victims.”

He added, “I will defend myself with the facts and, where necessary, bring legal action. My focus in the coming days is to be with my wife and children and defend our decades of service against these lies.”

Swalwell does have the benefit of familiarity here. I mean, in the #MeToo era, it seems that Democrat dirtbags far outnumber Republican ones — from Bill Clinton to Harvey Weinstein to Cesar Chavez. So perhaps Democrat voters will just sort of shrug all this off. Or perhaps not.

Again, though, Swalwell’s fate is out of his hands. He’s been outed as a scumbag at best, and a rapist at worst, and his political fortunes are in Nancy Pelosi’s hands. You can bet that foremost among her cold, hard, cynical calculations is whether the Democrats can afford to keep him in Congress.
