The Patriot Post® · Democrats Fight Tooth and Nail to Prevent Voting Reform
As a constitutional Republic, voting is an important portion of the political process, but a stark difference in approach has separated the two major parties over the last 30 years or so. On balance, Republicans and conservatives would love a huge turnout of citizens and properly registered voters who have their photo IDs ready on Election Day. By contrast, Democrats are happy to hand out ballots like candy to anyone and everyone during their interminable election season, and then keep counting votes for days or weeks afterward.
Somehow, they always seem to come from behind to win. Right, Spencer Pratt?
Even so, when a measure like the SAVE America Act is poll-tested, generally, 70 to 80% of Americans support these commonsense changes, such as the aforementioned photo ID at the ballot box. Yet despite President Donald Trump’s constant cajoling of GOP Senate leadership to eliminate the filibuster and cancel the August recess so it can be passed, they can’t seem to get enough votes to do so. Democrats are a wall of opposition, and certain Republicans are squishy about it as well.
It also doesn’t help that Senator Mitch McConnell has been absent with a medical issue. He’s the head of the Senate Rules Committee that would decide whether the bill passes muster as a budget reconciliation bill, eliminating the 60-vote cloture threshold. In other words, only 50 of the 53 Senate Republicans would need to vote yes, knowing Vice President JD Vance would break the tie.
As we have learned over the last nine years, though, President Trump pursues his pet issues via multiple paths. Knowing the slings and arrows electoral reform would receive through the legislative process, back in March, the president signed Executive Order 14399. The American Spectator’s David Catron explains, “[It] direct[s] the U.S. Postal Service to create a rule whereby any state that intends to send mail-in ballots to voters must provide a list of those eligible to participate in federal elections or the USPS ‘shall not transmit’ those ballots. The obvious goal of the EO is to keep ballots from reaching people who are not eligible to vote.”
Catron wrote his piece in the wake of a “big win” for the Trump administration, as it allowed the Postal Service to move forward with the task. A week later, however, the 23 Democrat-run states that had sued in June to block the executive order prevailed. The First Circuit Court agreed with the Democrat-run states, saying, “Under the Constitution, state and local officials are responsible for administering federal elections.” (If you’re keeping score, the two Biden appointees on the three-judge panel were the yes votes while the Trump appointee objected.)
“The First Circuit’s decision applies only to the 23 states that sued over the executive order, possibly creating an uneven legal landscape between red and blue states,” ABC News reported. “A federal appeals court in D.C. last week lifted an injunction that more broadly blocked the executive order, and it is unclear if the Postal Service plans to move forward with the changes in states not covered by the remaining injunction.”
President Trump asked the Supreme Court to take up the case.
One of the states that sued is New Jersey, but the Garden State is now under fire for a “glitch” that allowed at least 6,600 noncitizens to register to vote. Governor Mikie Sherrill — a Democrat, naturally — threw her predecessor under the bus for “reckless failures” and rejecting transparency.
But as Matt Kittle notes at The Federalist, “Blocking documents is not a good look for a governor who claims she won’t be like the last guy who wasn’t transparent. Sherrill won’t even turn over the information to the Department of Justice, which on Tuesday gave the state five business days to release it.” More importantly, he quotes election expert Hans von Spakovsky, who said, “What we don’t know is how many aliens registered who falsely checked ‘yes’ that they were citizens. Since New Jersey does no citizenship verification, we don’t know what that number is. But clearly 6,600 is not the total of aliens in New Jersey registered to vote.”
Even with that revelation, Democrats continue to circle the wagons and do what they do best: blame Donald Trump. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries [claimed(https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/senate/4663796/jeffries-trump-gop-noncitizens-new-jersey-voter-rolls/), “Unfortunately, what we’ve seen from Donald Trump is that in this particular case, Republicans have adopted voter suppression as an electoral strategy because they have failed to actually deliver on making life more affordable for the American people.” Setting aside the fact that Democrats created the 25% Bidenflation era, perhaps Jeffries would like to explain how noncitizens are being suppressed for a right they’re not supposed to have?
As I said up top, conservatives like me would love a huge turnout of citizens and properly registered voters who have their photo IDs ready on Election Day (and I would add well-informed to the list). Twenty-seven states are cooperating with President Trump on this one, so thoughtful residents of the other 23 may want to question what their states have to hide.
