Early last month, first-term Michigan Democrat Senator and former CIA officer Elissa Slotkin told a lie to attendees at the Indiana Democrat Party’s state convention.

Now, granted, politicians lie all the time, but this particular lie hasn’t gotten nearly enough attention.

“Um, the other thing that we blocked yesterday was the SAVE Act, right?” she said. “Which was literally [loud cheers] … would literally allow this administration to rig our democracy so that it would be hard for any Democrat in any state to win any election, um, and disenfranchise all married women in the meantime, by the way, and just, uh, you’d have to show your birth certificate at the polls if you have a married name.”

This is vile fear-mongering stuff. Indeed, it’s a psyop directed at the American people, and Slotkin knows exactly what she’s doing — just as she did when she led the Scummy Six insurrectionists in their effort to sow discord and destroy cohesion within our military ranks.

Slotkin knows full well why 85% of whites, 82% of Latinos, and even 76% of blacks — the most historically suspicious voting bloc in America — all support showing photo ID for voting, while similar percentages support showing proof of citizenship before being registered to vote: because these measures make sense.

The goal for Slotkin, then, is multifaceted: to link the legislation to the person whom she and her fellow Democrats most revile, Donald Trump; to lie about what the legislation does and doesn’t do; and, finally, to dismiss the SAVE America Act as unnecessary because the thing it proposes to fix — fraudulent voting — isn’t really a problem at all.

And it’s this last claim — specifically, that illegal aliens and noncitizens aren’t being registered to vote — that was exposed as fraudulent yesterday when we learned that some 6,600 noncitizens were, ahem, accidentally registered to vote in New Jersey.

As the Appropriated Press reports, Governor Mikie Sherrill “blamed a Motor Vehicle Commission system software error but said a preliminary analysis showed that fewer than 400 of those who registered that way went on to cast ballots.”

So you see, folks, there’s nothing here to see, because only around 400 illegal votes were cast.

As for root causes along the road to hell, here’s Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey: “Well, oopsie! Who could have seen that coming? Practically everyone who opposed the Motor Voter Act that Bill Clinton pushed in the 1990s, as well as every automatic-registration scheme that has come down the pike since.”

“I am appalled,” said the cheating governor of New Jersey in a statement meant to deflect responsibility to the state’s previous Democrat administration, “by the reckless failures that allowed this to happen and the lack of transparency shown by those in charge at the time.”

But wait. There’s more. Somehow, Donald Trump must be to blame, right? Sure enough, as the New York Post reports, “When asked about the possibility of Trump using New Jersey as an example of vulnerable elections, [Sherrill] declared: ‘I think that Donald Trump has done more to undermine free elections in this country than certainly anyone in my lifetime, including [Russian President] Vladimir Putin.’” (Credit here to Sherrill for a clever twofer: blaming Trump for the Democrats’ incompetence or malfeasance, and reanimating the corpse of the Democrats’ Russia collusion hoax.)

All this happens less than a week after Trump’s prime-time address, in which he pointed out that “nearly 250,000 noncitizens were registered to vote in California, New Jersey, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, with up to 35,152 wrongly enrolled in the Garden State.”

I mean, 6,600 here and 250,000 there, and pretty soon you’re talking about real potential for voter fraud — especially in a country in which 43,000 votes decided the 2020 presidential election in favor of Joe Biden.

Which brings me back to Slotkin. She knows that if the Democrats can’t cheat, they can’t win. Which is why they’re fighting hammer-and-sickle to keep the SAVE America Act from reaching the necessary 60-vote threshold in the Senate, where they have a willing partner, a useful McConnellite idiot named John Thune, leading the Republicans.

Yesterday, though, we got a bit of good news, at least in the House, where Republicans cleared a key procedural hurdle to advance three separate efforts to pass elements of the SAVE America Act.

We still have a long way to go in this country to fix our elections, and of this much we can be certain: We’ll get no help and plenty of obstruction and obfuscation from the Democrats.
