Win or lose, anyone who thought Donald Trump would go gentle into that good night was gravely mistaken — especially with respect to our nation’s number-one geopolitical foe.
As Axios reports, “President Trump will enact a series of hardline policies during his final 10 weeks to cement his legacy on China,” according to senior administration officials with direct knowledge of the plans.
This reporting seems spot-on, except the part about “his final 10 weeks.” The president and his team are still insisting there will be a smooth transition to a second Trump term.
Maybe Axios hasn’t yet gotten the memo, but the president’s legal team seems to think this election is rife with fraud and a long way from being resolved.
The communist Chinese, of course, would love nothing more than to see Donald Trump fly off to Mar-a-Lago and a far friendlier and more malleable Joe Biden take his place. Why? Because where previous presidents of both parties have let the Chinese run roughshod over us in terms of trade and technological theft, the Trump administration has been tough on the Chinese. As for Biden, his family’s recently revealed but largely ignored influence peddling in China, which our Mark Alexander has detailed extensively, would make him highly susceptible to coercion and compromise.
Put another way: Trump rightly believes China to be our nation’s biggest geopolitical threat. Biden, on the other hand, has been heaping praise on the Chinese for decades, and he thinks our greatest threat is Russia. (Far cry from his stance in 2012, we know.)
Unfortunately for the ChiComs, the remaining two months of Trump’s first term aren’t likely to be pleasant ones. As a senior Trump official put it: “Over the coming weeks, the Trump administration will continue to expand the depth and breadth of the historic actions it has taken over the past four years to protect the vital interests of the United States and its allies countering Beijing’s predatory and coercive behaviors.”
Specific actions being considered include protecting U.S. technology from exploitation by the Chinese military. This would be of a piece with a recent Trump executive order barring U.S. companies from doing business with the Chinese military-industrial complex, which, as Trump put it, “constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat.”
Another extraordinary threat from the Chinese is its push for global 5G telecommunications dominance. As the Washington Examiner reports, “It is believed the use of Chinese-owned Huawei technology in fifth-generation wireless telecommunications will also soon see a renewed focus by the Trump administration, with plans to ratchet up the pressure on allies not to use Huawei and to warn that continuing to do so could result in a reduction of U.S. intelligence sharing. The Justice Department and U.S. intelligence agencies believe Huawei and other Chinese companies are working hand in hand with the Chinese government.”
Beyond the 5G fight, the Trump administration plans further sanctions due to the communist regime’s continued human rights abuses of its minority Uyghur population, its illegal power grab and heavy-handedness in Hong Kong, and its illegal and unregulated fishing industry.
“President Trump has absolutely changed the game,” says Trump National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot, “when it comes to implementing strong actions on the Chinese Communist Party over the past four years and forging a bipartisan and international consensus on the need to counter Beijing’s harmful policies.”
Joe Biden? He has no comment at this time.
