It’d be one thing if the speech-suppressors at The Washington Post were calling on their friends at Facebook to crack down on the spread of misinformation. Like, for example, the misinformation recently spread by Joe Biden’s CDC about the rate of COVID infection in Florida. But this isn’t that. Rather, it’s just the opposite.
What we have here is a call by the Post for Facebook to censor inconvenient, incontrovertible truths being told by the GOP.
The headline of the article is innocent enough: “Republicans raise money on Facebook by tying migrant influx to covid surge.” And why shouldn’t they? When Democrats are cracking down on the unvaccinated and bringing back the masking mandates, all while turning a blind eye to the unvaccinated and mask-free masses streaming across our southern border, there to be transported in the dead of night to parts unknown, why shouldn’t the GOP raise awareness of it? And why shouldn’t it build its campaign war chest in the process?
If Democrats object, and if they’re worried about getting shellacked in the 2022 midterms, they ought to try changing their ruinous policies. The momentum that’s building against them now is what we call representative democracy.
The article’s subhead, though, is more insidious than its headline: “[Wyoming Senator] John Barrasso is among those seeking donations by suggesting immigrants are exacerbating the pandemic. Last year, Facebook said a similar claim amounted to hate speech.”
Hate speech? Since when does telling the truth amount to hate speech? COVID-positive illegals really have come across our border, and in record numbers. As our Thomas Gallatin noted last week, “There’s a spiking number of COVID-positive illegal migrants (up over 900%), with Texas now setting new infection records.”
The number of COVID-positive illegals is way, way up in Texas, but any mention of this sad fact is apparently “hate speech.”
So, this factual post from Senator Barrasso is hate speech: “The CDC and Joe Biden are telling Americans to MASK UP but are letting THOUSANDS of COVID-19 positive illegal immigrants into our country!”
And this one from North Carolina Congressman Ted Budd is also hate speech: “If Joe Biden really wanted to get COVID-19 under control in our country, he would address the crisis at our southern border. Letting unvaccinated ILLEGAL immigrants come into our country is a threat to American citizens.”
So far, Facebook has resisted the Post’s call to censor political speech with which it disagrees — political speech like that of Barrasso and Budd — but how long will Facebook’s thought police hold out? At this time next year, will Facebook change its tune and once again start suppressing conservative speech just ahead of the crucial midterm elections? As the Post made clear, Facebook did so last year. We can attest to that.
“One of the gravest threats to our democracy today,” said former President Donald Trump in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed about his class action lawsuit against the speech silencers, “is a powerful group of Big Tech corporations that have teamed up with government to censor the free speech of the American people.”
He’s right, of course, and Big Tech knows it. But Big Tech also knows that when push comes to shove, it has staunch allies in both the mainstream press and the Democrat Party. If you think we’re overstating this, think back to a few weeks ago, when Joe Biden accused Facebook of “killing people” by refusing to censor what he considered “misinformation” on its platform about the COVID-19 vaccines. And what did Biden do just days later? He walked it back. Entirely.
“Facebook isn’t killing people,” he said in the fullest of flip-flops, meekly explaining that he meant to accuse “a dozen users, but not the social media platform itself, of spreading deadly lies about Covid vaccines.”
In short, Joe Biden blinked, and he bowed to his buddies in Big Tech.
