President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address was as much of a train wreck as predicted. There were gaffes, there was incoherency, and there were lies. But there were also some glimmers of sense (if we charitably take Biden at his word), and these crucial pivots from the radical Left would go a long way toward helping restore some semblance of normalcy.

Commonsense statement #1: “The answer is not to defund the police. It’s to fund the police.”

This is actually a position that Biden has held since the summer of 2020, though he was markedly silent during BLM’s burning, looting, and murdering. Only when he saw his party’s anti-cop stance crushing him in the polls did he voice the opinion to fund the police.

In general, the “defund police” movement has been an unpopular stance for Democrats. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi even made it clear a few weeks ago that defunding the police was not in line with the Democrat Party’s values. And as House Majority Whip James Clyburn bemoaned last July: “I can tell you, ‘defund the police’ is a non-starter. … I talk to people every day, and ‘defund the police’ is a chokehold around the Democratic Party.”

President Biden formally declaring his views on defunding police at the State of the Union drew bipartisan applause. All except for the infamous Squad. Representative Cori Bush yelled at Biden and pointed at her shirt depicting backlog clemency petitions. It’s not surprising she was upset, “defund the police” being her pet project and all. Another Squad member, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, was among those who refused to stand. She recently and outrageously called the rising crime rates “hysteria.”

Commonsense statement #2: “If we are to advance liberty and justice, we need to secure the border and fix the immigration system.”

The border crisis has been a huge issue since Biden took office. He swung wide the flood gates, and now there are so many illegal immigrants in the states that it compromises the integrity of the country in multiple ways.

Our country is a country of legal immigrants. It is a proud legacy that we all share, but the invasion at our southern border is not a peaceful, legal, and safe situation for the immigrant themselves or the American people.

This particular statement from President Biden was met with uproarious applause from the Republicans who have been championing this reform since Biden started the crisis.

These two issues might actually make headway in the House and the Senate if Biden is serious about stopping the damage these policies have already inflicted.

But, as we know, all of these are just words. Without action behind it, change and healing won’t happen.

Even so, perhaps we can be encouraged that the pressure behind these issues (prominently seen in disparaging polls) is finally getting the attention of President “Houseplant” Biden.
