A Challenge Awaits the DC Convoy

There are valuable lessons to be learned from the nearly month-long Canadian truckers’ experience.

“It’s time to end the declaration of national emergency concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and restore our nation’s constitution.” So say the truckers of The People’s Convoy, who are now making their way from all parts of the country to their ultimate destination: Washington, DC.

As the Washington Examiner reports: “Thousands of U.S. truckers inspired by the Canadian Freedom Convoy are planning to travel across the country toward Washington, D.C., in protest of continued COVID-19 restrictions and mandates. The protest [departed] from Adelanto Stadium in California on Feb. 23. It will then make its way across Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, head up toward Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, and then come down toward Maryland and D.C.”

Having watched their brother truckers spend 24 peaceful days in the Canadian capital of Ottawa before finally being smashed by statist Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the American truckers no doubt saw what worked and what didn’t. Shutting down the commercially critical Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, for example, didn’t work. All it did was badly inconvenience commuters and greatly muck up the supply chain. Thus, the challenge confronting the American truckers will be one of discipline and determination: sticking to the things that reflected favorably on the Canadians while avoiding the things that will allow the Democrats and their media lickspittles to pounce.

Nancy Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said, “We are monitoring the situation closely.” Translation: We’re just waiting for the slightest hint of misbehavior from you wannabe insurrectionists, at which point we’ll use our media fellow-travelers to blow it all out of proportion and thereby discredit the entire convoy. And therein lies the trap.

Don’t believe us? Get a load of this headline from The New York Times: “A Truck Caravan With Far-Right Links Heads to Washington, D.C.” And this subhead: “Many backers of the caravan, planned as an American version of the past month’s chaotic Canadian protest, have connections to [wait for it!] the violent attack on the Capitol in January 2021.”

Remember: January 6 is all they have.

As for how these truckers comport themselves, it’s not good enough to claim that the other side’s protesters are worse. They are, and unequivocally so. But just because their Black Lives Matter thugs decide to block the flow of traffic on intersections and interstates doesn’t mean that our truckers ought to do the same. After all, we hold our side to a higher standard.

Here’s the truckers’ message to Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and our nation’s lawmakers — those who often seem to forget that they’re public servants:

To our elected officials that believe they rule us: YOU work for US. Our Constitution was written to provide enough power to act on a national level, but not enough to deprive the people of fundamental rights. The people are prepared to see this challenge through — as we have seen through all challenges to our Freedom in the past. And we will prevail and prosper.

In a way, the American truckers must’ve wished they’d gone first. After all, as columnist Rick Moran notes: “Enthusiasm for the convoys may be waning. Mask mandates are disappearing across the nation and the Supreme Court has scuttled the idea of a national vaccine mandate. Certainly, there are other issues to protest, but none that raise the ire of Americans quite so much.”

All that, and now there’s a hot war to suck all the oxygen out of the newsroom.

When the People’s Convoy makes it to DC, hundreds of unarmed National Guard troops will be there to greet them. Which is why we’d love nothing more than to see some evening news footage of a bunch of tractor trailers parked all along the mall, flying American flags and Gadsden flags and Trump flags, vigorously exercising their First Amendment rights, and joyfully honking their horns. What we’d hate to see is a bunch of all-important and underappreciated supply-chain foot soldiers behaving badly, choking down beltway traffic and causing problems for commuters, families, the elderly, and especially emergency vehicles.

Such a spectacle would only serve the Democrats, as it would provide a much-needed diversion from Joe Biden’s sorry State of Disunion speech. That speech is scheduled for Tuesday, the same day of the convoy’s arrival.
