Monday Brief
Barack Has a DREAM
The Foundation
"The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate the powers of all the departments in one, and thus to create whatever the form of government, a real despotism." --George Washington
Government

"With his announcement that he will, in effect, unilaterally enact a key feature of long-debated immigration reform, President Obama is doing something he has always wished to do: Get around a Congress that doesn't see the issue his way. In a speech to La Raza last July, Obama said that on the question of immigration reform, 'some people want me to bypass Congress and change the laws on my own.' Obama said he found the idea 'very tempting' but had to reject it because 'that's not how our system works.' The president was in a somewhat more combative mood last September, when he addressed the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. 'As I mentioned when I was at La Raza a few weeks back, I wish I had a magic wand and could make this all happen on my own,' Obama told the group. 'There are times where -- until Nancy Pelosi is speaker again -- I'd like to work my way around Congress.' ... At the time, Obama conceded only that really big changes require the approval of Congress. 'We live in a democracy, and at the end of the day, I can't do this all by myself under our democratic system,' he said. 'If we're going to do big things -- whether it's passing this jobs bill, or the DREAM Act, or comprehensive immigration reform -- we're going to have to get Congress to act.' Now, Obama has decided, in the words of an Associated Press report, to 'stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives,' a policy that 'will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants.' The action, which Republicans call amnesty and the administration calls 'deferred action,' will surely spark GOP calls to rein in the president's unilateral measures. The question will be whether any Democratic members of Congress, who might agree with Obama's policy goals, will dare express unhappiness with how he enacts them." --columnist Byron York
Political Futures
"Politically, Obama calculates that some polls showing the current likely Hispanic support for him in the high 50s or low 60s would not provide enough of a margin in critical states ... to counteract the growing slippage of the independent vote and the energy of the clinger/tea-party activists. Thus, what was not legal or advisable in 2009, 2010, or 2011, suddenly has become critical in mid-2012. ... When you collate this recent act with the class-warfare rhetoric, the 'punish our enemies' threats, the president's and Eric Holder's serial racialist statements, the huge borrowing, the national-security leaks, the takeover of health care, the push for redistributive taxes, and even the trivial appointments like a Van Jones, Anita Dunn, or Armendariz, you can fairly conclude that Obama most certainly did not like the way the United States operated for the last 30 or so years, and has tried his best, through hook or crook, to change America in ways that simply were not possible through legislative or even judicial action. Give the president credit. He has thrown down the gauntlet and essentially boasted: This is my vision of the way the new America should work -- and if you don't like it, try stopping me in November, if you dare." --historian Victor Davis Hanson

Re: The Left
"Obama's depiction of the Bush years is wrong in just about every possible way. First, Bush was hardly a deregulator. In fact, the nation's regulatory budget nearly doubled in his eight years, and regulatory staffing climbed 42%, according to an annual report on the federal regulatory state by George Mason University's Mercatus Center. Nor did Bush's tax cuts devastate the budget. In fact, revenues as a share of gross domestic product hit 18.5% in 2007, which is above the post-World War II average. And deficits fell three years in a row to a low of $160 billion. Unemployment, meanwhile, dropped to 4.4% just before the recession hit. And as we've pointed out on countless occasions, the financial crisis that caused the recession was not the result of too little government, but of far too much government intervention in the banking industry. Then again, Obama can't even keep his own complaints straight. Moments after lambasting Bush's tax-cutting, deregulating ways, he was bragging about how he's imposed fewer regulations than Bush, cut taxes more than a dozen times and how he's not a big spender. (None of that is true.) The real question before voters isn't whether they want to return to some dark, mythical past of Obama's imagination, but whether they want four more years of a dismal present characterized by stagnant growth, chronic unemployment, massive deficits and a president who is utterly clueless about how to fix any of it." --Investor's Business Daily
Essential Liberty
"The idea of human liberty and its political corollary ... is not applicable only to Americans. Rather, it is a universal principle applicable to all people. Thomas Paine famously observed that 'the cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind.' But this cause is contested today, both domestically and internationally. Domestically, the progressive administrative state continues to encroach on the republican government established by the Constitution. Abroad, tyrants and terrorists try to extinguish Lady Liberty's flame. American sovereignty is also increasingly threatened by international institutions that have little respect for human rights, the rule of law, and self-government. ... The abandonment of the nation-state system in general and the American constitutional order in particular is unnecessary and at odds with the reason and experience of our experiment in constitutional self-government. The ideas of America's founding are timeless. And yet the defense of freedom is never complete, but requires eternal vigilance -- morally, legally, and materially. Not only must the cloth and colors of the flag endure, but the liberty it represents must not perish from the earth." --Heritage Foundation's Marion Smith
For the Record
"Job growth has been slipping badly for three months. Retail sales and factory orders are down two straight months. Real incomes are flat. Household wealth is way underwater from the housing collapse, dropping nearly 40 percent in the last three measured years. And gross domestic product was an anemic 1.9 percent in the first quarter. Nearly all leading Wall Street economists are marking down their second-quarter estimates to 2 percent or less. But here's the key point: 2 percent growth is not a recovery. ... The good side of commodity deflation is that oil and retail gas prices have fallen considerably; the bad side is that manufacturers may hold back production and that debtors have to climb out of deeper holes. As someone who always touts the merits of a strong King Dollar, why am I complaining now that we have one? That's my second reason for the latest economic stall: King Dollar is not being accompanied by lower tax rates. ... [I]nstead of easier taxes, a huge tax-hike cliff looms. ... It's hard to quantify, but it's quite possible that business hiring plans and consumer-spending expectations have been put on hold until folks can figure out future tax policy. All this is why the tax-cliff problem needs to be solved immediately." --economist Lawrence Kudlow
Opinion in Brief
"While pushing Congress to pass the $831 billion stimulus package in 2009, President Obama promised that millions of jobs would be created, and or saved, and that the nation's unemployment rate would fall to less than 8.0%. Three years on, there are 23 million unemployed, or under employed, Americans, the unemployment rate is 8.2%. Final GDP numbers for 2011 show a not-too-sterling growth rate of 1.7%. ... In spite of all of this dreary economic news, President Obama actually claimed that the economy is doing 'fine,' at least in the private sector. He is also pushing for another stimulus. Given the results from the first stimulus, why would any responsible Congress critter give this president even one more dollar of American treasure to waste?" --columnist John Lillpop

The Gipper
"[G]overnment does not tax to get the money it needs; government always needs the money it gets. Now, your son can be extravagant with his allowance and you can lecture him day after day about saving money and not being extravagant, or you can solve the problem by cutting his allowance." --Ronald Reagan
Faith & Family
"Last week news spread of a unique partnership between Planned Parenthood and the Los Angeles Unified School District -- Planned Parenthood now runs a 'health' clinic on the school grounds of Roosevelt High School, serving mostly teens from low-income, Latino families. ... While the Planned Parenthood clinic apparently doesn't do abortions on school premises, it takes little imagination to envision the direction their supposedly non-judgmental counseling will take for girls who do become pregnant. ... Planned Parenthood's on-campus presence ensures a steady diet of contraceptive pills, patches, and shots delivered to teens as young as 13, without their parents' knowledge or consent. ... And parents will have no clue what's being said or delivered, and no power to prevent it. ... It's up to us to take the reins of our child's sex education, to deliver the right messages about sex. ... Sex ed is not a once-and-done plumbing lesson but an ongoing effort to provide context and moral guidance according to your child's knowledge, maturity level, and experiences. ... Don't cede control to teachers, nurses, or clinic workers who not only don't know your child but also won't provide any moral context for the sexual messages they deliver." --columnist Rebecca Hagelin

"Alexander's Essay on Fatherhood is a great tribute to the full concept of 'Father,' and beautifully written. I would only add that I have always admired Tony Dungy, who from personal experience knows both the joy and the pain of being a Father. "This seems like a good time to remember that not all dads have the ability to be with their children this weekend. For those who are thousands of miles from home, fighting for the rest of us, giving us the chance to be with our loved ones, I can only say, 'Thank you, and God bless you and your families. Please come home safely.' We can never repay all the valiant and courageous young men (and women) for their service to their country." --Susan in CA
"In response to Friday's Digest, most everything Mr. Obama says any more is surreal and cringe worthy. He sounds like a little grade school kid who thinks by telling the same lies over and over will exonerate him or, if that doesn't work, he blames everyone else. The real tragedy is not Obama or his policies, but the strange fact that someone of his ilk and incompetence could actually be elected president in the first place." --Ken in Dayton, OH
"In regards to the leaking of classified material from the White House, this is not a case of long term national security but a case of short term political expediency. Most people realize that short term expedience usually results in long term failure, but then again, our Dear Leader, the Chosen One, isn't "most people.'" --Scott in El Dorado Hills, CA

Editor's Note: The following is satire.
"White House sources tell me Michelle flew into a jealous rage when informed of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's decision to limit soda sizes. She immediately gathered her staff in the East Wing and began creating a new set of proposals to reduce caloric consumption nationwide. White House Dossier has obtained a copy of the proposals. We provide for your perusal here the ten most effective and innovative ideas on the first lady's list. 1. Half & Half to be changed to Three Quarters & One Quarter. 2. McDonald's employees required to apply electric shock to customers every time they say 'Supersize it.' 3. All Marijuana imported into the United States must be specially formulated so as not to induce 'the munchies.' 4. Donuts now required to have two holes. 5. Parents permitted to feed children vegetables via suppository. 6. Girl Scouts required to warn customers about the potential health risks of Girl Scout Cookies. 7. New 'extra small' sodas in movie theaters served on a washcloth and must be sucked off. 8. Frozen yogurt must actually be frozen yogurt. 9. Hostess Cupcakes to be filled with mashed potatoes. 10. Federal law now prohibits unscrewing Oreos, eating the creme filling, and throwing out the cookies. Note: Mandatory jail time for performing this act using Double Stuff Oreos." --White House Dossier's Keith Koffler

Did you really feel the need to identify the last piece as satrire? With all the regulations coming out of the regime of marxist statist tyranny, you should have left the assertion out, most would figure out in what vein it was presented. Some of the Obamaos dictates would be better if thew were satire.

U.S. immigration laws: Congress creates them. Obama breaks them.
The U.S. private sector: - to be protected and preserved by the government. Obama and his Democrats assault it.
The U.S. Constitution: The Founders created it. Obama and his Democrats s**t on it.

The one and only reason that this immigration/amnesty is being pushed is because the present occupant of the Oval Office needs the vote. The one and only reason that voter I.D. laws are being beaten down is because the present occupant of the Oval Office, et.al.,needs the illegal votes like he had in the last election. Also, recall that the DOJ feels that harassment of voters at the polls is prefectly okay. It's definitely going to be an interesting show that unfolds. This November, we most likely will see voter fraud unlike we've ever seen previously.

Jill,
Your comments are depressing even though they're true.
I'll say one thing, that is, that if the correct change comes this November, and Obama is out, and conservatives have control of congress, we should get more "change" than we have ever seen. We must demand it!
That change needs to be in the form of reversing all of Obama's policies, and then to really clean house. Society has been right to despise Obama's regulations over the private sector. But now regulation should take on a new meaning. We need private sector regulation on government. Government should be downsized like no one has ever conceived before. Government should be driven from, interference with and competition against, the private sector. Executive orders need to be abolished, and the three branches of government need to be turned over to the constitutional constructionists of our society, for a complete overhaul and restoration to their original and fundamental purposes.

Addendum for 6/20/2012
In light of today's news, that Eric Holder has asked (and received) Obama for Executive Privilege in order to avoid having to release the Fast and Furious documents to Congress, I can confidently add eliminating Executive Privilege as another task towards the goal of cleaning house.
Obviously, Mr. Holder has a lot to hide. Despite this incredible new low in America, everyone please try to have a nice day.

Do you really think there are even ten honest Democrats in the Senate who will "do justice"? It takes a two-thirds concurrence of the Senate to convict in an impeachment trial. Given the extreme partisanship and historical dishonesty of the current majority leadership in the Senate, impeachment would be at best a waste of time. The only remedy is direct action by the people at the ballot box.

Yeah ... I have a dream also! My dream is to see the Obamination and all of his cohort brought up on charges of high treason. Then I would like to see them convicted, and sentenced as appropriate unter time of war for such acts. But its only a dream.
My other hope is to see this turd sent packing in November. If it doesn't happen, we will be seeing a civil war in this country.

In my opinion, yea, we've got a sick society. America and more importantly, its people, are under no obligation to allow a single immigrant, yet worldwide sentiment (especially if you listen to the MSM and to pandering politicians) seems to say that we're immigration pikers. We're selfish. We're mean.
Yet its America that often takes in political prisoners; its America that goes to war to prevent genocide in far-flung countries. And it's America that is bankrupting itself to provide entitlements to greedy, self-serving leeches, both domestic and foreign. Our foolish generosity is apparent, and apparently excessive.
I say that there is nothing wrong with our immigration laws. It's those who would steal themselves into America, plus the pandering politicians and the MSM, who are saying that we need immigration reform. They conclude that any immigration limits indicate a broken system.
Consider all their rhetoric, then compare our very liberal immigration policies to the strict policies of other countries and you will see clearly the Left's lies manipulation.
The only thing broken about our immigration laws is due to the fact that the People haven't risen up in revolt against seditionists like Obama, to prevent those laws from being broken time and again.

"The idea of human liberty and its political corollary ... is not applicable only to Americans. Rather, it is a universal principle applicable to all people." I used to agree with this statement by Marion Smith, but I no longer do. It is apparent that many people groups (most obviously Muslims) do not want liberty. Also, this sentiment has been used by our leaders to entangle America in all sorts of stupid wars (the most recent, Iraq and Afghanistan).

IMPEACHMENT? THATS just stupid! Do YOU, JERRY in Oregon, even have a clue on how the Impeachment process works? I think not, and you are ignorant of the process. No matter how much we (conservatives) want him removed, no matter how much we feel he has violated the Constitution, any Impeachment trial WOULD BE HELD IN HARRY REID'S CONTROLLED SENATE! GET REAL, HOW LIKELY IS THE CHANCE OF A CONVICTION? How likely is it that a democratic Senate will convict Obama of anything? That is the reason it is just plain STUPID for individuals to keep calling for Impeachment! STUPIDITY, in action!

You all have had interesting comments/disagreements about the law with regard to impeaching Obama. The Devil can certainly be in the details.
But if we all take a step backwards to see the big picture, we should all be able to get the take-home message that the whole thing needs tightening up. This president, more than most others, IS acting dictator-like. For a country with three branches of government separating powers and a constitution that codifies it all, for any president to be acting as a dictator is a perversion of our ideals, and should be rejected by us all.
This is my position, that we need to see the failings of our system so we can correct them legislatively. Whether these failings have been there all the while, or whether they are more recent perversions put into place by corrupt politicians trying to get around the system - they must be identified and corrected.
It seems to me that we need to get to the point where each political position has a scope of duties, and if anyone attempts to do anything outside their scope, automatic mechanisms should trigger to countermand it. As a practical matter, I don't know how to make that happen, but I think you all know what I mean.
Yes, there's value in lambasting Obama and talking of impeachment, but if we were to impeach him, we really wouldn't have fixed much because the protocols that allowed his abuses would still be in place.

Great question!! They cannot legally vote - but they do ! And the amazing part is that nobody seems to care.
All they have to do is check the box claiming to be a US citizen. Thats it ! NOBODY checks documentation for proof of citizenship.
Even in places trying to get a voter ID law - they are not calling for proof of citizenship at registration. We are screwed - We are letting our country be stolen from us by illegals and an out of control president. My question is, what in the HELL has kept Congress from stopping Obama's openly unconstitutional overstepping of his Constitutional powers and his out-of-control "Executive Orders", which he seems to think give him catre blanche to pas laws on his own when ever and however he sees fit. "The action, which Republicans call amnesty and the administration calls 'deferred action,' will surely spark GOP calls to rein in the president's unilateral measures." What have they been waiting for? We DO, IN FACT, still have a Constitution, and the President DOES, IN FACT, have limits on his personal power. Article 1 Section 1 of our Constitution is very clear on this matter, or am I living on another planet? I do know how to read the English language, so how can Oblunder get away with his many, many treasonous, openly unconstitutional acts?

Because to "stop" an executive order from taking effect, BOTH houses of Congress must vote to not allow whatever the president decrees in his order. Since Harry Reid, who controls the Senate is also a "communist/socialist" like Obama, the Senate will NEVER VOTE AGAINST THE PRESIDENT AND HIS AGENDA", so the end result is that instead of president Obama, we have "King Barry" with unlimited power. What needs to happen if the repubs can get the Senate, Keep the House and get the White House, is change the rules of the "executive order orocess", that allows "EITHER " house of Congress to stop an executive order, giving more "balance" to the process.
