Veterans Day 2011: A Tale of Two Marches

Semper Vigilo, Fortis, Paratus et FidelisAcross our nation, there is a sharp division between two groups of Americans marching to very different drummers.
I am not referring to the current politics of disparity promoting class warfare between the 35 percent of statists (dependents who label themselves "99 Percenters"), and the other 65 percent who are hard-working and self-reliant American citizens. The former are busy fomenting socialist protests in urban centers across our nation while the latter are busy working and caring for their families and communities.
Rather, the division I note is made plain by the vivid contrast in character between two groups -- those on the frontlines in defense of Liberty versus those who seek to subvert it.
On the right side of Liberty, we have American Patriots in uniform who, since the dawn of our great nation, have put their lives, fortunes and sacred honor on the line "to Support and Defend" the Liberty enshrined in our Constitution.
On the wrong side of history, we have Leftist cadres loyal to Barack Hussein Obama, who seek to supplant republican Liberty and its principle expression of free enterprise with socialist democracy. Although the so-called "99 Percenters" are marching to Obama's beat, their protests are trivial compared to the endemic threat to Liberty posed by the rest of the Leftist hegemony in control of our central government.

Could the contrast be any starker?
The threat of Obama's minions notwithstanding, I am greatly encouraged, especially on Veterans Day, by the fact that American Liberty is defended, first and foremost, by the current generation of Patriots within our Armed Services, and the plurality of citizens who support them. It is fitting that we would reverently honor those whom, for generations, have sought to defend Liberty.
Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, when on 11 November 1921, the remains of an unknown World War I American soldier were buried in Arlington National Cemetery, in recognition of WWI veterans and the official cessation of WWI hostilities "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" of 1918. President Warren Harding requested that "All ... citizens ... indulge in a period of silent thanks to God for these ... valorous lives, and of supplication for His Divine mercy ... on our beloved country." Inscribed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are the words, "Here lies in honored glory an American soldier known but to God."
In 1954, Congress was determined to additionally recognize the sacrifice of veterans before and since WWI, and those of future generations, and thereby proposed to recognize 11 November as Veterans Day. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, former Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in WWII, signed legislation establishing Veterans Day.
Insight into the sacrifice of our veterans and their families can be gained by noting that, since the American Revolution, tens of millions of Americans have served our nation with honor, and almost 1.2 million have died in defense of it. Another 1.4 million have been wounded, many gravely. The numbers, of course, offer no reckoning of the inestimable value of these Patriots' lives or the anguish borne by their families, but we do know that their sacrifices defended a most precious gift -- the gift of Liberty that we cherish to this day.

On previous Veterans Days, I have had the privilege of writing about great American Patriots who have profoundly influenced my life, including Roger Helle (USMC) and Roger Ingvalson (USAF). I have also profiled outstanding members of the current generation of uniformed Patriots such as Lee Miller (USA).
I am a humble descendant of generations of Patriots. My father, and his father before him, were Naval Aviators in WWII and WWI respectively. Our family lineage records veterans back to the American Revolution.
These men have heeded the call to serve others before self, and have sacrificed accordingly. And now, my eldest son has received his acceptance letter from the United States Naval Academy and is awaiting Air Force notification.
This personal backdrop, which has stewarded my full appreciation for veterans and the day we set aside to honor them, is a driving force behind The Patriot Post's mission of service to our nation and the military personnel who defend her.
Our mission is the antithesis of that pursued by the current commander in chief, as Obama demonstrated this week when his administration announced his rejection of a request to place a small prayer-adorned plaque adjacent to the World War II Memorial in Washington. This was not just any prayer, I might add, but President Franklin Roosevelt's D-Day call to prayer on 6 June 1944, as 57,000 American and 75,000 British and Canadian troops made their way into bloody battle to establish five beachheads on the coast of Normandy.

Roosevelt proclaimed, "Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. ... Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister Nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace -- a peace invulnerable to the schemings of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil. Thy will be done, Almighty God. Amen." The Department of Interior ruled that posting Roosevelt's prayer would undermine the purpose of the memorial. According to DoI's Bureau of Land Management Director, Robert Abbey, "Altering the memorial in this way ... will necessarily dilute this elegant memorial's central message and its ability to clearly convey that message to move, educate, and inspire its many visitors." Abbey said the plaque would "intrude" on the memorial.
Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH), who sponsored legislation to approve the plaque, said, "It is unconscionable that the Obama administration would stand in the way of honoring our nation's distinguished World War II veterans. President Roosevelt's prayer gave solace, comfort and strength to our nation and our brave warriors as we fought against tyranny and oppression."
Unfortunately, Obama and his administration have a sordid history of intentional omission when it comes to the notion that Liberty is "endowed by our Creator," and not some potentate or government. This is the fundamental basis for our Constitution's Rule of Law as opposed to the rule of men.

This revelation came in the same week that Obama chastised Congress for reaffirming the 1956 Act of Congress that made "In God We Trust" our national motto, while he was busy issuing an official statement "to Muslims worldwide" celebrating Hajj and Eid al-Adha. (Perhaps Obama should consult a veteran member of Congress, one willing to speak the truth about Islamo-fascism.)
Of course, you must recall that Obama was inculcated with the teachings of Jeremiah Wright, the disciple of hate who officiated at Obama's wedding and baptized his children. "'God Bless America'? No, no, no, g-d d--- America!" Wright raged in one of his frequent anti-American rants. "G-d d--- America for treating our citizens as less than human! G-d d--- America!"
At no time in generations has the contrast between those who support Liberty, and those who want to tear it down, been so striking.
Despite this contrast, America stands proud and free because our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen have stood bravely in harm's way -- now and for generations. For their steadfast devotion to duty, honor and country, we, the American People, offer our humble gratitude and heartfelt thanks.On this Veterans Day, and every day of the year, may God bless our men and women in uniform, those who have served before them, and their families. "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." (John 15:12-14)

As a final note, I received an email this morning similar to many we receive daily during our support campaigns. This message was from an aging and disabled Veteran: "Mr. Alexander, Just a note of thanks for all that your Patriot team does to promote Liberty. It does my heart good to know that there are those among the generations that follow mine, who are steadfast in their devotion to Liberty, and to sustaining it for the generations to come. Though I do what I can to promote The Patriot Post, please forgive my small donation. I would like to do more, but I am an old beat up Marine GySgt, and can barely make ends meet now. Semper Fi!" (Gunny, on this date, anniversary of the establishment of the Continental Marines in 1775, a special word of thanks to you, all our Naval Infantry brethren -- Semper Fi indeed!)

Oh Brother Where art Thou?
His name is Bill, we double dated to our high school graduation
back in 1962. He was my third baseman on my baseball team. We
were friends.
After graduation we went our separate ways. I joined the Air Force
and he went into the Marines. I volunteered for Vietnam but was
sent to Newfoundland, Canada. He went to Nam. His first tour
brought him two bronze stars, his second tour he got a third bronze
star, a purple heart and a silver star. He was the last man to leave
the infamous Hamburger Hill.
While wounded he carried off all the men that were wounded before
he left. How many lives did he save? He was involved in hand to
hand combat while doing this heroic act.
Bill never talked about it to me. His father read the letter that came
with the Silver Star. Bill probably just missed getting the Medal of
Honor by a tad. Bill never thought he was a hero, he was just a boy
from Kansas. While visiting him at his house, I had an gran mal
seizure. Bill’s medical training helped me recover rapidly. Again we
parted company, me to college, him another tour, his third.
The third tour was a disaster for Bill, his mind had held too much,
seen too much and he suffered a mental breakdown. Bill went
through numerous hospitals. Finally he was discharged and went
home to Kansas. I heard about his setback and made a point to visit
him. What a change. When we talked, he saw things, heard things
that were not there. He was still in Vietnam while in Kansas. My
heart went out to him. His heart was locked in some place where I
could not reach.
While driving, Bill hit and killed a pedestrian. Before his trial, he
jumped bond and skipped. Last I heard he was working on a ranch
maybe in Montana or Wyoming.
His parents have since passed away. I went to his father's funeral
and made a point of being there for Bill. I hope I see Bill again. Our
country owes much to the Bills of the world. Their suffering, their
pain, their lives are forever changed.
Freedom is just a word until we make the sacrifice to earn it.

Congratulations on your son being accepted to the Academy. My son got the Naval and Air Force Academies acceptance. He took Air Force, probably because I was Air Force enlisted. A great education
and comraderie with the best young patriots in the world. He is an aircraft commander now on B-52s and his parents are proud and salute our service personnel. God Bless America.

This is not necessarily a tribute, but information that all military retirees should know.
I received news yesterday that Senator McCain was going to submit a proposal to the Super Committee to strip military retirees of access to Tricare Prime as well as strip commissary and PX privileges. We retirees earned those benefits and rely on them. We've based our lives on having these benefits. If he's allowed to succeed in this attack on military retirees, be ready to re-institute the Draft. As you well know, all of the military branches rely on middle grade enlisted to perform necessary tasks and to train junior enlisted. These people will have no reason to stay for retirement.
Please contact your Senators, Representative, and all service organizations you belong to in order to stop this insanity before it gets started.

My son currently is serving in Afghanistan in the Air Force Security Forces. He will turn 20 11-22 while serving over there. My father and I are also war time Air Force Veterans. At least we earned our government checks by putting our life on the line.

As a Veteran who has been married to two Veterans, I take this opportunity to thank each and every Veteran who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afganistan, and who serve in peace time. It is my strong belief that every individual in America should be required to serve a minimum of two years in the military and to those who chose to serve I say thank you for the depths of my patriotic heart.

I don't see how any freedom loving American could state that this prayer to God for His protection and guidance in ridding the world of despots and tyranny; could water down the magnificent service of these men & women of our armed forces during WWII. This is just one more way a secular administration's officials are attempting to remove God from our history and our future. God Bless the USA and I never knew many atheists in foxholes who did not at least ask for help from a Higher Power when needed. God Help Us as a nation.

No, Mark....the President is not a fitting Commander and Chief. He has though brought to the front of my thinking, yours as well...that we as a nation cannot depend on Government to do the right things for the right reasons. In its stead, we the people have to do those things. IF we are successful, he will be one and gone. If we are not successful, our focus should be on putting men and women in the Senate and Congress who will not rubber stamp approval of his stupidity and arrogance. More so, sending patriots not politicians to counter his efforts to make this country another Greece, Italy, or Soviet Satellite.

We have a Marxist President with a radical agenda foreign to our heritage with his finger on the nuclear trigger.
His paternity and citizenship are suspect. He takes great pains to hide his background from us. He was educated by Muslims, Communists, and Harvard elitists. He emerged into the public eye from the cesspool of Chicago politics. As a “community organizer”, he got poor folks on the dole and squandered public funds in a failed attempt to subvert public schools to an ideological agenda.
He attended a Chicago Church whose hate-America Pastor is a foul-mouthed servant of Satan.
He is close friends with known terrorists.
He admires and bows before oil potentates and tin-pot dictators. (We have pictures.)
He treats America’s traditional allies with contempt. He hates Jews, Israel, America, and Whitey.
He lies so easily and so often it is troubling.
Based on his past & current associations, Barack Obama would never even qualify for a DOD Security Clearance; now he is Commander in Chief and fecklessly taking steps to disarm us in the sight of our enemies. Does that make you feel safe at night?

As I was traveling in Europe in 2009, a tour guilde in Pompeii began his address by saying, "In 1945, General Mark Clark led American troups onto the southern tip of Italy and began freeing the country from the tyranny of Mussolini." My father was a member of Clark's Fifth Army, serving in the 178th Field Artillery. I was moved to tears with pride in a father who gratefully served to preserve the nation he loved.

obama is the most anti-american, anti-military,anti-business person that has every been in the office of the president in my 64 years of life. i am a vietnam combat veteran and i didn't vote for him in the last election, and i certainly won't vote for him or any democrat in 2012. i would like to thank you and your staff for the great work that you do.

It is beyond comprehension that posting a prayer said by the President of the United States would be held objectionable. The political correctness has gone too far. The phrase "so help me God" has already been eliminated from the pledge made by President Roosevelt on the WWII memorial. The insignificant few in this country who are offended by the mention of God should not be given preference over the great majority who honor it.

As a direct answer to your question regarding whether our current President is fit to be the Commander in Chief of our armed forces, I must respond yes but in only one respect; he was chosen by the American people to assume that role.
The electorate has made numerous errors in judgement over the years though undoubtedly none so grave as this one. After three years of his "leadership" it is clear he is intent on fulfilling one particular campaign promise; to "fundamentally transorm" our Republic. And his concept of our transformed nation would leave no trace of the principles of God-given Liberty enshrined by our Founders in the Constitution.
We who hold those principles dear must vow to do all we can to prevent his re-election.
In honor of those who have sacrificed so that we might enjoy the blessings of Liberty, let us live so as to reflect that we truly love Liberty more than life itself.
Happy 236 to all Marines. Semper Fidelis. Faithful to our God and our oath to the Constitution.

Great article on Veterans Day. I am appalled at the current leadership and their disgusting attitude for the military and their sacrifices to the country. This is a direct result of BO's disregard for the Constitution and the law of the land. Also his hatred of the conserative movement. first ever vote was for FDR. A lot of Presidents have served since then as Commander-in-Chief, but none ever such a poor example and unworthy of the title than Barack Hussein Obama, the Muslim who

I would also like to say Thank You for you service, to my son-in-law and daughter. Christopher Frost is a EOD wounded warrior who lost both legs below the knee. He is a Bronze Star winner and has made a huge sacrifice. He is currently serving at Andrews AF base in the Washington DC area. My daughter is an Iraq veteran and the two met when she had gotten pancreatic cancer and had surgery. They met at Walter Reed Army Medical Center during recovery. God Bless you all

It is not like a prayer of respect to those serving in WWII, a humble prayer in God's name uttered by our then Commander In Chief FDR, and honoring the goodness of our then social nature, is some kind of moral or ethical dilemma ... or is it?
By the way I think FDR wasn't on point with all he did, but - he had some truly tough issues to deal with during his presidency. He squared off face to face with the issues, acted like an American President who understood he was the leader of the USA, made choices, and didn't try to end-run around the representatives of the people. Very unlike the current blamer and apologizer in the OutHouse.

Captain Stephen Olney of Rhode Island Fifth Generation American, a soldier of the Revolution, fought with great distinction everywhere. wounded at least three times probably saved Monroes life. His company of light infantry under detached duty under Lafayette aided inthe encirclement of Cornwallis at Yorkpown. He led hevan at the famous atack at Redoubt10 with his Rhode Island company wqith unloaded weapons, ws first through the defenses amd was bauonetted more than once includingthrough the dgut. He survived. He recieved no gratitude by reason of Hamilton's selfish need for glory. Olney was a friend and comrad in arms of Lafayette (Members of the former named 1 st Rhode Island were not in Olney's Company)

My father-in-law, Emil Pruss served on Iwo Jima as a Marine. When asked how he was doing, he always responded "3 on the hill, 4 in the hole" As a veteran myself I have concluded this a comment coined on the island regarding the clearing of enemy combatants on the island. My warmest, heartfelt "thank you" goes out to all our military and their families, including my 4 sons and 3 grandsons who serve or have served. There is no greater mission than defending God and Country. I have great disdain for our "Commander in Chief", who not only hates the USA, but intends to destroy all it is and all it stands for. There are a great many people in this country who are still blind to what his intensions are. We need to wake these people up. If President Obama is re-elected, it will be the last presidental election in the United States. As much destruction as he has accomplished in 2 1/2 years, he will escalate this destruction at an amazing pace- until our freedom is replaced with tyrananical dictatorship.

I appreciate my father's service (Ron Walker). He was in a Destroyer engine room when his ship inspected Soviet freighters taking missles out of Cuba. His ship was the first to intercept the Soviet vessels at the peak of the CMC. Got his HD just before Nam started.
Also thankful for my father-in-law (the late Irvin Poucher). He served in the airforce during Nam, loading ordinance on attack aircraft. He lost friends during that war, but thankfully was not injured himself. Died in 2003 from brain cancer--we believe due to agent orange exposure. If true, then he gave his life for his country.

Would FDR's D-Day prayer dilute the memorial for the WWII soldiers, sailors and airmen? Absolutely not!!! This prayer was a vital part of that war. It helped many of this nation to prepare for the worst, but carry on to ensure the defeat of the Aryan destruction of so many. My son-in-law is currently serving in the U.S. Army
and has been deployed twice to the Middle East. He
is also proud of his service.
I participate in competitive shooting at Camp Perry
for the CMP and NRA competitions and have met with
and talked to many competitors in the military.
They also are proud of their service to their
country and are an example of what makes and pre-
serves this country as the greatest in the world.
On this Veterans Day all Americans should thank all
members of the U.S. military and pray they get home
to their families safe and sound.

I flew the A-6 Intruder in the late 80s and early 90s. Even though I am a commercial airline pilot now, I do my part in protecting freedom as a Federal Flight Deck Officer.
Congratulations on your son's appointment to the Naval Academy. My recommendation would be to accept that appointment, and continue the proud tradition of his Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. Thank you for your service. I know you are very proud of your son. I say that because I know how you feel. I have two sons attending West Point now. My oldest is a Firstie and my youngest is a Plebe. My contribution is on it's way.

Mr. Obama is the least qualified president this country has ever had, I believe. He has no experience and far too many ideals that are not in harmony with basic human rights, which are protected under the Constitution and Bill of Rights. He is who the founders were attempting to protect us against. And, there seems to be good reason to doubt that he should even legally be allowed to be our president, given the controversy about his origin of birth. After the first attempt to bankrupt our nation with his "bailouts" he should have been impeached, if he hadn't already been imprisoned for impersonating an American cititzen and obtaining his office illegally. The only reason someone would want to run a country that they hate as much as Mr. Obama apparently does America, is to destroy it. He does sincerely plan to "fundamentally change America", but he wants to change it into something it was never intended to be by the founders, and that it's citizens should not tolerate. So, no, Barack Obama is NOT a fitting Commander in Chief.

My heroes enlisted in the Marine Corps right after Pearl Harbor was attacked and they participated in several landings in the Pacific. I was a baby when they enlisted and I didn't come to know them for over three years. They served in the grand tradition of the citizen soldier; they served voluntarily, fought bravely, came home, married, and raised families.
My brothers, John and Edward, are gone now, but they're still my heroes.

I am a veteran (US Army, during the Viet Nam era); my brother and one of my sisters served in the Navy; my father served during WWII; and both grandfathers served in WWI. None of us were career military, so I don't consider mine a "military family", but clearly we have a strong military connection. And I am as grateful as you for the men and women who are serving today, and will join you in honoring them on Veterans Day.
That said, I think you are grossly over-simplifying matters when you characterize people as being either "on the right side of Liberty" or "on the wrong side of history."
The men and women on the front (and support) lines are doing what they are told to do, and doing it very well given the restrictions placed on them. It is the senior commanders and, especially, the political leaders with whom I have a serious problem. Our military has grown unreasonably and unnecessarily huge, and we are expending enormous resources on ridiculous wars all over the globe. Almost none of those wars have anything to do with our "freedom", and few if any have a rational relationship to our national defense. What possible justification is there for us to have a significant miltary presence in over 38 foreign countries; to be "defending" Europe [according to the DoD, over 235 military sites in Germany alone!] half a century after the end of WWII and two decades since the collapse of the Soviet Union; to have huge fleets and ground forces in the Pacific protecting Japan and Korea, both of whom could certainly handle it themselves; to remain in the Middle East a decade after removing Hussein from power. The list of our foreign military adventures is nearly endless, and endlessly depressing.
When we remember the sacrifices of our military members on Veterans Day, it is appropriate to give some serious thought to the causes for which many of them gave their lives or limbs. Frankly, and especially in these last few decades, those causes weren't worth the cost. The United States must stop searching the world for monsters to slay, and stop viewing itself as the world's policeman. An argument can be made that such was necessary during the Cold War, but no such argument can honestly be made today. The strain on our forces, and especially the reserves and state militias, has become unbearable. And we certainly can no longer afford it, in purely monetary terms.
We need to bring 90% of our troops home, withdraw from NATO and other such alliances (including United Nations "peacekeeping" efforts), and transform our military into a truly defensive force. Its only job is to protect the nation, but we have long lost sight of that and turned it into an instrument of empire. With a properly structured and defensive-oriented military force I believe we could substantially reduce "defense" spending (those sneer quotes are because so little of it is actually spent on defense) while improving the actual security of the nation. And, as a side benefit, possibly reducing some of the enmity our heavy-handed presence causes in many parts of the world.
This is not a criticism of our servicemen, but of our leadership. I fimly believe that we could cut military spending in half, and probably much more than that, with no risk whatsoever to our national defense. And given the dire straits into which our economy has fallen that's a discussion which we should be having right now.

My uncle served in the 82nd Airborne from North Africa through Salerno, 3 combat airdrops, 3 Bronze Stars. But it is now time to bring troops home from Germany! Over 50,000. Over 40,000 in Japan, 30,000 plus in Korea. These countries can all take care of them selves today! We only need liaison groups of 5,000 or less in each country now. Our great and proud military is overworked and spread to thin. Half the money saved should be offset by tax cuts to boost the economy, the rest saved to reduce the deficit. Put all that don't want to retire/separate on the southern borders till Mexico gets right.

As a 'nam days (1963-1967) Air Force Veteran, I'm disgusted with "the present occupant of the White House", (he doesn't deserve the title of C.I.C., far better men have held that position), and he's a fraud. My one past Grandfather fought in the Revolutionary War, his son fought in the Civil War, thus I was able to prove acceptance and be inducted as a Compatriot of the Sons of the American Revolution. Obama has yet to show any grace to our military, which leads me to an addition to the requirements for POTUS, "a minimum amount of time in the military". I had to show my High School Diploma, my Driver's license, my Social Security card, and my Birth Certificate to prove that I'm a citizen who is a patriot! Obama has hidden everything, so he has NO business in office.
I lost a childhood friend in Vietnam, a fine younger man who was faithful to OUR flag and country, right alongside thousands of other soldiers who were KIA and horribly wounded.
The best that Obama could do is to admit his misdeeds, his lack of genuine citizenship, then resign for the betterment of America!
Enough of a Moslem Commie-lover, who is against the Second Amendment.

One of my clients is a WWI vet. I stand in awe of what he went through, concentration, depravation, etc, as he was one of only 500 survivors of Cabanatuan [the death march camp] in the Philippines. I don't believe that the average American has any feel at all for what the men and women in armed services truly experience. God bless them for their commitment. And NO, BHO is not a fit CIC! He represents nothing that this country was founded upon nor must get back to in order to preserve our nation. He shouldn't have been elected, he shouldn't be in office, and his presaence if re-elected will definitely ensure the demise of the USA.

This is a poem that was written back in the 80s in Lakewood CA. The VET who wrote it his name was Dennis Lander.
The poem is on a bronze plaque beneath an F86 Saber.
The pilot of this jet was a Lakewood resident and was killed over in NAM.
Read it once, read twice and think about what it says then talk to your kids about it.

It is very clear the time has come to elect a new CIC. It is incomprehensible to conclude the plaque would "dilute" the WWII Memorial or be an intrusion. FDR's message was for those who would fight to liberate all of Europe from tyranny in the largest invasion of all time. It is also time for Mr. Abbey to hit the road based on his outrageous decision.

This is for my father and his twin brother who both ran from their mother's arms to catch a troop train headed for Army recuritment center at the begining of WWII. My dad wound up in the Phillipines and my uncle wound up chasing Hitler and his minions in Germany. Both returned safely to lead productive lives and families. God bless all our veterans today and always.

My father went into Normandy on that June 6th, as a member of the 29th Division Corps of Engineers. He's gone now, but, I can hear in my mind what his words would be concerning our current "leadership" in the White House. They are not printable!
I'm not sure of the origination of the saying, but, the words "All gave some, some gave all" pretty much sum up what we owe in respect and gratitude to our military people past present and future. Thank you ALL!

What would you call a retired full-bird Army Colonel with a 33 year career, veteran of WW-II, Korea, and Viet Nam, medals include the Silver Star, three Legions of Merit, four Bronze Stars (one with a V for valor); five Air Medals and many different commendation medals, Combat Infantryman’s Badge with a star (two awards), two purple hearts, and he’s also the last surviving member of the Cuban Missile Task Force?
I call him Chuck and I sit next to him in my little church choir. How lucky am I?

I would like to give thanks to my Dad, who served in Vietnam, and all of his brothers who served with him. They suffered cruelly in that war both physically and psycologically, and received little to no thanks at that time for their service.
I know Dad had several near death experiences and saw some horrible things during his time there, and has had to carry that weight ever since. I just want to let you know Dad, from one soldier to another, as long as you're with me you'll never have to carry to carry that weight alone.
May the Lord Jesus bless ALL of our brave troops, past, present, and future, and may we the people of the United States strive to be worthy of their service and sacrifice.

My brother,Bernie R. Murrey, was a Chief Petty Officer who served in Korea and Viet Nam on air craft carriers. He wrote a book on calculus and trig for the Navy. He died in a house fire in Sepember 2010. He was my hero.

My late father, Frederick G. Brickman, enlisted in the Navy at 17, and served honorably as a Petty Officer aboard a destroyer from the Coral Sea to the Phillipines to the surrender of Japan.
His two brothers, Robert Brickman and Lloyd Brickman served as Army Infantry officers in Europe from Italy to the surender of Germany.
And my uncle, Francis "Bud" Schmillen was an Army Infantry NCO KIA in the Phillipines.
I owe them the freedoms my children and I enjoy today.
Those who wish to honor our veterans honor them best by preserving the Republic they've all defended, and by supporting the Constitution those in uniform still defend today.

I'm nearly 82 y/old and remember WWll much too well! I lived in So. California during Nam and for many months my home was open to a lot of Marines that had passed training at Camp Pendelton. I never knew when I got up an Sat. morning how many there would be, wall to wall! Usually the smell of fresh coffee was what woke me. Of my four children my oldest was 14 years and at first I worried for her safety, after all they were from all over the USA and getting ready to ship out! I soon learned that neither they nor anyone else could touch her if "my Marines" were with her! She wa their "little sister"!
I learned, from an Officer, sent to my home, because one of "my Marines" had requested that I be notified if he didn't make it home. I had learned that this Marine had had a "falling out" with his family in Wash. State when he enlisted. I sincerely regret that I had never had any of "my Marines" leave their names or where I could contact them when they returned or even write to them.
This is the first place that I have found to honor "my Marines" and thank them for all that they have done for us/me and my family.
Many years later three of my four, two boys and one daughter joined the Navy. My oldest daughter was already married. I know that there were many prayers from many sources that helped them to return home safely when their tour of duty was completed safely. Not one of them saw cambat.
This is what our Great Country stands for. May her falg proudly wave for ever!
Thank each and every one that served or made the life of someone that has served just a little better!

My Grandfather, Loren C. Veidt, who served his country in both WWI in an artillery company, and WWII.
Finally, my great uncle, Pfc William Snavely, who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life for his country in WWI in the trenches of France.
I honor their service and sacrifice for the freedoms my family and I enjoy today, and will always be thankful.

FDR's prayer on a plaque would in no way, shape or form Dilute the elegant message but Complete it as it was said by FDR and the people that heard it and said it along with FDR. It should Already be in place.
The biggest problem this country has is if Obama remains in office. Let's get a president in office that will not hesitate to CORRECT all the things that Obama has done to this once great country.

Robinson (Aleutians), and Charles D. Robinson (8th AAF). Cousins who served include Laron Robinson (USA, FRG), Larry Robinson (USN), Robert Cox (USA, RVN), and Douglas Cox (USA,Retired). I retired after 20 years that saw me rise from a slick-sleeve private to a captain of armored troops. Most of the older generation Roll Call together, again."

My grandson, Troy Verley, is on a 2 week leave from Kuwait, where he is serving escorting troops and supplies out of Iraq to ships in Kuwait. This is his third tour... just married a nurse in St. Cloud, MN .. and now is "itching" to return to duty. A member of the Minnesota National Guard, he proudly serves his country in its war against terrorists and extremists in Iraq. I am proud of him and his desire to stand in the gap against evil here and there.

I would not have enlisted in the Army in 1968 if a moron like obammy was in office, I served and have 2 Honorable discharges I look at the wall in front of my computer table and look at my Fathers flag from start to finish in the Pacific and the Aleutians He never once mentioned his service awards I never knew until his funeral all the medals he recieved I cried when I read them aloud to the family he like I would never have served under obammy, God please Bless America!

by a female suicide bomber, to many awards to list, and protector of all veterans from every walk of life, creed, branch of service, and a selfless individual that is a crucial supporter of wounded warriors and combat vets, including myself.
CW2 Aaron George, 82nd Airborne Infantry, 3 combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, and 1 humanitarian mission. Also wounded in combat, he is the most selfless individual I have ever known, who taught me the saying "In Vino Veritas". I will always have these brothers for the rest of my life. In honor of my father, L/C Donald C. Dishon, USAAC/USAF 1943-1975, who flew P-51's in Korea until he was shot down, spending two years as a guest of the Chinese in N. Korea. When repatriated he weighed less than 100 pounds, more than 75 pounds less than his normal weight. After he returned and married his sweetheart he continued his service to our country as "The World's Greatest Fighter Pilot" until retirement.
I still miss him every day, but am happy he doesn't have to endure the degradation of Obama.

My family has been providing warriors for this nation for many generations. I am a veteran, 36 years in the Army, and my sons have picked up the torch and are carrying it proudly--one Marine, one Army. Both grandfathers fought in naval battles in World War I and II, and both retired at flag rank. My father retired from the Navy after serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Uncles, brothers, cousins have all served in the various branches, Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps. Great-Grandfathers, Great Uncles, some of them famous names, have all proudly worn the uniforms of Defenders of Freedom.
I could not be more proud than to be a part of this long line of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines. My thanks to all who went before me, and to those come after me.

Tomorrow is day to honor all the brave men and women that currently serve in our Armed Forces and to those who have made the ultimate sacrafice in defending our country or fighting for another country's people to be free.

I have been struggling for some time with the notion that it is the DUTY of a commander's subordinates, to relieve of command one who is derelict in his duties, and in fact in this case, subversive to the liberty of Americans. I realize it is a very serious crime to "mutiny" if a court doesn't agree with such actions, and with the SCOTUS being in cadence with POTUS, the risk is even higher. With that though, I believe it was "Publius" that noted collaboration between the executive branch and the supreme court would mean the end of liberty. It may be time for a call to arms.

On the day FDR uttered his prayer I, as one of eighty two replacement P38 pilots for the 15th Air Force in Italy, was on a troop transport on the way to the port of Oran in North Africa. God let me live but only seventeen of us came back home. I had a cousin on my father's side and another on my mothers side who were also fighter pilots. Neither of them survived. I would have the prayer on the Memorial. And I would have Obama get what he deserves - which is certainly not anything good. May God preserve our country.

Veteran's Day is always a bit of a dichotomy for me, although not as to the celebration of our heroes. There is a proper emphasis on those who lost their lives, and those who were at the front but came back. But there is often a "piggy-backing" by the Fort Dix soldiers.
Not to suggest that a willingness to serve is less than those who were at the front, just that those of us who are not of "the society of them who've been shot at" should be saluting the members of that society as well as the civilians.
My father was not a veteran, but volunteered for flight training in the RCAF in WWI. The war ended before he was taken, and given the two weeks flight training then to the front - and the high losses of rookies at the front - I'm glad the war ended when it did (else I'd likely not be here).
I served over three years as a seagoing officer in the Navy (destroyer duty) even though I was 4F (faked my physical). No one shot at me, but the Atlantic Ocean in winter took her best try. The Merchant Marine of WWII, I had a late friend on the Murmansk run as a Navy gunner (Navy pay, Merchie danger).
There have been many over the years who have either risked their lives, or been willing to risk them, for the cause we all support - the freedom of our nations and peoples to be themselves. I remember meeting a man in England in 1947, at a local pub (although being 12 I could share a beer with him). He was barely taller than I, and I asked what he had done during the war. He told me he was a "King's Courier". I thought he was delivering messages to Parliament - then someone told me he had parachuted five times into occupied France to deliver messages, and worked his way back to the coast by land for pickup.
It is not only those in the military who are officially veterans that we should honor, it is also the many who served in so many ways without a uniform.

Thanks for the recognition of Veterans. It frustrates me that military service is unappreciated and promised benefits continually wind up on the chopping block. Most of my family, and my spouse's family, are veterans. I served 20 years on active duty; my spouse served 23 actvive/reserves. Both our fathers were career military (WWII and Vietnam). My mother-in-law was a WWII Navy Wave; my uncle went to war in WW II and served the rest of his 30 years in the Reserves. My sister served four years; her husband served 20. My brother-in-law is winding up 30 years of active and reserve service. My two nephews are active duty Navy - one is an EOD specialist (EOD = blow you up) who has earned four bronze stars. (And is still alive). I have heard proposals to convert military retirements to 401k plans, like civilians have. My answer: send every member of Congress to do the job our active duty folks do - just for a week! - and then ask them if they think military benefits are generous.

A blessed thanks to Richard Stoll, USAF who served in northern Japan at a listening post in the Vietnam era. To me he epitomizes the citizen our founders envisioned with 4 years of service in military uniform and 35 years of non-uniform service through Scouting. He loves shooting sports and is an expert level marksman. He has introduced hundreds of young men about weapons and marksmanship. I am just honored to be able to call him friend.
May God set a place at His table for all those who are willing to kill and be killed so I do not have to to live free. Further, praise Him for giving us such men and women filling to stand in my stead.
Many think this country is too far gone morally. Seek solace in the example laid before us in those volunteers who defend us now, even in times like these.

The inclusion of FDR's prayer would only enhance the memorial, in my opinion. AS a retired Coast Guard Warrant Officer, I know that our military men and women are glad to hear their leaders pray for their safety before dangerous deployments. As they say " There are not athiests in a fox hole".

First thank you for all you do for Americans in and out of Uniform. I myself am a retired US Army Captain, and former Marine. At present I work for a transportation company which operates in all 50 states including Canada.
What concerns me is that we operate in Washington DC and bring students, vets etc. to visit the Memorials to those who serve and have served
The transportation we provide is under attack by the City Fathers there and needs to be brought to light. Soon No bus transportation will be allowed by private companies which over the years has brought millions of passangers and dollars to this great city.
Though it is not my business, I have written letters to Congress, DOT, including Obama, Not one has returned a comment.
The only reason I write is that I believe it our right to bring visitors to DC and not be singled out by lies and retoric regarding this mode of transportation and cost associated with it allowing bus traffic in DC, especially in and around the Mall, Capital etc.
An example of what I am talking about is at the WWll memorial it now says bus drop off only? It used to say dropoff/pickup. We cannot wait or pickup the groups there without a policeman telling us to leave or writing tickets. Areas that we used to have to park are now for automobiles only or Permit Parking? Why? They say there is enough parking for 100 buses at RFK Stadium? Where are the other 1000 buses operating in DC going to park or hide in DC on a daily basis? Truth is even along the mall no buses are allowed to stop anymore...what is wrong in America

This was, and is, a very special day in our family. My father and mother both served in the Army in WWI - dad was a Supply Sergeant in France and mom was an Army Nurse (Lt.) in Virginia. We used to tease her saying she ordered dad to marry her. My brother was in the Air Corps in WWII. I was in the Air Force for over 20 years - flew F-86s and F-101s and was a FAC in Vietnam (OV-10). My son
is an AF Academy grad, retired now.

I'm proud to be a vet of the Vietnam War. It's hard to ignore the actions our government shows it's vets. After WWII left without housing. After Korea leaving over 2,000 POW's to be used as lab rats or in slavery the rest of their life. Using the Gulf of Tonkin lie to end the life's of 58,000 of my friends and loosing a war we already won. Giving Desert Storm troops gas mask we were issued in the 60's to march into a chemical and biological waste dump. For the last 12 years waging a barbaric, murderous war on innocents causing great numbers of vets committing suicide trying to deal with these tactics. Agent Orange, Gulf Syndrome, cutting disabled vets benefits rather than cut any of the over 2,000 government agencies.
Heads up! don't let the actions of a few criminals get in the way of the respect and admiration of the American people.
