Profiles of Valor: U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Edward Albietz

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Having served as the leader of a bomb-disposal team at Kirkuk Regional Air Base in Iraq, Air Force Staff Sgt. Edward Albietz of Pinellas Park, Florida, is accustomed to putting his life on the line daily. The father of two young children, Albietz served with the Air Force for eight years and was stationed in the Middle East up until late 2006.

While in Iraq, Albietz was responsible for the discovery and disarming of explosive devices located within a 16,000-square-mile area. During one mission in Sulayman Bak, Albietz's team had to find and deactivate four pressure-switch-activated explosives that were planted around government buildings. The team was successful in its mission, and countless military and civilian lives were saved as a result of their efforts.

Other missions have involved dismantling explosives while under insurgent attack. In all, Albietz is credited with destroying more than 40,000 bombs that resulted in saving innumerable lives. For his courageous efforts in Iraq, he was recently awarded the Bronze Star for "exceptionally meritorious conduct."

Well Done, Sir

Yes, it was your duty, but Thank God you were willing to do that duty.

A grateful citizen salutes you.

As a military member, I appreciate the attention that Patriot Post has given to servicemen. I agree with what each of them would say: "I'm just doing my duty." While many would not articulate that they are public servants, their spirit is exactly that. Please don't stop these excellent reminders that there are citizen-soldiers committed to serving each other and defending our Constitution..

I would request an addition to this feature. How about Citizens of Valor? Those who have a clear view of the role of government and their duty as handed down by the founders; those who have perhaps sacrificed their lives in the cause of freedom, becoming disparaged and ridiculed for being solid in their principles and maybe even losing their "career" as a public servant for those convictions. I'm sure there are plenty that have been persecuted for doing the right thing--many of them are probably Patriot Post subscribers and ALL OF THEM are equally Patriots of the first order along with our uniformed Patriots of Valor!
