Sacred Honor: Our Oath to Support and Defend

By Mark Alexander · Nov. 14, 2008

In 1776, an extraordinary group of men signed a document that affirmed their God-given right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” as “endowed by their Creator.” By attaching their signatures to our great Declaration of Independence, they, in effect, were signing their death warrants in defense of Essential Liberty.

Indeed, the last line of our Declaration reads, “For the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.”

Many of these men, and many of their countrymen, the first generation of American Patriot, would die fighting for American liberty.

A decade later, their liberty having been won at great cost, our Founders further codified their independence and interdependence by instituting yet another historic document, our Constitution.

Our Constitution, as written and ratified, stipulates in its preface that it is “ordained and established” by the people to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.” To that end, it established a Republic, not a popular democracy, which is to say it affirmed the primacy of Rule of Law over rule of men.

Accordingly, the first order of business for those elected to national office is that they be bound by oath to “preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution under which they were duly elected.

For those elected to the presidency, Article II, Section 1, which specifies: Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Likewise Article VI, clause three specifies: The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution…

Commissioned and enlisted military personnel are also required by statute to “solemnly swear, that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same…”, though the officer's oath doesn't include any provision that they obey orders.

Against all enemies, foreign and domestic…

Notably, all these oaths mandate the preservation, protection, support and defense of our Constitution as ratified, not the so-called “living constitution” as amended by judicial activists populating what Thomas Jefferson predicted would become “the despotic branch.”

While uniformed Americans serving our nation defend our Constitution with their lives, most elected officials debase it with all manner of extra-constitutional empowerment of the central government, not the least of which is the forced redistribution of income to benefit their constituency groups which, in turn, dutifully re-elect them.

Military service personnel who violate the Constitution are remanded for courts-martial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, while politicians who violate the Constitution are remanded for – re-election.

On that note, “Barack Hussein Obama” and his Leftist NeoCom cadres have made a greater mockery of our Constitution than any administration in history. Clearly, Obama and his ilk have no history of honoring, or intention to honor their oaths and, in fact, have no context for such honor. The are intent on “fundamentally transforming the United States of America.”

Some liberals who believe themselves to be “patriots” have asked, “Can't I be a bona fide Patriot and support Barack Obama?”

In a word … NO, unless in a state of solemn repentance.

In the spirit of charity, perhaps Obama supporters, who self-identify as patriots, are just grossly misinformed about our Constitution, our history and their own civic duty. Of course, they would likewise be grossly deluded about their identity, but perhaps the delusion is temporary.

I would suggest that Obama “patriots” are nothing more than “sunshine patriots,” as Thomas Paine wrote, who “will in crisis, shrink from the service of his country.”

At its core, the word “patriot” has direct lineage to those who fought for American independence and established our constitutional republic. That lineage has descended most directly through our history with those who have been entrusted “to support and defend” our Constitution – more specifically, those who have been faithful to, and have abided by, that oath. As previously noted, by “our Constitution,” I am referring to the United States Constitution, not the adulterated vestigial remains that liberals call “the living constitution.”

I have taken oaths nine times in the service of my community, my state and my country. But I did not have to take an oath to understand my obligations as a citizen “to support and defend” our Constitution.

So, does the title of “Patriot” apply to an individual who votes for a man who has not honored his public oaths of office previously, and has given no indication he intends to “bear true faith and allegiance to the same” as president – a man who subscribes to the errant notion of a “living constitution” which, in his own words, “breaks free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution”?

No authentic Patriot would support those who violate their sacred oaths.

Unfortunately, in this most recent election, we saw even a handful of flag-rank military officers who have no more reverence for their oaths than Obama. However, they are the exception, not the rule.

Obama's mantra, “change,” is a euphemism for constitutional abrogation – an incremental encroachment on liberty until, at last, liberty is lost.

Our nation's second president, John Adams, warned, “A Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.”

As for Obama's deception about his own patriotic pedigree, I commend the words of our nation's first president, George Washington: “Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism. …[W]here is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation deserts the oaths…?”

Regarding the Presidential Oath of Office, Justice Joseph Story wrote: “[T]he duty imposed upon him to take care, that the laws be faithfully executed, follows out the strong injunctions of his oath of office, that he will 'preserve, protect, and defend the constitution.' The great object of the executive department is to accomplish this purpose.” He wrote further that if the president does not honor his oath, his office “will be utterly worthless for … the protection of rights; for the happiness, or good order, or safety of the people.”

Of course, Barack Obama proposes to further constrain the rights of the people by advancing centralized government control by way of economic regulation and forced income redistribution, all in the name of “happiness, good order, and safety of the people,” but in direct violation of his oath.

Some have suggested that since the election is over and Obama is the victor, we should accord him the honor due his office. But if he does not honor his constitutional oath, why would anyone extend him the honor of its highest constitutional office? Indeed, anyone having take that oath would be in direct violation of its mandate to “support and defend THE Constitution” should they support extra-Constitutional orders from superiors who do not honor their sacred oath.

I will be 69 years old my next birthday and I am a Christian, conservative republican in that order. I have seen many presidents and administrations come and go I have no respect for the current one. I was taught, early on, to love my country, respect and defend the constitution and the office of the president of the United States of American. I was not taught to respect the person occupying the office, which I do not!

In my lifetime (78+) years there were two visual scenes I will never forget; the last helicopter out of Saigon, circa 1975; and the members of the U.S. Senate in the well of that chamber, lining up to pledge impartiality in the trial of Bill Clinton after he was impeached by the House of Representatives circa 1998-99. I believe the dishonorable foreign policy and domestic policy actions of our elected Congress were on full display then. Recent events show that nothing has changed! Oh the shame. November 2010 can't get here soon enough.

I will defend my country and fellow citizens from any threat be it our own government or people. The time is growing near for segregation from the laws that have governed our nation into the condition we have become. This Obama is no president in my eyes, and though he has been elected because of do proses, I have no respect nor honor to him or this present government of thieves and liars. I have worked hard my entire life as a blue collard man, take pride in providing to our system if the system is fare, but they have crossed the line at this time telling me I MUST GIVE THEM MY HARD EARNED DOLLARS for a bunch of people that set on there asses and spend my money for me. I stood in line at my local grocers a few months ago with my rice, potatoes and three day old chicken that was on Manager special price, as I was behind a black woman with steaks, piled high, pre made meals, shrimp, ice-cream, and several other what I consider luxuries, her entire cart filled to the point she couldn't fit another item, and now mind you her hair was perfect, gold chains, finger nails well manicured, well dressed, and probably had a nice car in the parking lot, and dam if she didn't pull out an independence card (free government food card) and payed for her groceries. Well I had to say something and I am glad I did, I said " Your welcome", well she began to call me a honkey red neck piece of shit. My response was clear and direct and non racial as I rebutted and said " I just payed $640.00 dollars in federal taxes in the past two weeks which pays for your meals, so your welcome. Makes me sick that I work and my children don't eat as well as the ones that don't. My time has come. A dying AmericanAndrew Eifert

The Faithful oath of office...Well he sure as snow is NOT faithfully upholding nor preserving the Constitution! To say in some oft handed way, "...the Constitution doesnt allow me to do that..." when talking about becoming involved in a huge undertaking in government takeover of somesort or another. The fact he has already overstepped the bounds of the office of Premier..er I mean President is telling enough! He has committed already impeachable offenses and needs to be removed from that place of authority.

Patrick Henry was the most faithful patriot of the founding era and he fought against ratification of the Constitution with all of his being. Along with other anti-Federalists he recognized that we would end up exactly where we are today with the proposed government. Here's what he said in the Virginia Ratifying Convention about the Empire being proposed:"The American spirit has fled from hence: it has gone to regions where it has never been expected; it has gone to the people of France, in search of a splendid government — a strong, energetic government. What can make an adequate satisfaction to them for the loss they have suffered in attaining such a government — for the loss of their liberty? If we admit this consolidated government, it will be because we like a great, splendid one. Some way or other we must be a great and mighty empire; we must have an army, and a navy, and a number of things.""We drew the spirit of liberty from our British ancestors: by that spirit we have triumphed over every difficulty. But now, sir, the American spirit, assisted by the ropes and chains of consolidation, is about to convert this country into a powerful and mighty empire" -- Patrick Henry.Over 200 years later, Presidential candidate Ron Paul raised some related points in the 2008 campaign. What justification does America have for maintaining at enormous expense 1,000 military bases overseas? Even our founding federalists (George Washington) advised against such foreign entanglements. How does America differ from the Roman Empire? Pax Romana -- Pax Americana? The United States Constitution defies God by making itself and its manmade laws "the supreme law of the land," thus casting out the law of God in the Bible (Art. VI, Sec. 1). We are like Israel in her rebellion against God in I Samuel 8, which was centered on the desire for a king who “may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” Patrick Henry saw this clearly.Should we be joining the volunteer army to support and defend a nation that consciously broke covenant with God in 1787? There is an oath required of every new recruit to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, the very document by which America broke covenant with God. How can a Christian in good conscience volunteer to take this oath of rebellion? Ignorance alone. Those who think they are enlisting to follow in the footsteps of George Washington's Revolutionary Army of patriots should think more carefully. Washington fought against the despotic mercantilism of the British Empire with its freedom-crushing taxes, tariffs and trade restrictions.America has long since (1865) been recaptured by a virulent form of that very mercantilism with tyranny 100-fold or 1000-fold as great as Britain ever was. It has spread its tentacles everywhere with 1,000 military bases worldwide. Those who enlist to support this regime are playing the part of the British Redcoats during the American Revolution. What but blind patriotism can keep a Christian from grasping this reality. More details are here: http://www.america-betrayed-1787.com/volunteer-army.html

Having just reread General Mc Arthur's Farewell Speech at West Point fo rthe third time I'm left to wonder where they all went those people who knew and lived by the words Duty, Honor Country. My family has had members who fought in all wars from the Civil War on and did so with a feeling of pride in their service to this wonderful country which offers so much to it's citizens. I to wonder what happened in my life time where when going to school I was thught our history which include all wars from the French Indian on. Amoung the subject taught were alos the Constitution, a document which other nations are evnious of and at the same time feasrful of because it recognizes the rights of the individual. Perhaps this is why so many come to this country, Our way iof life offers them the opportunities they could never have in their native lands. Now however this document and our very way of life is under attack from within and it seem trher is no way to prevent it. Look at the people in elected office or running for an elected office. I truly believe there is not an honest man or patriot amoung them. Their true platform has only three planks Lie, Cheat and Steal. Lie to get into office , Cheat while in office and Steal all you can from you country while in office. You have a president who disregards the Constitution a Congress who gives a standing ovation to a foreign head of state (President of Mexico) who castigates our country for trying to enforce it's laws on immigration because it would interfere in his countrys illegal immigration to this country. However, his own country is in reality a failed state run by drug trafficking organizations who terrorizs and murder it's own citizens and the government cannot protect them.

If a President swears to the Oath of Office and then does absolutely the opposite of that Oath, it would seem to me that would be grounds for impeachment and immediate removal of an 'unfaithful', lying traitor to this country and all that it stands for. But then we live in a very 'liberal' society and must 'give him a long leash that will eventually pull us all down into the depths of 'Socialism & Communism' under the guize of a 'living constitution'? Apologies must be made to all who have faught and died for our freedoms, because we have allowed this heretic and his cronies to defile our National Heritage of Freedom & Justice.

Let us remember that very few presidents EVER could pass the test of upholding their oath to the Constitution. NOT A SINGLE PRESIDENT in the past 100 years, Republicrat or Demipublican, ever upheld their oath as they are constitutional required. Especially after Linclon made it almost fashionable to violate the Constitution on a whim, if you can justify an emergency. Even before that time it was spotty a best to find one that held true to the oath. The same applies to the the Courts and Congress. The oath does not give any exception to situation. It does not give exception to the "opinion" or political agenda of the official. It doesn't give exception to ingnorance of the Constitution or expected duties. The oath doesn't care about "good intentions". It is no shade of grey whatsoever! It is black and white as it gets! "To the best of my abilities..." is regardless of circumstance. If any official knowilgy CHOSE an unConstitutional action, or signed off on unConstitutional law, THEY MADE A WILLFUL CHOICE TO ACT CRIMINALLY AGAINST OUR REPUBLIC & CONSTITUTION, AND THEIR OWN OATH OF OFFICE.
