I had two takeaways from the face-off between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris this week.
First, Trump seemed typically unprepared and unfocused. He treated this debate as if he were in front of a stadium of his fans, where everything he says is received with applause. What he needed to do, and will need to do in the next debate if they agree on one, is repeatedly hammer home the colossal failures of the Harris/Biden administration, turning every question back to the economy, border security, crime, and national security.
Unfortunately, he did what he is predisposed to do: He spent his time taking Harris’s bait-line lies, going on defense to ineffectively refute Harris’s claims rather than going on offense and taking her out.
As for Harris, she did not have to go on defense because the moderators were doing that for her, fact-checking Trump’s bravado while giving Harris a free pass on a plethora of lies she spewed.
The most important thing we learned about the real Kamala Harris: She has mastered the art of the BIG Lie from Joe Biden over the last four years, and she is fully prepared to take over his role leading the Demos’ lying dog-faced pony soldier cavalry.
Harris claimed: “I’m going to tell you all, in this debate tonight, you’re going to hear from the same old, tired playbook, a bunch of lies, grievances and name-calling. … Well, as I said, you’re going to hear a bunch of lies. … Don’t lie. … I said it at the beginning of this debate, you’re going to hear a bunch of lies…”
And she was right…
What follows are some of the more egregious Harris lies (some paraphrased and some directly quoted) the ABC moderators allowed to stand during the debate.
On the economy…
Notably, the ABC moderator opened the debate by asking Harris, “Do you believe Americans are better off than they were four years ago?” Harris masterfully dodged the question, but the answer is, if you are better off than you were four years ago, you are probably one of the 10-15 million illegal immigrants “Border Czar” Harris allowed to enter our country.
Harris: Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression.
Fact: In January 2021, unemployment was 6.4% lower than the 10% it hit under Barack Obama, and that was the result of the ChiCom Virus pandemic, not Trump’s economic policies.
Harris: “My opponent, on the other hand — his plan is to do what he has done before, which is to provide a tax cut for billionaires and big corporations, which will result in $5 trillion to America’s deficit.”
Fact: Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act gave the 82% of middle-income earners a tax cut. IRS data as reported by The Hill, indicates that ‘on average all income brackets benefited substantially from the Republicans’ tax reform law, with the biggest beneficiaries being working and middle-income filers, not the top 1 percent.“
Harris: Trump wants a 20% sales tax.
Fact: He does not support a sales tax but has proposed tariffs on foreign countries that put high tariffs on U.S.-made products.
Trump: In his typically careless hyperbole, he said we had "no inflation” when he was president.
Fact: At this point in Trump’s presidency, overall prices had risen 6%, while under the Biden/Harris regime, prices have risen more than 20% and much higher on some consumer market basics.
Harris: I grew up a “middle-class kid.”
Fact: Her father was a Marxist professor at Stanford University, and her mother was a biomedical scientist at UC Berkley. Their combined income was not “middle class.”
Military and Border Security…
Let me preface this section by noting the most significant factor disqualifying Harris to ever serve as commander-in-chief is her selection of Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. His long record of stolen valor and other career embellishments are well documented. Trump made almost no mention of Walz, apparently leaving that issue for the VP debate with JD Vance.
Harris: Trump “negotiated the weakest deal ever with Afghanistan.”
Fact: Biden and Harris discarded the Trump negotiations and are directly responsible for the disastrous and deadly surrender and retreat from Afghanistan. Their abject ineptitude then empowered Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and Iranian surrogate attacks on Israel.
Harris: There are no U.S. active-duty troops in any combat zone anywhere around the world for the first time this century.
Fact: Shouldn’t a potential commander-in-chief know this? DoD designates that the U.S. is currently engaged in active war zones, including Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Libya. Three American military personnel were killed recently in Syria, but apparently Harris, as with the 13 American service personnel killed in Afghanistan, does not count those.
Harris: Trump has disparaged our fallen troops, a reference to the false claim that Trump, at Normandy, called deceased World War I Marines “suckers & losers.”
Fact: Another complete fabrication that Biden and Harris continue to repeat.
Harris: Republicans were responsible for not passing a border security bill and, thus, are responsible for the flood of illegal immigrants.
Fact: This bill was a political setup that was structured not to pass because, as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said, in effect, it “codified Joe Biden’s open border.” But Republicans voting it down gave Harris an opening to blame Republicans for Demos’ deliberate open border policy, allowing a flood of illegals into our country.
Harris: Dictators want Trump to win.
Fact: That assertion is so laughable on its face that it is amazing Harris served it up. The Ukraine invasion was the direct result of Biden/Harris foreign policy ineptitude. Russia, China, and Iran were all in retreat when Trump was president.
Harris: “Donald Trump is weak and wrong on national security and foreign policy.”
Fact: Again, Russia, China, and Iran were all in retreat when Trump was president.
Harris the prosecutor against Trump the felony offender…
Harris: She brought up the various charges her Demo surrogates have brought against Trump.
Fact: Trump correctly noted, “Every one of those cases was started by them against their political opponents, and I’m winning most of them, and I’ll win the rest on appeal. It’s called weaponization. They weaponized the Justice Department.”
Harris: Another out-of-context assertion, “Understand that this is someone who has openly said he would terminate the Constitution of the United States.”
Fact: According to Trump, “The Fake News is actually trying to convince the American People that I said I wanted to ‘terminate’ the Constitution. This is simply more DISINFORMATION & LIES.”
Other lies that have been completely and repeatedly debunked, including by Leftmedia platforms…
Harris: Trump threatened a “bloodbath” if he is not elected in November.
Fact: Trump used the term “bloodbath” to describe the consequences for the U.S. auto industry if Harris is elected.
Harris: Trump called neo-Nazis in Charlottesville “really fine people.”
Fact: This lie has been fact-checked false by The Washington Post. Even the left-wing fact-checker Snopes calls this one bull pucky.
Harris: “Donald Trump left us the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War,” a reference to the J6 Capitol riot. “On that day, the president of the United States incited a violent mob to attack our nation’s Capitol, to desecrate our nation’s Capitol.”
Fact: Harris would benefit from a brief lesson on American history if she actually thinks that is true. What Trump actually said ahead of the riot: “I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” Trump offered Nancy Pelosi 10,000 National Guard troops to contain any riotous behavior, but Pelosi, who was responsible for Capitol security, refused.
Harris: Police officers died during the Capitol riot.
Fact: No police officers died during that riot or as a result of any injuries sustained in the riot.
Harris: Trump promised to be a dictator on day one.
Fact: This comment was sarcasm when bantering with Sean Hannity on Fox News.
Harris: “Nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion.” Fact: There are 21 states that allow abortion until the moment of birth.
Harris: “If Donald Trump were to be reelected, he will sign a national abortion ban.”
Fact: Trump has clearly said he opposes further national legislation on the issue and says, “It’s the vote of the people now.”
Trump: On taxpayer-funded “transgender” surgeries, Trump claimed, “Now she wants to do transgender operations on illegal aliens that are in prison.”
Fact: Harris has asserted, “I support policies ensuring that federal prisoners and detainees are able to obtain medically necessary care for gender transition, including surgical care, while incarcerated or detained. Transition treatment is a medical necessity, and I will direct all federal agencies responsible for providing essential medical care to deliver transition treatment.”
Harris: “What you’re going to hear tonight is a detailed and dangerous plan called Project 2025 that the former president intends on implementing if he were elected again.”
Fact: Trump responded, “I have nothing to do with Project 2025.” (I covered the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 controversy.)
Harris: “We’re not taking anybody’s guns away.”
Fact: Harris says, “We have to have a buyback program, and I support a mandatory gun buyback program.” Clearly, Harris would be one of the most anti-Second Amendment gun controllers in the history of our nation.
Finally…
Harris asserted: “I think it’s a tragedy that we have someone who wants to be president who has consistently over the course of his career attempted to use race to divide the American people. … And we don’t want this kind of approach that is just constantly trying to divide us, and especially by race. … We all have the same dreams and aspirations and want a president who invests in those, not in hate and division.”
Much as I began this column with Harris’s assertions about lies – all of which were applicable to herself, her rhetoric about “hate and division” is, likewise, wholly applicable to Harris and her leftist political cadres of hate hustlers. The Democrat Party is constructed on a foundation of hate and division.
Despite all the hand-wringing about Trump’s miserable debate performance, it is worth noting some relevant poling data. In 2016, after his first debate with Hillary Clinton, he trailed her by nine points but pulled off an Electoral College win. In 2020, after the first debate with Joe Biden, he trailed him by 10 points. Right now, after his first debate with Harris, he is trailing her nationally by 1.5 points.
From the moment the Democrats executed their previously scripted plan to replace Joe Biden with Harris as the Democrat presidential nominee, there was no question that Trump’s path to victory got much steeper.
That is the reality, and I hope Trump can find the discipline as a candidate in these final weeks to pull it off.
