ISIL Nears Retaking Mount Sinjar
“We broke the ISIL siege of Mount Sinjar, we helped vulnerable people reach safety, and we helped save many innocent lives,” Barack Obama declared in August, during the early days of his bombing campaign against ISIL. After a couple of months of Operation Inherent Resolve, however, we’re nearly right back where we started. “The Islamic State group has taken over two towns on Sinjar Mountain Monday, indicating that the Sunni militant group is advancing on territory that the U.S. had said that it had secured during its airstrikes on the region back in August,” reports the International Business Times. “U.S. officials warned months ago that if ISIS militants succeed in advancing this far, the Yazidi population could be at risk of ‘a potential genocide.’” The Yazidis are hoping for U.S. aid once again, so we’ll see how resolute the president really is.
