‘Some People Did Something’

House Republicans should make Speaker Pelosi defend the continued presence of Ilhan Omar.

The Democrats have a lot of nerve demanding that the GOP disown Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. I’m not saying Ms. Greene isn’t a screwball, but even a broken clock, as they say, is right twice a day. I’m not sure she has ever been right twice on the same day, but I certainly agree with her that the LGBTQ Pride flags should not be flown at U.S. embassies.

If Confederate flags are verboten, I see no reason why a flag that celebrates abnormal sex practices should be flown anywhere except possibly as wall coverings at same-sex marriages.

Instead of wasting their time defending Rep. Greene, House Republicans should make Speaker Pelosi defend the continued presence of Ilhan Omar. It was she who, in referring to the cataclysmic events of 9/11 dismissed it as “Some people did something.”

Ms. Omar continues to embarrass every person in Minnesota who isn’t an Islamic fanatic with her record of anti-Semitic remarks and the fact that she “married” her brother in order to sneak him into this country.

But Nancy Pelosi isn’t about to offend Muslim voters by banishing Omar and Rashida Tlaib. Besides with a tiny majority in the House, Pelosi wouldn’t dare move to evict Sirhan Sirhan, Charles Manson or Jeffrey Dahmer, so long as they had a (D) after their name.

Every so often, people write to let me know that the trouble with our politics is that we don’t have term limits for senators and representatives. That belief has never made sense to me. If the people in Burbank, California, keep electing a putz like Adam Schiff, what makes anyone think that if he were termed out, the voters would awaken as from a coma and vote for someone like Matt Gaetz or Jim Jordan? Obviously not. They would instead vote for a younger version of Schiff, someone like Eric Swalwell.

Another fantasy people share with me is the one about prohibiting lawyers from running for office. That one makes even less sense because the problem with lawyers being involved in politics isn’t that they’re lawyers, but that, rumors to the contrary, they are human beings.

I don’t care whether they’re replaced in the House and Senate by plumbers, accountants or traveling salesmen. Once you give people power over other people, you’re going to have problems. Let some people continue to get paid during a lockdown while others are at home praying for relief checks and you’re going to have problems. Let some people get their hair cut or go out for dinner or appear without masks in public, while the masses can’t do any of those things, and you’re going to have problems.

The fault always lies with the voters. The trouble is that most people aren’t any good at it. They don’t make the effort to stay on top of things. They’re like people who only get interested in baseball or football when the championship is on the line. They’ll watch the World Series with you and ask why a home run is sometimes worth one run, other times two, three or four. Watch the Super bowl with them and they’ll ask why a touchdown is worth six points and a field goal only three when the touchdown was made on a one-yard plunge by the quarterback while the field goal had to travel 55 yards in the air and then go between the goalposts.

So, we have tens of millions of voters who only come out of their four-year-long hibernations when the presidency is on the line. Even when the differences between the two candidates are as huge as they were last November, cheating aside, Biden received at least, say, 65 million votes because dumb people had heard that Trump was a racist, an anti-Semite, a chauvinist, a homophobe, an Islamophobe and, of course, hated immigrants, both legal as well as the other kind.

In a related matter, when John Dush wrote to ask me if it was true that in the past, members of Congress were allowed to bring guns onto the floor of their chamber, I replied: “I don’t know. But I imagine that in the good old days of the 19th century they could, back when men were men and women didn’t have the vote.”

I realize that my female readers might be offended by that remark, but so be it. The fact is that even after a century, most women simply haven’t gotten the hang of it. They tend to vote with their emotions. Even in my small circle, I know women who would vote for Republicans, but vote for Democrats because no issue is more important to them than easily- accessible abortions.

Lest the ladies think I am a misogynist, I have already announced that if it would mean that no other Jews would be allowed to vote, I’d give up my right to vote in a nano-second.

My favorite meme of the week came my way from Wesley Forgue. It showed Clark Kent in a telephone booth getting out of his work clothes but taking a moment to check the coin slot.

After writing about the old movies that we old folks get nostalgic about and wondering if the kids today will ever feel the same way about the comic book movies they have grown up watching, Adri Washburn wrote to say that music has suffered a similar decline.

I agreed, adding that if anything, the quality of music has declined even more.

“I hate to say it, but I feel it’s mainly the result of blacks taking over so much of the industry. There used to be talented black artists like Scott Joplin, Fats Waller, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louie Armstrong, Lionel Hampton and….I almost added Al Jolson.

But now you have your choice between obscene rappers and those over-hyped black women who can’t even sing the National Anthem without making it sound like the soundtrack to a porn film.

A friend of mine has a 67 year-old friend who lives in West Virginia. The friend wrote to report that "West Virginia, which is behind in most everything else, leads the nation in getting the vaccine out. I called to inquire and was called back in 20 minutes with appointments for both me and Neal. We drove to the high school, walked right in and got our shots. We waited 15 minutes to make sure we didn’t grow the extra head and went home. Our friends and neighbors had similar easypeasy experiences.”

Nobody should be too surprised that West Virginia has a Republican governor.

That brings us to a couple of recent surveys, one of which measured the unemployment rate in American cities and the other measured crime stats.

In the first, 17 of the cities in the worst economic shape had Democratic mayors, two had Independents and one, Fresno, a Republican.

When it came to violent crime, all 20 cities had Democrats at the helm. Detroit was at the top of both lists.

No doubt, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi would either write it off as coincidental or as disinformation.

I know that there are people who think that with the advent of political correctness, especially now that it has become militarized with the cancel-culturalists banishing honest people to the wilderness, we are all expected to bow down to the self-anointed victims and swear a loyalty oath to identity politics.

All I know is that it wasn’t that long ago that homosexuality was recognized by the psychiatrists of America as a psychological disorder. After a while, it was determined to be normal, that some people were “simply born that way.” Then, we reached a compromise with civil unions. But that was rather quickly replaced by same-sex marriages. Today, the producer of any movie or TV series that doesn’t have a homosexual included in the mix, invariably cast as a warm and witty best friend or next door neighbor, could be accused of committing a hate crime.

Now, with President Biden’s blessing, we see transgenders being accepted as normal. Now, personally, it doesn’t affect me if men get to compete in females sports or use the bathroom of their choice.

I’m merely here to report that only in a world gone mad would men marrying men, women marrying women and people denying biology and claiming on a whim to be male or female, be regarded as normal behavior.

My second favorite meme of the week came from Jerry Baldwin. It read “I just want to say one thing about coronavirus: This is the longest something made in China has ever lasted.”
