If only perp-walking a crooked former FBI director was as easy as renaming a Great Lake. If only.

While a quick check of Google Maps shows that the former Lake Ontario is now the gloriously renamed Lake America, a quick check of our prison system shows that Chris Wray is still a free man.

This is deeply unsatisfying to those of us who believe that Wray, during his eight years as FBI director, oversaw and continually provided air cover for an out-of-control bureau that had not only been weaponized against Donald Trump and his supporters but had also worked tirelessly "to neutralize all negative information and allegations of Biden family corruption."

Somewhat lost in all this, though, were the efforts of Wray’s bureau to go after everyday Americans. A peaceful pro-life Christian champion named Mark Houck comes immediately to mind, but there were plenty of others.

Indeed, under the direction of Trump’s exemplary Catholic predecessor and his corrupt DOJ hatchet man, the bureau produced its Richmond memo of January 23, 2023, which singled out and targeted “radical-traditionalist Catholic ideology,” whatever the heck that is.

All along, Wray dismissed the infamous memo as merely "a single product by a single field office, which, as soon as I found out about it, I was aghast and ordered it withdrawn and removed from FBI systems."

Yet on Thursday, the Trump Justice Department’s Weaponization Working Group released a 231-page report showing that the FBI’s targeting of Catholics was a lot more than just the weird anti-Catholic output of a single field office. In fact, as The Daily Signal’s Tyler O’Neil writes, the new report “reveals that FBI personnel opened investigations into two Catholic priests, conducted surveillance tied to the Richmond Catholic Memo, and continued revising the memo after headquarters ordered it deleted.”

Apparently, the Richmond office investigated one priest, and it researched the flight and credit card details of another priest. The investigation wasn't contained within the Richmond office, either. The bureau's Boston field office conducted surveillance of the priest at the airport, and Customs and Border Protection interviewed him twice, and searched his phone.

And what did the bureau find after violating theses priests' civil rights? Nothing. No “identified threat to national security” and no “allegation of federal violation.”

Furthermore, according to the report itself: “The FBI relied on biased and unverified materials, including [— wait for it! —] Southern Poverty Law Center publications and foreign intelligence materials, without assessing their credibility. Internal reviews later concluded that the product improperly conflated religious doctrine with violent extremism and ignored First Amendment concerns.”

So not only was the Richmond document rotten from the get-go, it was also pushed by a corrupt organization that not only has Klan members on its payroll, but whose staffers also sleep with Klan members.

“This Department of Justice,” said Attorney General Todd Blanche, “will not tolerate a weaponized bureaucracy that chills First Amendment activity. The individuals who developed the Richmond Domain Perspective are no longer with the Department, and our Working Group’s efforts to investigate weaponization under the previous Administration will continue.”

Added Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward: “The weaponization of our Government undermines our Democracy and reduces the People’s trust in our Nation’s institutions that are designed to serve and protect them. The Richmond Memo was a clear abuse of power, targeting conservative and religious beliefs disfavored by agents of Government who lacked necessary oversight. No more. Under Attorney General Blanche’s leadership this Department will have zero tolerance for weaponization.”

This sort of weaponization most certainly does undermine our trust in government. But you know what else does? A lack of accountability. Which is why I continue to think Chris Wray would look simply smashing in a neatly tailored orange jumpsuit.
