In many ways, the Trump administration is being plagued by its success. We don’t tend to notice a closed border, for example, or historically low murder rates, or a federal government that has been shrunk to its smallest size in half a century.
Nor do we tend to notice when the FBI is no longer snooping on the “radical-traditionalist Catholics” among us, nor when the Department of Justice stops looking for “domestic terrorists” disguised as concerned parents at school board meetings.
All this has happened, though, since Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans put the adults back in charge of our federal government. And yet the Democrat Party — the party that brought us all the above-mentioned misery — is the heavy favorite to retake Congress when the American people head to the polls in exactly four weeks. Indeed, Polymarket has them with a 65% chance to retake the Senate and a 93% chance to retake the House.
Is this an ungrateful country or what?
Yesterday, though, we got yet another reminder of why Democrats must be kept as far away from the levers of power as possible — because as soon as they have it, they start abusing it. Power to Democrats is like catnip to felines: It makes them crazy.
A DOJ press release from the Trump administration’s Weaponization Working Group offers this high-level takeaway: “Records show Biden White House and Justice Department leadership pushed for a memo that sought to find a federal ‘hook’ to prosecute parents and charge protestors with federal crimes, despite widespread concerns from attorneys and agents.”
Also within the press release: “The Working Group officially acknowledges what many Americans already assumed: that as Biden Administration actions chilled the exercise of parental and free speech rights, parents who lawfully exercised their parental rights and freedom of speech were often targeted by members of the educational establishment.”
As The Daily Signal reports, “Biden Justice Department officials raised serious concerns about the DOJ treating concerned parents like domestic terrorists before Attorney General Merrick Garland released his memo directing investigations into school board protests in 2021.”
Welp, on the one hand, it’s encouraging to know that at least there were some voices of constitutional reason buried deep within the bowels of the Biden administration. But on the other hand, it’s deeply discouraging — albeit not at all surprising — that these sensible voices were drowned out by the statists and the tramplers and the oppressors.
Recall that in the early months of the Autopen administration, in September 2021, the National School Boards Association sent a snowflaky letter to the Biden White House, shrieking about unruly parents at school board meetings — parents with the temerity to question mask mandates and vaccine mandates and a curriculum that pushed such abominations as critical race theory and transgender ideology — and petitioned for urgent federal action against these alleged encroachments on their authority.
Most infamously, the NSBA letter called these expressions of parental rights “the equivalent of a form of domestic terrorism.” So, concerned parents at school board meetings are tantamount to Timothy McVeigh. Got it.
In response, Attorney General and erstwhile Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland issued a letter of his own. “Threats against public servants are not only illegal, they run counter to our nation’s core values,” wrote Garland. “Those who dedicate their time and energy to ensuring that our children receive a proper education in a safe environment deserve to be able to do their work without fear for their safety.”
Within that infamous memorandum, Garland even encouraged the use of an FBI snitch line against noisy or unruly parents.
“Among the most egregious findings,” according to the DOJ press release, “exhibits show that individuals in the Biden White House and Attorney General Garland’s advisors wanted to involve federal law enforcement and prosecutors in matters involving parents and school boards.”
That’s right. The Biden administration wanted to get involved despite the concerns that had been raised from within. “Further,” the press release continues, “the Memo established a task force to find federal enforcement options for investigating and prosecuting parents and the FBI opened 25 ‘Guardian assessments’ on parents. One FBI whistleblower disclosed that a mother was investigated because she ‘is a gun owner’ and belonged to a ‘right-wing mom’s group.’” Good gravy.
When the Biden White House floated a draft version of Garland’s memo to DOJ attorneys, one brave outlier responded that they “might as well rename the damn thing the Anti-MAGA Task Force.”
Elections, though, have consequences. On January 20, 2025, his very first day in office, President Trump signed an executive order eliminating the political weaponization of federal agencies.
This sad affair is entirely indicative of the loyalties of today’s Democrat Party. There was a time when they stood up for freedom, for the little man, for the everyday American, and they stood against the huge and powerful institutional forces arrayed against him. That time is long gone. These days, the Democrats are the institutional elitists, and they align themselves with the Bigs — with Big Justice, with Big Education, with Big Labor, with Big Government, and on and on.
One wonders: Will the American people take notice within four weeks?
