As Americans head to the polls soon, frustration over certain economic concerns — namely inflation and the current high prices at the pumps — has Democrats predicting a blue wave.
And based on recent polling numbers, they appear to have genuine reason for optimism. However, much of the reason for the state of the economy can be tied directly to Biden-era policies, and the Democrats’ massive government spending programs like the dubiously named “Inflation Reduction Act.” Joe Biden grew government massively, and that hurt the economy.
Furthermore, what actual “fixes” are the Democrats offering? Higher taxes and even more government handouts. And of course, the promise of targeting President Donald Trump for impeachment… again. (Apparently, they’re hoping the third time’s the charm.)
So, given the state of this election cycle, it’s worth looking at some of the genuinely significant accomplishments Trump has overseen during his second stint in the White House.
A big one to highlight was the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. As is so often the case with politics, there were big promises that didn’t quite materialize — in this case, cutting government spending by $2 trillion.
DOGE didn’t fully lived up to Musk’s vision, but that doesn’t mean it failed either. It cut government waste and, more importantly, helped trim the bloated federal workforce.
Thanks to Trump’s leadership and DOGE, the federal workforce is at its lowest level in 60 years. The current federal workforce now numbers 2.7 million employees. That total does not include active-duty military, whose numbers have increased under Trump to roughly 1.5 million, or the nation’s intelligence agencies, which number about 100,000.
To put things in perspective, back in 2010 the federal workforce temporarily hit 3.4 million, and in 2020 it numbered 3.2 million. Part of the swell in government employees in those years was due to hiring for the census. However, in January 2025, as Trump was taking office, the federal workforce had swollen to its largest non-census high in 30 years.
Yet by September 2025, that federal workforce had dropped by 150,000 employees. That represents the biggest single decrease in the yearly total of federal employees in almost 80 years. Today, the federal workforce has decreased by an additional 150,000 workers.
Agencies that the Trump administration has deservedly gutted include the Department of Education, which he would love to eliminate entirely, but doing so would require an act of Congress. The good news is that DOE’s workforce is down significantly, and America’s schools are better for it.
The State Department also cut 37% of its workforce, and the War Department has reduced its civilian workforce by 61,000 employees. Of note, the State Department eliminated USAID, an agency that primarily existed to funnel U.S. taxpayer dollars in support of radical leftist ideology overseas. Interestingly, since the death of USAID, every presidential election in South America has been won by the conservative candidate. There have been seven elections, and Brazil is currently in a runoff, with the conservative candidate holding the edge in total votes.
Senator Elizabeth Warren’s arguably unconstitutional Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has also been trimmed in size by 88%. Trump would eliminate that agency as well if he had the power to do so.
Furthermore, despite this significant decrease in federal employees, Americans have not noticed any decrease in government services. Clearly, the federal workforce had a lot of bloat, which, to be honest, everyone already knew. Government jobs earned a reputation as cushy career positions, with almost no fear of ever being fired.
Remember this when you go to the polls in November. Trump has been draining the swamp, and that draining needs continual support. If the Democrats retake Congress, they will go out of their way to refill the swamp. After all, a whopping 84% of all federal employee donations went to Kamala Harris in 2024.
