Welp, that didn’t take long.
If you were watching the calamitous results of Tuesday night’s election results in real time, you no doubt noticed this two-word ALL CAPS warning from a triumphant Robert Garcia: “LAWYER UP.”
The Republican Party was still a warm-blooded body at the time — prostrate on the floor, yes, but not yet having achieved cadaver status — and yet the California congressman couldn’t contain himself. Nor could he keep from letting the mask slip to reveal the Democrats’ real plans come January 3: LAWYER UP.
Here, though, it’s instructive to revisit what Garcia posted back before he and his fellow Democrats were given the gavels by the American electorate: “Donald Trump is the single biggest threat to our democracy and the rule of law. He continues to attack judges and [wait for it!] has promised to weaponize the justice department against his opponents if he is re-elected.”
Not surprisingly, it appears that Garcia has since deleted that revealing post. Thankfully, though, the Internet is forever, so we can confidently establish that Garcia is both a hypocrite and a coward. (Memo to Bob: Back in early August, I made an electoral prediction that turned out to be really idiotic, but you don’t see me scurrying back to cover my tracks by deleting what I wrote.)
To be fair, though, it wasn’t just Garcia. As Brianna Lyman noted at The Federalist, leftists from across the board were echoing the same sentiment.
Oregon Senator Ron Wyden said it succinctly: “Subpoenas.” Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, though, was more loquacious: “[Big Tech executives] are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing.”
And then there was that foul-mouthed spit-swapping bestie of Michigan Senator-elect (man, does it ever hurt to type that) Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, Hasan Piker, who lashed out with orgasmic glee: “WE’RE GONNA PUT YOU’RE A** IN JAIL EVERYONE GET MORE WOKE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Alas, to the victor go the spoils. And the victors, in this case, are spoiling for some lawfare.
Oh, soon-to-be Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and the rest of the Democrats’ leadership will talk a good game about prices and affordability and the needs of the American people. “With this majority,” Schumer said yesterday, “Americans have given we Democrats the opportunity to prove ourselves worthy of their trust. And that’s the most important job — even much more important than winning, winning the election — is doing things, is saying, ‘Not only have we listened to you … but we’re gonna do things to make your lives better.’”
Exit polling showed the economy to be the foremost issue on the minds of voters — foremost, that is, behind a desire to express their opposition to Donald Trump — but it’s hard to imagine how the Democrats are going to do a better job with the American economy than Trump is doing. Frankly, I think our nation would be a lot better off if Schumer and his fellow Democrats just stood there instead of doing something.
Regardless, don’t be fooled: The Democrats’ red brigades are hankering for some red Republican meat, and they’re going to get it.
As for what that red meat might look like, constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley has some ideas:
On impeachments, [War Secretary] Pete Hegseth will likely be the initial target. I am told that there were working groups on the Hill on the expected agenda after taking power. Hegseth appears to be the favorite for impeachment. I am told there is some division on seeking a third impeachment of Trump, though the base is unlikely to be satisfied without such an effort. Chuck Schumer does not appear as eager to take on such a trial but does support “corruption investigations.”
The Democrats ran on fighting corruption and will now work to prove the point. They will have to fulfill the narrative and parade a line of targets before these Committees. Pundits like Jennifer Welch have even demanded calling in Barron and Tiffany Trump in this cathartic crackdown.
So there you have it. The Democrats were told by the American people to focus on improving the economy and bringing prices down, and beginning on January 3, we’re going to get a sense of whether that message went in one ear and out the other.
Color me skeptical. As Professor Turley concluded, “Little grows on scorched earth.”
