Heartbeat Bills Are Not Mistakes
Thoughts on abortion, Donald Trump, Republicans, and conservative voters.
Protecting the lives of the unborn has once more become a topic of discussion in conservative spheres. This time the discussion has been prompted by former President Donald Trump’s response to a question about abortion.
In a clip from his interview with “Meet the Press,” Trump stated that both Democrats and Republicans will like him for brokering a compromise on an acceptable number of weeks where an abortion would be permissible. He went on to say the six-week heartbeat bill signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was a “terrible mistake.”
Naturally, this welcomed heavy criticism from the pro-life movement.
Pro-life influencers called out the former president for his statement, and the controversy gave other presidential candidates an opportunity to weigh in. Among those presidential candidates were DeSantis and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott. “Being tough is just not enough,” Scott said. “Being angry doesn’t work, and frankly today, those pro-life folks that we really want to stand with us, we’re not standing by.”
“Donald Trump may think it’s terrible,” DeSantis fired back, “but I think protecting babies with heartbeats is noble and just, and I’m proud to have signed the heartbeat bill in Florida.”
Defending babies form abortion is indeed a noble and just cause. Some pro-life advocates are even willing to go to prison to defend unborn lives. In Washington, DC, five pro-life activists face 11 years in federal prison for blocking an entrance to an abortion clinic.
To pro-life activists, it is shocking that some would talk so loosely about abortion, especially when it comes to political gain. Perhaps this is because our country’s culture has become desensitized to the realities of abortion. Most don’t know that the procedure is a violent one that can leave a woman with lifelong medical complications and heartache.
Most are also not aware that the abortion industry is a lucrative one with few regulations. Thankfully, many states have passed laws that heavily restrict the barbaric practice of abortion. Among those states are Tennessee, Florida, and Texas.
While our country does need new leadership, it should never be at the expense of those who cannot defend themselves. It is important to note that the Left does not waver on abortion. Leftists will not accept anything less than unrestricted access to abortion. Why can’t conservatives be firm in their stance?
When science and morality are on the side of life, it should be simple to stand with life. Defending life should have never become a political battle. We cannot and must not use the lives of unborn babies for political gain.
