Ukraine stuns Russia with drone blitz, Schumer confronted with anti-Semitic protests, East Palestine cover-up, viewers bid adieu to Tapper, and more.
Trump’s steel tariffs: At a rally in Pittsburgh over the weekend celebrating the $14 billion partnership deal between Japanese-owned Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel, Donald Trump told the crowd of steel workers, “U.S. Steel will continue to be controlled by the U.S.A.” Trump also announced that he would be raising tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum to 50% on June 4. Trump’s current tariff on steel and aluminum imports is 25%. With global steel prices dropping, Trump is effectively forcing businesses to purchase domestic steel, which could increase the cost for everything from construction to automobiles. Furthermore, Trump’s new steel tariffs are likely to be met with reciprocal tariffs from U.S. trade partners, which will impact the cost of other goods beyond steel and aluminum. On the positive side, these tariffs are likely to benefit the American steel industry.
Ukraine strikes Russia with drones, destroys 40 warplanes: On Sunday, Ukraine stunned Russia with a surprise drone blitz attack. Dubbed “Operation Spider’s Web,” Ukraine engaged in a series of coordinated drone attacks that struck deep into Russia, targeting five military airfields. The small FPV drones destroyed more than 40 Russian warplanes, including a number of its strategic bombers, inflicting an estimated $7 billion in damage. The drones were snuck into Russia in a long-planned operation. The White House confirmed that the Pentagon had not been informed of the attack in advance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the operation as “an absolutely brilliant result,” which was “achieved solely by Ukraine.” Unsurprisingly, Moscow is calling the attack an act of “terrorism.”
Schumer confronted with anti-Semitic protests: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is writing a book called Antisemitism in America. The irony is palpable that one of the Democrat leaders who ushered in the era of Jew-hatred on the Left is now complaining about what he created. Then again, if Jake Tapper can write a book about the Joe Biden cover-up, nothing is beyond these people. Schumer gave a talk about his new book at the New York Public Library on Thursday, which was interrupted by anti-Semitic protestors seven times. One protester screamed about a holocaust going on in Gaza, apparently having forgotten the word “genocide.” By the time the seventh protester interrupted Schumer, the increasingly thin crowd was ready with phones in hand to capture the real entertainment. We’d commiserate with Schumer, but this couldn’t happen to a more deserving person.
Iran nuke negotiations continue: After several rounds of talks, the U.S. has sent Iran a nuclear deal proposal. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says it would be in Iran’s best interests to accept the deal as “Iran can never obtain a nuclear bomb.” Reading between the lines, the Iranians are never going to take a deal that keeps them from obtaining a bomb. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported recently that Iran has 400kg of 60% enriched Uranium, well above the standard needed for energy production and not far from the 90% required to make a bomb. It’s enough material for 10 nuclear bombs. Trump’s maximum pressure campaign brought the Iranians to the table, but evidence shows they’re playing for time — they aren’t slowing uranium enrichment at all, says the IAEA. Iran is actively meeting with China and Russia to coordinate its position with the U.S.
Jerry Nadler aide detained: Federal officers briefly detained a staffer in Rep. Jerry Nadler’s New York City office last week over concerns that his staff was “harboring rioters.” Video of the incident showed Federal Protective Service officers attempting to enter Nadler’s office but being initially blocked by staff. “We have the right to check,” an officer told the staff. “You are harboring rioters in the office.” According to DHS, the officers were eventually able to conduct their security check. There was an individual who was “verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office,” DHS explained. “The officers then detained the individual in the hallway for the purpose of completing the security check.” Nadler blamed Donald Trump for the incident, calling on him to “halt the use of these dangerous tactics and to abandon use of the expedited removal process.”
Biden’s East Palestine cover-up? In February 2023, a Norfolk Southern train carrying hazardous material infamously wrecked near the small town of East Palestine, Ohio. In an effort to prevent an explosion of highly flammable vinyl chloride, officials conducted a “controlled release” burn of the cancer-causing material, which spread a cloud of toxins across the town and the surrounding region. At the time, the Biden administration downplayed any risk to residents. Newly released emails now suggest the Biden administration knew the toxins posed serious long-term health risks but chose to cover it up. According to Government Accountability Project investigator Lesley Pacey, “FEMA knew health care was the No. 1 issue” and “that there would be the potential for cancer clusters.”
Washington Post baffled by lower fentanyl seizures: Mary Beth Sheridan, writing for The Washington Post, is confused: If Donald Trump thinks the wide-open southern border was causing massive amounts of fentanyl to flow into the U.S., then why is less fentanyl being seized now that the border has been secured? Every month in 2024, under Joe Biden’s open border, roughly 1,700 lbs of fentanyl were being seized on average. Now, the average is only 746 lbs under Trump’s renewed focus on the border. What could explain this? The article explores every possible reason for the decline in fentanyl — is it getting harder to produce, or are there supply shortages? Could it be a war within the Sinaloa cartel? Maybe demand is dropping? If you’re a Patriot Post reader, or have two brain cells to rub together, you know that closing the border means less fentanyl crossing the border in the first place.
Viewers bid adieu to Tapper: Jake Tapper is desperate for attention, even writing a book about
his ownthe White House’s cover-up of Biden’s mental decline. It’s not working. “The Lead with Jake Tapper” received abysmal ratings over the last month — only 525,000 viewers on average, a 25% decline from last year. Fox News and even MSNBC trounced Tapper with 3.3 million and over one million viewers, respectively, in similar time slots. August 2015 was the last time Tapper received ratings this bad. The core audience that advertisers are interested in is adults 25-54, but just 95,000 of his viewers fall into that group. CNN defended Tapper in a statement: “No single metric can capture the true reach and impact of a program driving the national conversation.” Keep telling yourself that, CNN.
