Tuesday: Below the Fold

Trump sends Marine battalion to Los Angeles, teachers union presidents defend illegal aliens, another Chinese scientist arrested, and more.

  • Marines to LA: To protect federal property from violent rioters, Donald Trump sent a battalion of 500 U.S. Marines into Los Angeles. Unlike the 2,000 National Guardsmen that Trump sent over the weekend to assist local law enforcement, these Marines will focus on protecting federal property and personnel. It has “been a very bad situation” in LA, Trump observed on Monday. “It was heading in the wrong direction. It’s now heading in the right direction.” Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom decried Trump’s actions, but he also downplayed the president’s order as simply “moving Marines from one base to another base,” calling it a “completely unwarranted, uncalled for, and unprecedented mobilization” and an attempt to “manufacture a crisis.” Apparently, Newsom’s MO is to let LA burn whenever possible. However, the vast majority of Americans disapprove of this violent protesting and rioting.

  • Trump vs. Newsom: “We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved.” That’s how Governor Newsom sees it. For him, the fact that Los Angeles County is believed to have a population of as many as one million illegals is no problem. On Monday, Trump said that if he were border czar Tom Homan, he would arrest Newsom, prompting the governor to cry foul. Perhaps someone should tell Newsom and the Democrats that they crossed that particular Rubicon when they tried to imprison their leading political opponent in the 2024 election. Perhaps Newsom should return to governing instead of posting on X. One memorable moment on X came when actor James Woods posted a video of a burning police car that Newsom was quick to point out was set ablaze five years ago, not during the current round of rioting. Newsom was also governor in 2020. Oops.

  • Both teachers union presidents showed up at the protests: Randi Weingarten and Becky Pringle, leaders of the two largest teachers unions in America, both showed up at the LA protests to fight for illegals to remain in the U.S. Americans might be under the quaint impression that a teachers union leader has no place at a pro-border-invasion protest. Yet Weingarten and Pringle showed up in defense of illegals in LA because they are activists, and importing criminals is exactly the activity they support. “Enough of the ICE raids,” said Pringle. Less than 200,000 of the 10,000,000 illegals that entered the U.S. under Biden have been deported, but our teachers union leadership says enough is enough!

  • Adios to foreign-born laborers: Since March, more than one million foreign-born workers have left the U.S. labor market. The vast majority of these foreign-born workers were illegal aliens. During the last year of the Biden administration, nearly all of the new jobs happened to go to foreign-born individuals. These hirings were juicing the jobs numbers, but were they actually benefiting Americans? What these foreign-born workers are doing is self-deporting. Since they didn’t have legal status to live and work in the U.S., many have apparently heeded the Trump administration’s warning to voluntarily leave the country if they want a chance in the future to legally enter, reside, and immigrate. This is a good thing. Follow the law, and you won’t need to fear law enforcement.

  • Another Chinese scientist arrested smuggling in biologic material: Last week, two Chinese nationals were arrested attempting to smuggle a dangerous fungus into the U.S. On Monday, another Chinese national was arrested for a similar action. The FBI arrested Chengxuan Han, a Ph.D. student from Wuhan, China, at Detroit Metropolitan Airport as she was attempting to smuggle in four packages of biological material related to roundworms. These packages were addressed to individuals working in the lab at the University of Michigan. It’s unclear whether these two smuggling incidents are connected. According to reports, the biological material Han was transporting does not appear to be dangerous; however, Han has a history of being denied a travel visa to the U.S. on two different occasions. In one instance, she “could not clearly answer basic questions about herself or her research.” And yeah, she’s from that Wuhan.

  • House anti-Semitism resolution divides Democrats: The House of Representatives voted 280-113 to condemn the anti-Semitic attack in Boulder, Colorado, and thank ICE for “protecting the homeland.” Seventy-five Democrats supported the resolution, while 113 opposed it. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries derided the legislation and directed his ire at Rep. Gabe Evans, who introduced it. Jeffries said, “He’s a complete and total embarrassment” who is “not even pretending to be moderate.” According to Jeffries, it seems, opposing an anti-Semite throwing Molotov cocktails at a peaceful march for Hamas hostages is not a moderate position. That’s almost a campaign ad by itself: “If you oppose terrorist attacks on peaceful marches, you are right-wing.”

  • Trump touts $1K investment for all newborn Americans: Calling them “Trump Accounts,” on Monday, Donald Trump touted his proposal to create individual investment accounts for every newborn American upon their birth. Within the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which congressional Republicans have been wrangling over, is the creation of a $1,000 government investment per newborn into an index fund account within the stock market, controlled by the child’s guardians. Contributions of up to $5,000 per year can be made to the account, with the child first able to access the fund at age 18. “Extensive research shows that children with savings accounts are more likely to graduate high school and college, buy a home, start a business, and are less likely to be incarcerated,” Trump explained. “Trump Accounts will contribute to the lifelong success of millions of newborn babies.” Brad Gerstner, CEO of Altimeter Capital/Invest America, observed, “With just $750 of additional savings per year from family, employers, church or philanthropy, these accounts are worth $50,000 by age 18.”

  • Alaska tribal leaders welcome Trump lifting Biden’s oil development ban: Paternalism has long been an issue for Democrats, but it wasn’t left behind in the days of FDR or LBJ. Joe Biden practiced it as well. Biden’s 2024 ban on oil drilling across the National Petroleum Reserve for Alaska (NPRA) “was not supported by a single entity in our region,” says Rex Rock, president of the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation. North Slope Borough Mayor Josiah Patkotak says that after a meeting with Biden’s interior secretary, where public comment supported drilling, the secretary flew out and announced an anti-drilling rule. Charles Lampe of the Kaktovik Inupiat Corporation says Trump is the one protecting their ancestral homelands from theft by environmental groups.
