“Maryland Man” must be released, NYC’s alarming primary is tomorrow, Trump admin funds $10M study on East Palestine train derailment, church mass shooting thwarted, and more.
- Operation Midnight Hammer: Eleven days ago, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion. In order to further incapacitate Iran’s imminent construction of nuclear weapons, President Donald Trump over the weekend authorized Operation Midnight Hammer to provide weapons that Israel did not have. Midnight Hammer was a massive operation that retained the element of surprise despite involving more than 125 U.S. military aircraft. It was the largest B-2 operational strike ever, and the second-largest mission since the 9/11 Islamist attack on our nation. It concluded with seven B-2s unleashing 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs) on Iran’s underground Fordow and Natanz sites — the first time this weapon has been used. MOPs can penetrate about 60 meters below ground through hardened structures before detonating, and can be dropped in sequence, effectively drilling 40-60 meters deeper with each successive blast. Apparently, the MOPs functioned as expected.
“Maryland Man” must be released, says judge: Some U.S. judges have more compassion for illegal gangsters than Americans. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes has ruled that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the infamous “Maryland Man,” cannot be held in detention pending his trial for human trafficking. Reminder: Garcia is a wife-beating, human-trafficking, MS-13 gang member who was deported to his home country of El Salvador, where the gang that threatened his life had been eradicated months after his 2019 stay of deportation. Much political capital was brought to bear to achieve Garcia’s return to the U.S. Now, Judge Holmes has declared that the government did not meet its burden of proof that Garcia was a danger to the community or a flight risk and must be released until his trial. Holmes will hold a separate hearing to determine the conditions of Garcia’s release.
New York City’s mayoral primary: The Democrat primary race for New York City mayor has become rather alarming, given the position taken by some of the candidates. The election is tomorrow, and the race appears to have come down to a contest between two candidates, both of whom should be disqualified from consideration. Zohran Mamdani is a 33-year-old radical leftist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America who, among a litany of bad policy ideas, wants to enact universal healthcare, rent controls, and replace police with “social workers.” Mamdani is also a Muslim who doesn’t believe that Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish state. The leading candidate is disgraced former governor Andrew Cuomo, who quit under threat of impeachment related to his cover-up of COVID deaths at nursing homes and sexual harassment allegations.
Judge blocks Trump from halting Harvard’s international students: In his ongoing efforts to bring Harvard University to heel over its blatant embrace of racist policies, Donald Trump keeps getting checked by judges. U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs has issued a temporary restraining order against the federal government to keep it from blocking Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program. Burroughs ordered the restoration of “every visa holder and applicant to the position that individual would have been absent such Revocation Notice.” Surprisingly, Trump’s response to this setback was to post a message on Truth Social wherein he praised Harvard for “working closely” with him on a “Deal.” His message added, “If a Settlement is made on the basis that is currently being discussed, it will be ‘mindbogglingly’ HISTORIC, and very good for our Country.”
Union-busting heading to SCOTUS? The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia on Friday put a hold on a ruling by a federal judge that Donald Trump’s March 27 executive order stripping collective bargaining rights from employees at the State Department’s USAID was illegal. Trump claimed that his authority was based on national security grounds. The circuit court observed, “When a statutory delegation invokes the president’s discretion in exercising core Article II responsibilities, there is little for a court to review.” Thus, Trump’s order remains in place. The union representing these federal employees, the American Foreign Service Association, vowed to continue fighting against Trump’s order, claiming that his intention was to attack federal unions and not national security concerns. Thus, this issue may soon be headed to the Supreme Court.
Trump admin funds $10M health effects study on East Palestine train derailment: When JD Vance was a senator from Ohio, he advanced a study on the environmental/health effects of the chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio. The Biden administration brushed it off. Now, as vice president, Vance is getting it done. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya have launched a five-year, $10 million study on the health impacts of the chemical spill caused by the train derailment. The proposal deadline is July 21, with research expected to begin this fall. Norfolk Southern settled a class-action lawsuit brought on behalf of East Palestine in April of 2024 for $600 million.
Senate drops HSA expansion from OBBBA: While much in the Senate’s version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is arguably better than the House’s version, one issue is glaringly not — a provision for health savings accounts (HSAs). The House bill expands HSAs, which are tax-free savings accounts for health-related expenses, but the Senate has avoided any expansion in its version. That would be a mistake and a missed opportunity to grow a meaningful and proven beneficial healthcare expense reform. Opening up the opportunity for more Americans to qualify for and take advantage of HSAs would help people better pay for health-related expenses. HSAs amount to a health expense tax break for working-class Americans.
FDA stops Biden-era program that sent Americans’ DNA to China: In Biden’s America, American DNA and living cells were being shipped to “FDA-regulated” clinical trials in China and other foreign states for “genetic engineering and subsequent infusion back into U.S. patients.” Trump’s Food and Drug Administration has immediately begun a review of these trials and has moved to halt the program based on the lack of informed consent. In other words, not only was American DNA being sent overseas to be manipulated before being infused back into the patient, but the patient had no knowledge that this was happening. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary said this raises questions about the integrity of U.S. biomedical research. (That’s an understatement.) Chinese medical research is known to have few ethical guidelines as well as a stated dual-use civilian-military research apparatus.
Church mass shooting thwarted by security guard: A potential mass shooting at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan, was prevented Sunday by a wary congregation and security guards. The assailant, a 31-year-old white male from Romulus, Michigan, was on his way into the church wearing tactical gear while carrying a long gun and handgun when several church staff members approached him. The attacker shot at the truck of a congregant who was attempting to run down the suspect. The shooter hit one church member in the leg and was fatally shot by two unidentified staff members. The police determined that one of the church security guards had shot and killed the attacker when they arrived on the scene. This potential tragedy was averted because CrossPointe Church knows the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
