Gen Z is coming back to reality. In a recent report compiled by UK-based professor Eric Kaufmann and his Centre for Heterodox Social Science, the numbers show a sharp decline in transgender and nonbinary identification since 2023. The percentage of trans- and queer-identifying individuals has fallen from 7% to 4%, and many students switched back to heterosexuality.

Kaufmann collected data from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI), an annual student survey from Andover Phillips Academy (a private elite prep school), and a biannual poll from Brown University’s Brown Daily Herald. The drop is undeniable.

This tells us several things.

First, the theory of social contagion — i.e., transgenderism/queer identity being “trendy” — was spot on. Two years ago, I wrote a piece describing the explosive trend happening in the opposite direction. Gallup had reported that a whopping 20% of Gen Z identified as LGBTQ+. Political pundit Bill Maher, an old-school liberal, even hilariously predicted in May 2022 that we’d either all be gay by 2054 or that this was a fleeting trend.

Interestingly enough, only a few months later, a study out of Duke University indicated that the Gallup numbers might be wrong because kids were changing their identity back to straight at high rates. Even at the time, doctors and researchers were aware that 70% of transgender-identifying kids would outgrow their dysphoria once they reached maturity. In other words, it was a premature celebration on the part of the transnormalcy activists.

Second, this is a major victory in keeping men out of women’s sports. If “transgender” identity is transitory, which it obviously is in most cases, then forcing entire women’s teams to bend over backward to accommodate one mentally confused male is incompetent and harmful to everyone involved. The vocal outcry headed by former athletes like Riley Gaines undoubtedly convinced some Gen Zers that their gender confusion infringes upon women’s rights.

Third, transgenderism is getting an increasingly bad reputation. The rising number of trans-associated crimes (e.g., the Covenant School shooting and the Charlie Kirk assassination) proves why trans- or queer-identifying individuals should not be permitted in the opposite sex’s bathrooms or locker rooms.

Fourth, Gen Z is shaping up to be a very conservative generation, which is a surprise. Whereas many believed Gen Z would be the most pro-LGBTQ/most inept generation yet, it is decidedly not. Gen Zers are more resilient than we give them credit for, and young men are leading the way.

Fifth and finally, Professor Kaufmann discovered that the downward trend in misidentifying yourself corresponded with a decline in anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems — and people who are mentally healthier are more likely not to deny reality. Shocking, I know. It’s almost like we’ve been saying that for years.

Some final thoughts: Like other harmful trends in the past, transgenderism wrecks countless lives. Many children and young adults cut off family who don’t affirm them. They also allow their bodies to be experimented on, infused with harmful hormones and puberty blockers, and sometimes left permanently damaged. The fact that these practices are allowed to continue despite the science debunking them is horrific.

On the political side, the pushback has led to a lot of good. More and more parents are being made aware of how they’ve been lied to by medical professionals and politicians. Young men and women who have detransitioned are coming forward and sharing their testimonies. Doctors, Big Pharma, and lawmakers have been utterly exposed for money-grabbing and for pushing pathological experimentation on people. The Supreme Court has even indicated that it will overturn Colorado’s law that bans mental health professionals from providing actual gender-affirming care and support for individuals who are fighting against same-sex attraction or gender identity delusions and wish to disavow them.

The authoritarian regime of the gender activists is crumbling. It is glorious to see.
