A New Ice Age?
As if we’ve entered a time warp to the 1970s, the latest instance of climate alarmism claims a new ice age could soon be upon us.
It might be time to move south or buy some heavier coats if you’re inclined to believe the latest doomsday climate change prognostication. A new ice age is coming.
According to a recent study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), better known as the Gulf Stream, is slowing down and nearing collapse.
Should this occur, the study warns, it would prevent warmer currents that moderate the climate from the U.S. East Coast to the United Kingdom and across Europe. This would, in turn, result in significantly colder temperatures across the region, initiating a new ice age and raising sea levels.
So, panic, everyone!
Now, before even looking at this latest study, it’s helpful to look at who exactly is behind this newest bit of climate alarmism.
It turns out this study was conducted by the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) and the University of California, San Diego. So, China is behind this latest climate scaremongering, which makes sense, since Beijing would love nothing more than to handicap the West’s energy production while also making bank from its EV and solar tech industries.
Indeed, while China is spreading climate change panic across the West, it’s still building coal-fired power plants, as CCP leaders are laughing all the way to the bank.
Furthermore, a look into the actual study is predictably revealing. The primary data used in it are mid-depth Atlantic Ocean water temperatures between 1,000 and 2,000 meters, near the equatorial region. The study then asserts that changes in these temperatures are directly affecting the Gulf Stream, supposedly slowing it and threatening an imminent collapse.
Of course, this prediction of what may happen is not based on actual data but on extrapolations from computer-based models. It’s the tyranny of the rarely reliable computer-based models. They are like the weather gods of antiquity, always threatening doom and gloom should sacrifices of appeasement fail to be made.
Those sacrifices take the form of relegating more of the West’s individual freedoms and finances to ever-growing government bodies that promise salvation if the citizenry grants them greater authority and power.
As author Jon Gabriel observed, “Over the years, I’ve been told the following eco-disasters would destroy earth (in order): New Ice Age, Acid Rain, Ozone Hole, Global Warming, Global Weirding, Climate Change, New Ice Age. The solution for each was to give the UN more power, end capitalism, and expand government.”
Meteorologist Chris Martz also weighed in to refute the report’s doomsday conclusion of a coming new ice age, writing: “No. No, it probably isn’t.” After explaining the nature of the Atlantic Gulf Stream and how temperatures affect it, he notes a number of studies have effectively concluded that “the AMOC has been stable in recent decades, or at the very least, more 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 than previously thought.”
The truth is, one has a better chance of seeing an eighth installment of the “Ice Age” movies hit theaters in the next few years than of any significant cooling in the North Atlantic region of the world.
