Genital Mutilation of Somali Women in Minnesota
The Somali population unquestionably performs FGM in a state where it is illegal, yet the cases aren’t being prosecuted by Democrats.
Minnesota has a population of just over 5.8 million. Of that, at least 80,000 are either of Somali descent or from Somalia itself. This particular demographic is garnering a lot of attention right now.
Somalis were involved in a plethora of welfare fraud in Minnesota, with more and more schemes coming to the surface as the federal government continues to investigate. Now, Somalis are getting attention once again for their practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), which is a felony under state law and has been since 1994.
FGM is a horrific procedure — a cultural and religious routine that’s practiced by Islamists who follow Sharia law. Without getting into too much detail, it’s a form of female circumcision performed on young girls. It gravely hurts their ability to enjoy intercourse and makes having children exponentially more dangerous and miscarriages more likely. FGM is excruciatingly painful and traumatizing.
According to the Chr. Michelsen Institute:
Islamic texts are often used to justify FGM/C in this region; this despite the fact that the majority of the world’s Muslims do not practice it. While there is clear support in the Sunna (Prophet Muhammad’s teachings and actions) for male circumcision in Islam, there is no evidence for FGM/C. The support for male circumcision in Islam has been wrongfully applied to women. There is not a single verse in the Quran that can be used as a basis for FGM/C; on the contrary there are many verses that condemn the practice. There are strong stipulations in Islam that upholds the sanctity of the human body; causing harm to the human body without any religious justification is strictly prohibited.
Physician Qanta A. Ahmed, writing for Scientific American several years ago, plainly stated: “Sanitized as ‘female circumcision,’ these procedures have no positive impacts on health. FGM/C devastates women and girls permanently.”
FGM is banned in most Western nations, including the United States. The UN, WHO, and UNICEF have all classified FGM as a human rights violation. In the U.S., the American Medical Association has classified it as child abuse. Yet Somalis in Minnesota unquestionably perform FGM on their women.
How are they able to do this when it is banned in the U.S. in general and in Minnesota in particular? They do so clandestinely and with threats and shame. Furthermore, many believe that some family members bring girls back to Somalia just to have FGM performed on them.
In 2021, one of President Donald Trump’s final first-term laws that he signed was the STOP FGM Act, which gave the federal government jurisdiction to stop this sort of activity from happening and protect these young girls.
But even with this law in place, there aren’t FGM cases being prosecuted because the girls who are being violated are exceedingly young, and there is immense social pressure not to tell anyone. On top of that, physicians aren’t reporting any victims they treat. Some are even performing the procedure on the down low, as was the case a few years ago in Michigan. Minnesota law enforcement isn’t reporting cases, yet it’s obviously happening.
Like the taxpayer fraud, this unfettered spate of human rights violations has been allowed to continue because those in authority have allowed it to. Silence from the community doesn’t help, but there seems to be complicity among those who should be enforcing the Rule of Law.
When lawmakers came together in Minnesota to try to address the horrors being inflicted on women in the Somali community, Democrat lawmakers would not support the bill because it was brought forward by a white Republican lawmaker.
This is the problem with all leftist politicians. There is always a virtue code — dictated by the hierarchy of victimhood — that bars them from pursuing justice. It’s the same with other forms of mutilation. Sex-change surgeries are not confronted because that would go against the minority’s ideological beliefs.
No one can fully and effectively help these women and girls if they refuse assistance or are actively prevented from receiving it. However, the fact that no one in authority has intervened to stop this dangerous and horrific butchery means that there is a major breakdown in law enforcement.
The Left loves to say that “silence is violence.” In this case, silence hides violence, and these poor women are being condemned to health problems and denied a healthy, enjoyable reproductive experience.
