Good Cancel Culture: Fire Jimmy Kimmel

The “comedian’s” most recent hateful joke belies free speech. But for now, it’s rules for the GOP but not for a lefty.

You are largely allowed to say whatever you want, but you are not free from the consequences. America has standards that should be enforced. Threats, violence, harassment, and incitement are all forms of speech that should be condemned entirely and prosecuted accordingly. And they were — until Democrats decided to change the rules.

Leftists can say awful things mostly without consequence. For example, Jimmy Kimmel, the late-night ABC “comedian”/Democrat pundit, takes political jabs under the guise of humor, and the clapping seals in his audience reinforce his misconception that he has an incisive wit.

After the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Kimmel deliberately mischaracterized the murderer as a “MAGA conservative” when in reality it was a leftist with a gay furry boyfriend. ABC gave Kimmel a slap on the wrist and suspended him for five days.

It was only a matter of time before the crude buffoon stepped in it again.

On Thursday, Kimmel did a sketch mocking the then-forthcoming White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and it included video of Melania and Barron Trump, who were in the “audience” at his faux dinner. Kimmel said, “Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania — so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”

Two days later, at the real White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a shooter attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump.

Melania responded to this vile joke on her X account. “Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country,” she said. “His monologue about my family isn’t comedy — his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America. People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community[?]”

Kimmel’s response was less than apologetic. He explained that his joke was ostensibly about the Trumps’ age difference and her being a gold digger, rather than her husband being a target for leftists who are being fed a steady diet of rhetoric just like Kimmel’s.

“It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80, and she’s younger than I am,” Kimmel asserted. “It was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination. And they know that. I’ve been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence, in particular.” Yes, he and the rest of Hollywood do regularly exercise gross hypocrisy on that subject.

He added, “I understand that the first lady had a stressful experience over the weekend — and probably every weekend is pretty stressful in that house. And also, I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject. I do. And I think a great place to start to dial that back would be to have a conversation with your husband about it.”

Kimmel’s own explanation undermines his defense. His reference to Melania’s stressful weekend, regarding her fear for her husband’s life, means he absolutely understands what he was doing.

Jimmy Kimmel should be fired; he’s a liability. However, ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Company, and neither is known for being impartial when it comes to politics. Lucasfilm, which is also owned by Disney, fired Gina Carano for promoting a post encouraging people to stop hating their neighbors for their political views, or else we risk repeating history à la Nazi Germany. Conservative comic Tim Allen was unceremoniously dumped by ABC for the sin of being conservative. A short time later, ABC canceled the reboot of Roseanne Barr’s eponymous sitcom after she tweeted what was interpreted as a racist joke. It’s more likely that her real offense was supporting Donald Trump.

Even with all that history of ABC punishing comedians for supposedly offensive things, I’m not holding my breath on a Kimmel firing anytime soon.
