One of the most consistent trends in American politics is that the more formal education someone receives, the more likely they are to identify with the Left. Education itself is not supposed to produce a particular political outcome. A university should not function as a pipeline to one ideology any more than it should require students to adopt one religion. The purpose of higher education is to pursue truth, challenge assumptions, and expose students to competing ideas. Yet somewhere along the way, many of our institutions stopped prioritizing intellectual diversity and instead came to be dominated by a single political worldview.

For decades, the Left understood something many conservatives ignored: if you shape the institutions, you shape the culture.

Universities, legacy media, entertainment, and much of the nonprofit world became increasingly populated by people who shared similar ideological assumptions. Once those assumptions became the norm, they were no longer presented as political opinions. They were presented as facts, morality, or simply “the right side of history.”

That is how ideas that would have once been considered fringe gained mainstream acceptance. Whether it is radical gender ideology, diversity, equity, and inclusion bureaucracies, or activist approaches to race, these ideas did not become influential because the public demanded them. They became influential because the institutions promoted them. Students learned them. Journalists repeated them. Corporations adopted them. Soon enough, disagreement itself was portrayed as outside the mainstream.

The Left’s greatest political strength was winning the institutions that shape how people think before they ever cast a ballot.

Ironically, that advantage may now be slipping away.

Across the country, confidence in major institutions has declined. Trust in the media continues to fall. Americans are increasingly skeptical of universities, especially as tuition rises while graduates leave campus burdened with debt and ideological activism instead of practical skills. Parents are questioning what their children are being taught. Even many young Americans have become more skeptical of establishment institutions than previous generations.

This anti-establishment mood exists on both sides of the political spectrum. On the Left, it often manifests through socialist movements that reject traditional Democrat leadership. On the Right, it has fueled populist movements that challenge political, academic, and media elites.

While both parties are experiencing internal revolts, the consequences are not equal.

The Left has far more invested in preserving institutional authority because institutions have been its greatest source of influence. If Americans increasingly reject those institutions, the Left loses one of its most effective methods of shaping public opinion.

Conservatives, by contrast, have spent years arguing that many of these institutions have become ideologically captured. A public willing to question them creates an opportunity to rebuild them around their original purpose rather than allowing them to function as political gatekeepers.

That does not mean conservatives should seek to replace one form of ideological conformity with another. The goal should never be to make universities, newsrooms, or cultural institutions inherently conservative. It should be to restore them as places where competing viewpoints can coexist without one side controlling the conversation.

If Americans continue rejecting institutions that have become politicized, the future does not have to belong to either ideological monopoly. It can belong to institutions that once again earn the public’s trust by pursuing truth rather than political outcomes.

The Left spent decades building influence through America’s institutions. If those institutions are finally losing their grip on the public, that may prove to be the most significant political shift of this generation — not because it guarantees conservative victories, but because it offers the chance to restore institutions that belong to everyone, not just one ideology.
