Mamdani Attacks Wealth Producers

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani doxed the nation’s biggest city’s wealthy people and threatened private grocery stores with subsidized competition.

New York City’s Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani detests America’s system of government. The DSA operative is doing his utmost to undermine it, imposing a Marxist-based system that dispenses with individual rights as if they were a virus to be eradicated.

The latest examples of Mamdani’s effort to sabotage the system come via two recent moves. One is an attack against property ownership; the other undercuts market-based pricing.

Mamdani celebrated both as “progress.”

Effective July 1, New York state has imposed a new pied-à-terre tax on nonprimary residences valued at over $1 million. Mamdani’s administration released the database of all New York City homeowners who are subject to this new tax, and in doing so doxed thousands of people.

The database includes the names and home addresses of these New York property owners. As Council Minority Leader David Carr, whose home is on the list, responded, “It’s a reckless and foolish move, especially considering there are potentially thousands of properties on this list that do not qualify as second homes or whose owners will successfully dispute their inclusion.”

Last week, Mamdani was nearly gloating over the coming imposition of the new tax. “If you have a second home in New York City worth more than $5M, check your mailbox when you’re back in the five boroughs — because you’ve got mail,” he posted on social media. “Today, we sent notification letters to property owners, letting them know that our new pied-à-terre tax is coming soon. The best city in the world deserves the best parks, libraries, and schools in the world. That’s only possible when we all pay our fair share.”

Ironically, the list exposes a number of famous, wealthy supporters of Mamdani, including actress Cynthia Nixon and director Woody Allen.

Mamdani’s exposure led to legitimate fears of public safety risk for these individuals. It’s hard to believe that this wasn’t his intent; as any Marxist would, he has repeatedly demonized the city’s wealthy residents. At the very least, this list invites harassment of certain property owners.

“Nobody wants this database more than Mamdani’s band of communist social media agitators salivating to harass Americans at every turn,” podcaster John Ashbrook warned. “They attack anybody who questions his decisions, and there’s no question they’ll harass every New Yorker who provides housing for a living.”

As if threatening the wealthy wasn’t enough, Mamdani also announced the opening of new city-run grocery stores. He advertised, “Once a month, our five city-run grocery stores will set prices for this core set of goods at 30% below typical retail prices. No exceptions, no gimmicks.”

How will these discounted prices be underwritten? Well, certainly not by the consumer. Nope, these stores food banks will be subsidized by the city’s taxpayers. What could go wrong? I mean, socialized grocery stores have worked so well in Venezuela or Cuba.

Mamdani smugly asserted, “If one publicly owned grocery store that brings prices down in the neighborhood is enough to put someone out of business, then maybe they shouldn’t have been in that business in the first place.” Some of those small-business owners who might lose their livelihoods are suing Mamdani through the Multicultural Business Coalition, a group representing Asian-, African-, Caribbean-, Hispanic-, Middle Eastern-, and Jewish-owned businesses in New York.

On the one hand, Mamdani is targeting the wealthy. On the other hand, he’s harming working New Yorkers and entrepreneurs. In both tax and grocery policy, he is fueling class warfare and grievance politics. Or, in a word, envy — the foundation of Marxism.
