Back to School: Choosing Education Over Schooling

As we approach this new school year, I encourage fellow parents to consider carefully the differences between schooling and education.

As the back-to-school season approaches, many parents find themselves reflecting on the choices they have regarding their children’s schooling and education. The distinction between these two concepts — schooling versus education — holds profound significance in shaping a child’s worldview and character development.

In my journey as a parent, I have come to believe that the environment in which our children learn can greatly influence their growth. Homeschooling stands out as the best option, allowing parents to tailor education specifically to their child’s needs. Parochial schools follow closely behind as a solid alternative, while private schools present another viable option.

For my family, we chose private schooling, and I’d like to share the reasons behind this decision.

One of the primary motivations for choosing private school is the desire for my children to engage with their peers outside the home. My wife and I both possess unique gifts and talents that we wish to contribute to the marketplace, and we believe that a structured school environment is essential for our children’s social and intellectual development. Private schools provide a unique testing ground where our children can challenge their faith and ask thought-provoking questions, which is crucial for their growth. It offers a balance of exposure to diverse perspectives while allowing them to remain grounded in their values.

I also have reservations about parochial schools. While they may offer religious education, I feel they can inadvertently shift the responsibility of instilling biblical values and morals away from parents. Education should be a partnership in which parents and schools work together rather than a delegation of responsibility. In choosing private education, I aim to foster an environment in which my children are encouraged to think critically and engage with the world around them instead of merely accepting information at face value.

One aspect I appreciate most about my sons’ private school is its diversity — not only of ethnicity, but also of thought. This diversity enriches their learning experience, allowing them to encounter a variety of perspectives and beliefs. Schooling often tends to focus on rote memorization and regurgitation of facts, whereas true education involves receiving information thoughtfully, questioning it, and relating it to one’s worldview while considering others’ viewpoints.

As a parent, I have a strong desire for my boys to develop into well-rounded individuals who can walk confidently into any room in any nation and not perceive themselves as victims. I want them to embrace their identity and heritage, grounded in their faith in Christ. In doing so, they will be equipped to engage thoughtfully with various schools of thought, fostering dialogue and understanding rather than division.

As we approach this new school year, I encourage fellow parents to consider carefully the differences between schooling and education. The choices we make today will shape our children’s futures and prepare them to navigate an increasingly complex world. Whether through home, parochial, or private schooling, the ultimate goal should be to foster an environment in which our children can grow, question, and thrive.
