Texas Abortion Restrictions Struck
Convenience vs. saving lives.
Earlier this year, Texas enacted restrictions on abortion, including a ban on abortions after 20 weeks (excepting health of the mother). These regulations require doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles and label requirements for abortion-inducing drugs. District Judge Lee Yeakel ruled Monday, however, that the latter restrictions on clinics and drugs were unconstitutional. The 20-week ban stands. Republican Gov. Rick Perry pledged to continue fighting for the laws. The purpose, after all, isn’t to be convenient for abortionists – it’s to save lives.
