Abortion Rate Plummets
16.9 abortions per 1,000 women.
A new survey from the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion organization, reveals that the abortion rate in 2011 (16.9 procedures per 1,000 women) was the lowest recorded level since abortion was legalized in 1973. The rate declined 13% between 2008 and 2011 following a plateau after 2005. However, as Family Research Council president Tony Perkins points out, “it’s unclear whether the report takes into account chemical abortions, which are induced by drugs like RU-486 or ella, and have become significantly more popular since the FDA gave them the green light.” But it’s also worth noting that the study’s findings precede the numerous abortion restrictions many state legislators began passing in 2011. And finally, Perkins adds, “you don’t need a … poll to show you what the March for Life just did: Americans, especially young ones, are increasingly pro-life.”
