50 Senators Decry ‘Redskins’
Write to NFL demanding name change.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell received another letter Thursday from Congress whining about how the name of the Washington Redskins is supposedly racist. The 50 Democrat senators pointed to the NBA’s quick and decisive action against LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling after his racist comments surfaced, insisting “that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports.” Furthermore, they wrote, “Now is the time for the NFL to act. The Washington, D.C. football team is on the wrong side of history.” The NFL replied quickly, essentially telling the senators to butt out: “The intent of the team’s name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image.” Exactly. What team chooses a mascot that they hate or want to denigrate? It’s not as if the team was called the Washington Obamas.
