Was He a Collaborator?
Questions about Bergdahl.
Fox News’ James Rosen reports that Bowe Bergdahl “at one point during his captivity converted to Islam, fraternized openly with his captors and declared himself a ‘mujahid,’ or warrior for Islam.” That conversion could have been fake, and Rosen also reports the military isn’t convinced Bergdahl was a collaborator. “[R]etired U.S. Marine Corps General James N. Mattis, a 45-year service veteran who served as CENTCOM commander from August 2010 to August 2012 … was also adamant that no one at CENTCOM or within the broader U.S. military or intelligence community – despite intensive investigation of such allegations – ever learned of anything to suggest Bergdahl had evolved into an active collaborator with the Haqqani network or the Taliban.” But his fellow soldiers are convinced that a spate of Taliban attacks after Bergdahl’s disappearance are more than coincidence. And former Sergeant Evan Buetow, Bergdahl’s team leader on the night he disappeared, says they heard on local Afghan radio that “‘the American is in [a nearby village and] he’s looking for someone who speaks English so he can talk to the Taliban.’ And I heard it straight from the interpreters lips as he heard it over the radio.” Bergdahl should absolutely face court-martial to determine the facts.
