As Elections Loom, Obama Continues to Regulate

The Obama administration continues to enact regulation after regulation despite the fact the additional red tape may imperil Senate Democrats in this midterm election. Obama did not pass regulation during the months leading up to his re-election in 2012. But now that he has nothing personally to lose, he’s out to create a legacy through his phone ‘n’ pen – regardless how that affects Senate Democrats. This year, the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) is on a course to review 125 pieces of regulation. Former White House staffer in the OIRA Stuart Shapiro told The Hill, “We can’t underestimate the role politics plays in regulatory decisions. It’s important to remember that at the heart of regulations are political decisions.” Once again, Barack Obama plays a short-term game to dress the halls of his presidential library that may hurt him: He needs a Democrat Senate to accomplish his goals.
