GOP Senator Is Skeptical of Khorasan Threat
In announcing airstrikes in Syria, Barack Obama for the first time mentioned the Khorasan Group “Last night,” he said, “we also took strikes to disrupt plotting against the United States and our allies by seasoned al-Qaida operatives in Syria who are known as the Khorasan Group. And once again, it must be clear to anyone who would plot against America and try to do Americans harm that we will not tolerate safe havens for terrorists who threaten our people.” Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), however, is skeptical, wondering if the Obama administration may be crying wolf about imminent threats “particularly right before an election.” He said he’s never heard of the group until now, and will “absolutely want detailed briefings about that.” He added, “Quite frankly, lots of these statements in the past, lots of these statements with regard to prisoner swap several months ago prove not to be true.” We can’t blame him for not trusting this administration.
